CONTEXT: Lipochoristomas (lipomatous choristomas) are rare tumors of the acoustic nerve (cranial nerve VIII/vestibulocochlear nerve) within the internal acoustic canal and sometimes the cerebellopontine angle, and are histogenetically believed to be congenital malformations. Their clinically indolent behavior has recently prompted a more conservative management protocol in a quest for maximal nerve/hearing preservation. This approach contrasts sharply with that for the common internal acoustic canal/cerebellopontine angle tumors, the neuroepithelial neoplasms (acoustic schwannomas and meningio

Myofibroblastic tumors are fairly recently established soft tissue neoplasms. Although most of them appear to be benign, myofibrosarcoma of the soft tissue, seemingly their malignant counterpart, have been reported. We describe the clinicopathologic and radiologic features of four cases of myofibrosarcoma arising from the bone. All but one of the patients were women ranging in age from 60 to 71 years. Two tumors occurred in the metaphyses of distal femurs and the others arose in the iliac bones. On radiologic examination all tumors exhibited well-demarcated lytic destructive lesions without pe

Magnetic resonance has assumed a preeminent role in the imaging evaluation of the spine. Owing to its multiplanar capability and superior soft tissue contrast, magnetic resonance imaging is the procedure of choice for a host of spinal disorders including degenerative disc disease, tumor evaluation, trauma, and spinal deformities. It represents the most accurate means of distinguishing between recurrent disc herniation and epidural fibrosis, and it excels at the assessment of many postoperative abnormalities such as infection, adjacent segment disc degeneration, and arachnoiditis. Magnetic reso

The femoral neck, a critical biomechanical conduit, is susceptible to diverse pathologies requiring precise radiological diagnosis to prevent adverse outcomes. This review serves as a visual and textual reference for enhancing diagnostic confidence through pattern recognition and multimodality correlation. Imaging evaluation begins with radiography, offering an excellent osseous overview but limited sensitivity for early disease. Computed tomography (CT) provides superior bony detail for trauma and surgical planning, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most sensitive modality for mar

Perineurioma is an uncommon, mostly benign, spindle-cell tumor of peripheral nerve sheath origin with a predilection for the soft tissues. Although increasing awareness points to the sites of involvement by perineurioma possibly being as ubiquitous as those frequented by schwannian tumors, only one intracerebral example has been described to date. We report on a surgically resected perineurioma of the falx cerebri in an 86-year-old woman. Preoperative imaging showed an enhancing extraaxial mass of 6 cm × 5.7 cm × 3.7 cm. Histologically, the tumor consisted of a proliferation of spindle cells i

The distinction between undifferentiated melanoma (UM) or dedifferentiated melanoma (DM) from undifferentiated or unclassifiable sarcoma can be difficult and requires the careful correlation of clinical, pathologic, and genomic findings. In this study, we examined the utility of mutational signatures to identify patients with UM/DM with particular attention as to whether this distinction matters for treatment because the survival of patients with metastatic melanoma has dramatically improved with immunologic therapy, whereas durable responses are less frequent in sarcomas. We identified 19 cas

Doege-Potter syndrome is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by non-islet cell tumor hypoglycemia secondary to a solitary fibrous tumor. Doege-Potter syndrome always presents with recurrent fasting hypoglycemia, which can occasionally be life-threatening. The best choice of treatment for Doege-Potter syndrome and solitary fibrous tumor is complete resection. However, when it is unfeasible, local-regional treatment can be used as a palliative therapy. Herein, we report a case of a 46-year-old man with Doege-Potter syndrome that occurred secondary to the liver and pancreatic metastatic

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a neoplasm typically arising in the pleura. Yet, extrapleural cases have been described and are a common cause of diagnostic pitfalls, especially when met in unusual sites. We report the clinical and pathological features of a case of SFT arising in a rather unusual site, the urinary bladder, the seventh reported to date in the English literature and the first with long term follow-up. Differential diagnosis from other spindle cell neoplasms of the bladder can be problematic. Prognosis of this neoplasm is obscure and long-term follow-up is required for all cases

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a potentially devastating condition that can result in severe psychological and social morbidity. It is a diagnosis of exclusion, and other pathologic entities must be ruled out first. Glomus tumors are exquisitely painful benign vascular tumors that are most common in the hand and are rarely found in the lower extremity. Here, we present a case of a patient who developed a focus of severe anterior knee pain and tenderness a few months after a car accident that had been misdiagnosed as CRPS for 15 years. She coincidentally developed a sarcoma of her ips

Up to now 8 cases of malignant fibrous histiocytoma are reported in whom the tumor had developed after total hip replacement. Direct contact between tumor and prosthesis was proved in 7 cases. We report on a female patient of 74 years of age in whom a malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the gluteal region had formed 15 years after total hip replacement. Tumor was located in the old operation scar. Not only a direct effect of the foreign material, but also the scar has to be regarded as an etiological factor in pathogenesis of malignant fibrous histiocytoma in these cases.

