BACKGROUND: The epithelioid sarcoma of the hand is often misdiagnosed. This tumor occurs most frequently in children and young adults, has an uncharacteristic course, and carries a high risk for local recurrence and metastases. The characteristic histopathology is helpful in establishing the correct diagnosis. Differential diagnosis includes synovialoma, fibromatosis and Dupuytren's contracture. Multinodular appearance is not uncommon.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Three young patients (one male and two female) were operated on the hand for treatment of Dupuytren's contracture, synovialoma and fibroma

Breast cancer, with its diverse subtypes like ER-positive, HER-2-positive, and triple-negative, presents complex challenges demanding personalized treatment approaches. The intricate interplay of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors underscores its status as a primary contributor to cancer-related fatalities in women globally. Understanding the molecular drivers specific to each subtype is crucial for developing effective therapies. In this landscape, connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), also referred to as cellular communication network factor 2 (CCN2), emerges as a significant pl

This case report concerns a 34-year-old woman who had been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), osteoarthritis (OA), lumbar disc herniation and the like in different hospitals during the past 18 months. She had progressive osteoarthrosis, significant muscle weakness, gait abnormalities in weightbearing areas, however without typical inflammatory low back pain, while the treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) was invalid, with normal inflammation index, negative results for rheumatic factor (RF) and human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B27, a

Primary hyperparathyroidism is predominantly caused by a single parathyroid adenoma. Knowledge of normal and ectopic locations of parathyroid glands is crucial to help guide surgeons who plan targeted unilateral parathyroidectomy to reduce surgical time and risk. We describe a female patient with clinical primary hyperparathyroidism who underwent a failed initial parathyroidectomy, with subsequent imaging localizing an ectopic parathyroid adenoma in the carotid sheath.

The peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a reactive gingival overgrowth occurring frequently in the anterior maxilla. It originates in the cells of the periodontal ligament and is more common in children and young adults. In the current article a case of gingival over growth, which was thought to be puberty-induced gingivitis was seen in the lower anterior maxillary gingiva. Histology of the excised tissue showed cellular, fibrous connective tissue stroma with calcified osseous calcifications indicative of POF. The definitive diagnosis is established only by histological examination, which re

Dehiscence after laparotomy is one of the major complications of laparotomy. This is a partial or complete wound with disruption and evisceratio abdominal organs and require urgent reintervention. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of neoplastic disease and systemic disease of connective tissue on the occurrence of dehiscence laparotomy. A prospective study were included 612 patients operated at the Clinic for General Surgery in Nis in the period from January 2009 to December 2010. The effect of neoplastic disease and the presence of systemic disease of connective tissue on the

The peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a common gingival growth usually arising from the interdental papilla. The anterior maxilla is the most common location of involvement. The etiology and pathogenesis of POF remains unknown. Some investigators consider it a neoplastic process, whereas others argue that it is a reactive process; in either case, the lesion is thought to arise from cells in the periodontal ligament. Trauma or local irritants, such as dental plaque, calculus, microorganisms, masticatory force, ill-fitting dentures, and poor quality restorations, have been implicated in the

The synovium, a specialized vascular tissue, lines the diarthrodial joints, bursae, and tendon sheaths of the body. It helps in nourishment of articular structures. The synovium is affected by a variety of disorders that can be either localized or systemic. Although normal synovium is barely perceptible on magnetic resonance imaging, it provides an excellent imaging modality for the evaluation of pathologic processes involving the synovium. The pathologic processes affecting the synovium include 1 of the following etiologies: inflammatory, infectious, degenerative, traumatic, or neoplastic and

CONTEXT: Tumor-induced osteomalacia is a rare condition usually caused by benign mesenchymal tumors. When the tumor can be found, patients are usually managed by wide excision of the tumor.
OBJECTIVE: We report a 51-yr-old male with clinical and biochemical evidence of tumor-induced osteomalacia caused by a mesenchymal tumor in the right iliac bone. He declined surgery and appears to have been successfully managed by computed tomography-guided percutaneous ethanol ablation and percutaneous cryoablation.
RESULTS: Our patient appears to have had an excellent clinical and biochemical response t

Though case reports and case series about oncogenic osteomalacia due to benign mesenchymal tumours and much more rarely, secondary to malignant ones exist in the literature, there has not been any series reported from a single department spanning the gamut of causes from benign to malignant. We present 3 patients who were seen at the department of endocrinology of our hospital between 2010 and 2012 with hypophosphataemia and severe skeletal complications. All of them were found to have oncogenic osteomalacia otherwise known as tumour induced osteomalacia (TIO) - a paraneoplastic syndrome chara

Chondrolipomas are rare benign mesenchymal tumors characterized by the proliferation of mature adipocytes associated with variable amounts of mature cartilaginous tissue. To our knowledge, only 11 cases of chondrolipoma affecting the oral cavity have been published in the English-language literature (PubMed database), and no cases of this condition up to 20 years of complaint duration have been reported. Thus, this article describes an interesting and atypical case of a 68-year-old woman who presented an asymptomatic slow-growing swelling on the posterior dorsal surface of the tongue. In addit

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to describe the surgical anatomy of infraureteral parametrium.
STUDY DESIGN: Findings of laparoscopic dissections during 12 type III radical hysterectomies were compared with findings obtained by bilateral pelvic dissections of 5 fresh and 5 embalmed female cadavers and to magnetic resonance imaging of 10 healthy controls.
RESULTS: Two anatomical entities of the parametrium were distinguished: (1) the lateral mesometrium corresponding to the blade containing vessels and lymph nodes of the uterus; and (2) the infraureteral parametrium extending dorsal

Tophi deposition is a well-recognized complication of chronic gout, but usually lacks obvious symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings may allow a relatively specific diagnosis to be rendered. In this study, we report an unusual case of gouty tophi presenting as an intra-articular synovial tumor of the knee, blocking the range of motion. We also describe its MRI appearance, which was compatible with the clinical suspicion. After arthroscopic excision of the "tumor," the patient was symptom free.

Availability of KIT tyrosine kinase inhibitors for specific treatment of GISTs has magnified the importance of accurate differential diagnosis of GIST from other tumors occurring in the GI tract and abdomen. The general problems in this distinction include histological mimicry of other mesenchymal tumors with GIST, occasional KIT-negativity of GIST, and KIT-positivity of non-GISTs. Up to 5% to 10% gastric GISTs and <2% of intestinal GISTs can be KIT-negative. The identification of these tumors as GISTs is based on knowledge of the spectrum of GIST morphology, and can be supported by molecular

We have frequently observed diffusely increased skull activity on bone scans of obese patients, who do not have evidence of metabolic or metastatic bone disease. Skull activity of 25 obese patients were compared to that of age and sex-matched nonobese 25 patients visually and quantitatively. The results clearly indicated that diffusely increased skull activity is significantly more common on bone scans of obese patients because of disparate attenuation of overlying soft tissues. This knowledge will help obviate the need for additional radiologic and/or laboratory tests in search of other condi

A 54-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of abnormal colonoscopic findings, including a submucosal protuberance at the appendiceal root. A biopsy showed no malignant findings. Computed tomography revealed a 20-mm cystic lesion with thick walls at the appendiceal root, suggestive of an appendiceal mucocele. Laparoscopic ileocecal resection was performed based on the preoperative diagnosis of a suspected mucinous appendiceal neoplasm. The resected specimen showed a closed appendiceal orifice surrounded by a mucus-containing submucosal tumor. Histopathologically, the appendiceal e
