Functionally-defined compartments of the lordosis neural circuit in the ventromedial hypothalamus in female rats.

Sexual behavior in female rats, typified by the lordosis reflex, is dependent upon estrogen action in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) and its surrounding neuropil. However, the synaptic organization of this brain region remains unclear. Pseudorabies virus (PRV) was used to transneuronally label the neural network that innervates the lumbar epaxial muscles that execute the lordosis response. PRV-labeled neurons were identified within and subjacent to the VMH four days after injection of PRV into the back muscles. The pattern of labeling was defined in relation to three landma…

The activation of cerebral microvessels by ischemia is heterogeneous, involving alterations in integrin-matrix interactions, leukocyte-endothelial c …

Early activation of inhibitory neurons in the thalamic reticular nucleus during focal neocortical seizures.

The neurons of the thalamic reticular nucleus are among the main targets of corticothalamic projections and their vulnerability in pathologi … cells in the thalamic reticular nucleus were counted and related to total cell counts. Neurons and neuropil showed strong parvalbumin immunoreactivity. Double-stained sections revealed that 55.32% of the parvalbumin-positive cell population expressed c-fos protein in their cell nuclei at the end of the 1 h seizure period. This ratio decreased to 43.5% fol …

Immunohistochemical localization of advanced glycation end products, pentosidine, and carboxymethyllysine in lipofuscin pigments of Alzheimer's disease and aged neurons.

Lipofuscins are intracellular fluorescent pigments accumulating in the central nervous system (CNS) with aging and degenerative processes su … the AD and aged brain. Pentosidine, but not CML, was present in the fiber-like structure within the neuropil and the core of classical senile plaque. In the brain of young subjects without CNS disease, pentosidine and CML staining was faint. Pentosidine and CML co-localized with lipofuscin pigments in the neuronal perikarya of both the AD and aged brain. W …

Evidence for oxidative stress in Pick disease and corticobasal degeneration.

Oxidative stress is increasingly implicated in a number of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by abnormal filament accumulation in af … r of oxidative injury. Immunoreactivity to HO-1 was demonstrated in ballooned neurons, Pick bodies, neuropil threads, and glial inclusions (the latter two in a case of corticobasal degeneration). By immunoelectron microscopy, HO-1 immunolabelling of Pick bodies was closely associated with the abnormal filaments comprising the inclusion. Apparently unaffect …

The morphological alterations of the vestibular nuclei in a case of Jacob-Creutzfeld disease were studied with light and electron microscope … , (k) numerous multivesicular bodies and coated vesicles in pre- and postsynaptic terminals. In the neuropile space there were plenty of degenerated dendritic profiles. The degeneration of the vestibular nuclei of the brain stem was more extensive than the degeneration of the nuclei of the other brain stem cranial nerves.

A quantitative ultrastructural study of the effects of phenylacetate on synaptic organization in the developing rat cerebral cortex.

Male rats were injected with either phenylacetate (PA; a phenylalanine metabolite) or saline (control). Osmicated tissue from the parietal cortex was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, attention being focused on possible synaptic changes in the molecular layer. PA-treated rats differed from controls in the following ways: a 20% decrease in body weight at 21 days, and a reduction in brain weight at 10 and 21 days; the presence of 'atypical' profiles (possibly derived from axonal growth cones) in the neuropil; a lag in the accretion of synapses per 100 micron2 of tissue, and of vesicles …

Tauopathy in Drosophila: neurodegeneration without neurofibrillary tangles.

The microtubule-binding protein tau has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. However, the mechanisms underlying tau-mediated neurotoxicity remain unclear. We created a genetic model of tau-related neurodegenerative disease by expressing wild-type and mutant forms of human tau in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Transgenic flies showed key features of the human disorders: adult onset, progressive neurodegeneration, early death, enhanced toxicity of mutant tau, accumulation of abnormal tau, and relative anatomic selectivity. However, neurodegene

Novel microglomerular structures in the olfactory bulb of mice.

The murine olfactory system consists of two primary divisions: (1) a main olfactory system, in which olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) located in the main olfactory epithelium (MOE) send their axons to glomeruli in the main olfactory bulb (MOB); and (2) an accessory olfactory system, in which OSNs located in the vomeronasal organ send their axons to glomeruli in the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB). In labeling studies using the lectin Ulex europaeus agglutinin (UEA), we discovered a novel subset of small neuropilar structures in the MOB that are distinct from other glomeruli both in the MOB and …

Levels of amino acid neurotransmitters during mouse olfactory bulb neurogenesis and in histotypic olfactory bulb cultures.

The developmental changes in the levels of amino acid neurotransmitters were analyzed by high pressure liquid chromatography during mouse olfactory bulb neurogenesis, from embryonic day (E)13 until the young adult age, between postnatal days (P)30 and P40. During the embryonic period, high levels of glutamate, aspartate and GABA were observed, with the values of GABA about 2-fold higher than those of glutamate and aspartate. At P0, the production of these neurotransmitters experienced birth stress as shown by a significant 2-fold reduction in their levels. During the first two postnatal weeks,

Phosphorylated tau aggregation in the brains of aged Artiodactyla animals.

The aggregation of amyloid-β (Aβ) and phosphorylated tau (p-tau) in the human brain is associated with Alzheimer disease (AD). Although Aβ aggregation has been reported in various mammals, significant p-tau aggregation has been reported in only a few species. We examined Aβ and p-tau aggregation in the brains of 30 animals belonging to 12 artiodactyl species. Amyloid-β aggregates were observed in 2 animals (21 and 22 years old); p-tau aggregates were observed in all animals >9 years of age (n = 12). Regarding tau pathology, mildly affected animals exhibited neuropil threads (NTs), whereas seve…

Rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor of the cerebellum with intratumoral hemorrhage: case report with radiologic-pathologic correlation in a resource-limited setting.

Therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stem cells-derived exosomes on experimentally induced neurodegeneration in olfactory bulb of adult male albino rat: histological, physiological and biochemical studies.

Three-dimensional molecular atlas highlights spatial and neurochemical complexity in the axial nerve cord of octopus arms.

Exome sequencing in a child with neurodevelopmental disorder and epilepsy: Variant analysis of the AHNAK2 gene.

BACKGROUND: The AHNAK2 gene encodes a large nucleoprotein expressed in several tissues, including brain, squamous epithelia, smooth muscle, and neuropil.