Acquired periungual fibrokeratomas are benign fibrous tissue tumors and are considered as the topographical variant of acquired digital fibrokeratoma. They usually present as solitary tumors. In some instance, the entity may appear in multibranched fashion. The main histopathologic features consist of acanthosis, thick collagen bundles mainly oriented in a vertical axis forming a central core, and numerous proliferating fibroblasts. In this article, we present two cases of acquired multibranched periungual fibrokeratoma and depict their varying clinical features over time. Binucleation and per

Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare, benign, slow-growing neoplasm that arises from the submesothelial cells of the pleura. Usually, resection of the tumor and adjacent structures are sufficient for resolution. Nowadays, videothoracoscopy (VTC) allows adequate access for the surgical treatment of these tumors. CD34 antigen positivity is a differential feature with mesothelioma. We present our experience with 15 patients with SFTP (nine women and six men) who underwent surgical resection in the last 12 years (10 thoracotomies, one sternotomy and four VTC). Only four patients w

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare neoplasm frequently involving the pleura. Benign and malignant forms of the tumor occur, the benign variant being three to four times more common than the malignant.
CASE REPORT: We present herein a rare case of large malignant solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) originating from the peritoneum. An abdominal computed tomography scan revealed a well-defined solid tumor with mixed density. An abdominal ultrasonography (US) revealed a well-circumscribed solid tumor containing a partially cystic lesion. T1-weighted abdominal magnetic resonance imaging d

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Intraspinal solitary fibrous tumors, which are rare mesenchymal tumors, have previously been reported as case reports. We review our experience and, to our knowledge, the first small institutional series with respect to clinical presentation, diagnosis, surgical management, pathohistological analysis, progression-free survival, and long-term outcome.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: In this retrospective review, four patients (three male and one female) ranging in age from 17 to 59 years (mean, 38.5 yr) had spinal solitary fibromas located throughout the spinal canal. Three tu

We report a case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the chest wall observed in a 94-year-old woman. She noticed appetite loss and general edema a week before admission. The patient was diagnosed as having congestive heart failure due to valvular heart disease on the basis of echocardiographic findings and became symptom-free by treatment with vasodilators and diuretics. However, chest roentgenogram disclosed a extrapleural mass in the left mid-lateral chest. About 2 months after admission, she experienced left lateral chest pain for the first time. The chest CT scan revealed a 5 x 5 x 2 cm m

Plantar fibromatosis, also known as Ledderhose's disease, is a benign fibroblastic disorder of plantar aponeurosis, more specifically the medial side of the foot arch. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has an important role in the diagnosis, staging, and determining the deep extension found in advanced, aggressive forms of plantar fibromatosis, thereby guiding appropriate clinical and surgical management. This case report aims to provide radiologists and clinicians with simple guidelines for the differential diagnosis of the fibroblastic and fibrohistiocytic soft tissue tumors of the foot with

Paraneoplastic movement disorders are part of the spectrum of paraneoplastic syndromes caused by the production of onconeural antibodies such as anti-Hu by underlying tumours. These attack specific neurons depending on receptor aetiology. We report the case of a 53-year-old man who presented 8 years previously with symptoms of upper limb weakness, light headedness, dizziness and falls. His condition followed a progressive course. Two years after onset he had right-sided weakness, diplopia and generalised dystonia. Initial investigations identified a positive anti-Hu antibody, but an extensive

Lectin binding patterns in ten mouse malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH)-like sarcomas containing eosinophilic globule (EG) cells and in granular metrial gland (GMG) cells of mouse placenta were stained with nine lectins (Con A, LCA, WGA, DBA, SBA, e-PHA, PNA, RCA-I and UEA-I) by an avidin-biotin-peroxidase-complex method. EG cells stained strongly with DBA, SBA and PNA which are specific for N-acetyl-D-galactosamine and/or D-galactose. DBA and SBA bound throughout the cytoplasm including the globules; PNA reacted preferentially at the cell surface. There was no evidence that these three lect

INTRODUCTION: The atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is considered by most authorities to represent a superficial or minimally invasive variant of malignant fibrous histiocytoma that most often presents as a solitary nodule on the sun-exposed skin of the elderly. Among the rarest variants is the clear cell AFX, a lesion which raises consideration to a differential diagnosis encompassing a variety of neoplastic and non-neoplastic clear cell proliferations.
METHODS: We describe three cases of a distinctive cutaneous neoplasm arising in the sun-exposed skin of elderly patients. In all cases, formalin-

We report 27 solitary fibrous tumors of the female genital tract emphasizing nonvulvar locations, variant histology, and prognostic factors. The patients ranged from 25 to 78 years (most were over 40), and tumors occurred in the vulva (7), vagina (2), cervix (2), corpus (6), fallopian tube/paratubal soft tissue (5), and ovary (5). They ranged from 1.5 to 39 (mean=10.5) cm and were typically solid, but 4 were predominantly cystic. All had a haphazard arrangement of spindled to ovoid cells, with most demonstrating alternating cellular and hypocellular areas and prominent vessels, but 13 lacked h
