Cuticular Poroma: A Poroma Mostly Composed of Cuticular Cells (Cuticuloma).

Poromas are benign cutaneous adnexal neoplasms with differentiation toward excretory ducts of eccrine and apocrine glands. They are mainly composed of solid aggregates of small, monomorphous, round, and basophilic poroid cells, with a lower proportion of larger, squamous, eosinophilic cuticular cells, which are lining ductal structures with an eosinophilic luminal cuticle. In most cases of poromas, cuticular cells represent a small proportion of the neoplastic aggregates. We report 2 poromas mostly composed of cuticular cells, and on the basis of these findings, we have named cuticuloma to thi

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thyroid with concomitant papillary carcinoma: comparison of findings on fine-needle aspiration biopsy and histology.

We report two cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the thyroid gland coexisting with, and possibly arising in, papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). In the first case, CT-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) was performed on a paratracheal mass representing extrathyroidal invasion of a right thyroid lobe tumor. The aspirate showed papillary fronds and cells in honeycombed arrangements with fine chromatin, enlarged nuclei, nuclear grooves, and intranuclear inclusions in a background of mucus and blood; a diagnosis of PTC was rendered initially. However, examination of histologic sections of t

Expression of S100A6 protein in a broad spectrum of cutaneous tumors using tissue microarrays.

BACKGROUND: S100A6, a calcium-binding protein in the S100 family, has been observed in melanocytic nevi, neural tumors, fibrohistiocytic tumors and is overexpressed in melanoma. Previous studies reported S100A6 expression in atypical fibroxanthomas (AFX) but not in a small number of desmoplastic melanomas (DM). Limited data on S100A6 expression in cutaneous epithelial tumors exists in the literature. The goal of this study was to determine the specificity and sensitivity of S100A6 protein in a spectrum of cutaneous mesenchymal or epithelial tumors. METHODS: Tissue microarrays of cutaneous epi

Delayed reconstruction following Mohs' chemosurgery for skin cancers of the head and neck.

The case records of 52 patients with 55 cutaneous neoplasms treated by Mohs' chemosurgery and subsequently reconstructed by plastic surgeons were reviewed to determine if delay between resection and reconstruction adversely affected the outcome of reconstruction. Reconstruction was performed from 5 to 61 days after Mohs' chemosurgery for 45 basal cell carcinomas and 10 other cutaneous neoplasms. There were no complications during the interval between resection and reconstruction. Following reconstruction, minor wound complications occurred in 6% of patients; there were no major complications.

Primary follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the ureter: A case report and literature review.

Ureteral cancer is a rare type of neoplasm, with the most prevalent forms including squamous cell carcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Ureteral lymphoma is particularly uncommon, and forming a pre-operative diagnosis of the disease is often difficult. The current study describes the case of a 31-year-old man presenting with a space-occupying lesion located in the left lower ureter. Follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was diagnosed via intraoperative frozen section and post-operative pathological analysis. The affected ureteric segment was excised, and the ureter was repaire

Toombak dipping and cancer of the oral cavity in the Sudan: a case-control study.

To investigate the possible causal association between squamous-cell carcinomas of the oral cavity and use of toombak, we retrospectively compared the history of use of this substance in 375 patients with squamous-cell carcinomas of the lip, buccal cavity and floor of mouth, and 271 patients with squamous carcinomas of the tongue, palate and maxillary sinus, with 204 patients exhibiting non-squamous oral and non-oral malignant neoplasms and 2,820 individuals who had no malignancy, selected from the general population. The study revealed that the high prevalence of oral cancer in the Sudan is l

Expression of phosphorylated histone H2AX (γ-H2AX) in normal and neoplastic squamous epithelia of the uterine cervix: an immunohistochemical study with epidermal growth factor receptor.

The histone γ-H2AX is a marker of activated DNA damage and is overexpressed in different cancers and their precursor lesions, indicating a role in oncogenic transformation. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is overexpressed in many kinds of epithelial neoplasms. This study aimed to determine whether immunohistochemical expression of γ-H2AX is involved in the progression of the morphological spectrum from normal squamous cervical epithelia (NE, n=33) to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN; CIN1, n=9; CIN2/3, n=33) and cervical invasive squamous cell carcinoma (ISCC, n=33), whether γ-H

Squamous cell carcinoma implantation in gastrostomy orifice. Case report.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is used to provide enteral nutritional support for patients with obstructive oropharyngeal or esophageal neoplasms. The placement of the catheter is considered safe, with few complications. Despite this, a specific complication that is considered rare, has been increasingly described in the literature, i.e., metastasis of head and neck cancer in the gastrostomy stoma. In this report, we described a case of metastasis of squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx in the gastrostomy site, and discussed the possible etiologies and alternatives, seeking to reduce the

Initial Misidentification of Thumb Poroma by Shave Biopsy.

Poromas are benign adnexal neoplasms originating from the intraepidermal portion of sweat gland ducts. With the possibility of malignant transformation, accurate clinical diagnosis and treatment are crucial. Numerous reports of hand poroma lesions have been reported. We present an unusual case of a distal thumb poroma originally identified as a squamous cell lesion in a shave biopsy and eventually accurately identified after excisional biopsy. This report highlights the limitations of shave biopsy associated with soft tissue hand lesions and the need to consider poroma when evaluating a soft t

Nail neoplasms.

Nail neoplasms include all tumors occurring in the nail or periungual apparatus tissue. While some nail tumors can be similar to tumors located on the skin, others are unique. Both benign and malignant lesions can affect the nail apparatus. In particular, early malignant tumors like melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma can present similarly to onychomycosis or benign melanonychia and frequently missed by clinicians. Therefore, physicians should be aware of nail structures and the characteristics of nail tumors. Our review covers the normal nail structure and the most common nail tumors from be

Keratocystoma: Molecular insights and diagnostic challenges in a rare salivary gland tumor.

Keratosytoma is a rare, benign salivary gland tumor designated as a new entity by Nagao et al. in 2002. Recently, the discovery of RUNX2 gene rearrangement as a characteristic genetic alteration has established its classification as a distinct neoplasm, solidifying the inclusion of keratocystoma in the 5th edition of the WHO classification of Head and Neck Tumors. Clinically, keratocystoma occurs across a broad age range but is most prevalent among younger individuals, with no significant sex predilection. It typically presents as a slow-growing parotid mass. Histologically, the tumor is chara

The expression and diagnostic utility of p63 in the female genital tract.

p63 plays a key role in epithelial development in various organs, being expressed in myoepithelial cells and in basal cells of stratified epithelia. In the female genital tract, p63 is expressed in the basal and parabasal cells of mature cervical, vaginal and vulval squamous epithelium, and also in cervical reserve cells at the transformation zone and in immature metaplastic and atrophic cervical squamous epithelium. In this review, the diagnostic utility of p63 immunohistochemical staining in various pathologic scenarios within the female genital tract is discussed. Cervical microglandular hy

Sinonasal Adenocarcinomas: An Update.

Among sinonasal malignancies, adenocarcinomas account for the second most common entity after squamous cell carcinoma. They span a wide spectrum of neoplasms with heterogeneous features including intestinal-type adenocarcinoma (ITAC), non-intestinal-type adenocarcinomas (non-ITACs), and salivary-type adenocarcinomas. ITAC basically mirrors the histopathological aspects of gastrointestinal counterparts, showing variable tubulo-papillary, colonic, and mixed patterns with mucin production in 20% to 25% of cases. By contrast, non-ITACs do not show any differentiation toward intestinal or salivary

Advanced penile lymphoma: Case report and review of the literature.

Primary penile lymphomas are extremely rare. They are aggressive neoplasms that can present as double-or triple-hit lymphomas, and because the associate with a high risk of central nervous system dissemination, treatment consists of high-dose chemotherapy regimens plus intrathecal prophylaxis. Pathology can be confused with squamous cell carcinoma of the penis, leading to inappropriate treatments and unnecessary amputations. We report the case of a patient diagnosed with clinical Stage IV penile non-Hodgkin lymphoma that was treated with a complete and durable response. In addition, we review

Malignant transformation of intracranial epidermoid cyst.

Intracranial epidermoid cysts (ECs) are rare, histologically benign, slow-growing, congenital neoplasms of central nervous system that may arise from retained ectodermal implants. Malignant transformation of an EC to squamous-cell carcinoma is rare; only 13 cases have been reported. We present the case of a 42-year-old woman presenting with left hemiparesis 18 months after performing partial resection of an epidermoid cyst of right middle and posterior fossa, whose pathological report revealed to be a malignant transformation of previous epidermoid tumor. Additionally, we performed pertinent l

Squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx in a young woman with Fanconi's anemia.

Fanconi's anemia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by congenital malformation, bone marrow failure and genomic instability, with a predisposition to develop malignancies, especially the leukemias and upper aerodigestive tract tumors. Due to inherent characteristics to this syndrome, the treatment of such neoplasms is particularly difficult. In this paper we report the case of a 24-year-old woman with Fanconi's anemia who developed a squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx; she had none of the traditional risk factors, such as smoking and alcohol abuse. We also briefly rev

[Computerized tomography of malignancies of the oral cavity, the oropharynx and hypopharynx and invasiveness].

Carcinomas of the oral cavity, oropharynx and hypopharynx represents 5% of all malignant neoplasms. The vast majority, over 90%, are squamous cell carcinomas; less common are lymphomas and tumors of the minor salivary glands. In general, the clinical findings already suggest the presence of a tumor. Therefore, the role of imaging is precise tumor localisation and staging of the malignancy. CT is still the gold standard, although MRI is gaining more importance. We present the CT appearance of most frequent malignancies of the oral cavity, oro- and hypopharynx, discussing briefly the pertinent a
