This study investigated a bench-scale anoxic-oxic activated sludge system for integrated removal of COD and nitrogen. The experimental unit includes four chambers and continuous feeding in first chamber without recycle of nitrified liquid from aerobic to anoxic chamber unlike the conventional anoxic-oxic process. Recycled excessive sludge was used for the purpose of recycling nitrified mixed liquor. Synthetic wastewater with average loading rates of 0.53 kg COD/m(3)/d and 0.067 kg NH4(+)-N/m(3)/d was fed to the reactor system at hydraulic residence times (HRT) of 24 and 18 h. The results of 10

Biochar and organic fertilizer have been widely applied to improve soil carbon sequestration and mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in rice production systems. However, the synergistic mechanisms through which these amendments regulate microbial carbon/nitrogen (C/N) metabolism, net GHG emissions, and crop productivity in dry direct-seeded rice (DDSR) systems remain insufficiently understood. In this study, a two-year field experiment was conducted with combined treatments of organic fertilizer substitution (0% and 20%) and biochar application (0, 5, and 10 t/hm2) to evaluate their integr

Acidic tea plantation soils with high nitrogen (N) inputs are recognized hotspots for nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO) emissions. However, field evidence on the combined effects of organic manure and a nitrification inhibitor (dicyandiamide, DCD) on both gases remains scarce, and previous global budgets have considered N2O only, leaving combined NO + N2O unquantified. Here, a replicated field experiment using static closed chambers was conducted in a subtropical tea plantation. Seven treatments were established: urea (CN), composted chicken manure (OM), and their 1:1 combination (HOM)

Small cascade ponds in peri‑urban karst areas are key reaction zones where nonpoint source inputs, solute transport and transformation, and carbonate weathering interact, yet their biogeochemical functions remain poorly understood. Here, hydrochemistry, multiple stable isotopes, principal component analysis-absolute principal component scores-multiple linear regression (PCA-APCS-MLR), and MixSIAR were integrated to determine how anthropogenic solute inputs affect pollutant fate and carbonate-weathering mechanisms in a peri‑urban karst cascade pond system. The Ca-HCO3 hydrochemical facies refle

Trichoderma has be proven to enhance plant growth under saline stress. However, there is limited research on Trichoderma-induced alterations of rhizosphere microbial communities in woody plants, and the subsequent effect on their yield is poorly understood. This study was carried out to investigate the growth-promoting mechanism of Trichoderma asperellum on wolfberry (Lycium chinense) in coastal saline land from bacterial community and diversity aspects through a field trial with Trichoderma agent application. Trichoderma agent application significantly increased fruit yield, plant dry weight

Fertilization and rhizosphere effects co-regulate soil N cycling and bacterial succession, with mechanistic understanding being key to improving crop yield and N transformation in intensive farmland. Based on a 16-year field experiment, six fertilization treatments with urea (U) and manure (M) alone or in combination (CK, U200, U100, M200, M100, and U100M100; subscript numbers denote nitrogen application rates in kg N ha-1) were established to clarify the responses of bacterial communities in two components (bulk and rhizosphere) and their associations with N dynamics and maize yield. Food-waste digestate contains valuable plant-available nutrients but is prone to reactive nitrogen losses and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions upon land application. Aeration of digestate offers a simple strategy to capture carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), and ammonia (NH3) released during processing while stabilising the liquid and reducing environmental risks when applied to soil. This study evaluated the effects of aeration on digestate stability and its subsequent impacts on soil nitrogen dynamics, GHG emissions, and microbial community responses. The agronomic and environmental pe

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) bacteria (AnAOB) play a vital role in the global nitrogen cycle and have emerged as a promising alternative for sustainable nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment. They directly convert ammonium and nitrite into dinitrogen gas under anaerobic conditions, without the need for high energy and external carbon associated with conventional nitrification-denitrification. With increasing global demands to mitigate nutrient pollution and improve water quality, a deeper understanding of AnAOB has become both scientifically significant and practically necessary.

Snowpack variations in cold regions exert profound influences on the ecological functioning of constructed wetlands (CWs), particularly with respect to GHG emissions and nutrient removal. However, the underlying mechanisms have yet to be clarified. This study established pilot-scale vertical subsurface flow CWs in Northeast China, with Phragmites australis and Iris sibirica, and applied doubled snowpack (DS) and natural snow cover (CK) during winter. DS created highly moist, strongly reducing, and alkaline conditions during the dormant period, significantly inhibiting microbial aerobic respira

Nitrogen removal is crucial for global wastewater recycling and reuse. Anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) is a revolutionary wastewater treatment technology, offering sustainable and cost-effective nitrogen removal solutions. However, the generation of 11 % nitrate (NO3-) as a byproduct remains a critical bottleneck, as it limits nitrogen-removal efficiency and requires external electron donors for further denitrification. To overcome this limitation, we propose an innovative integration of a green electrocatalytic reduction system, featuring a copper mesh-embedded membrane cathode, into th

Cryoconite holes (water and sediment-filled depressions), found on glacier surfaces worldwide, serve as reservoirs of microbes, carbon, trace elements, and nutrients, transferring these components downstream via glacier hydrological networks. Through targeted amplicon sequencing of carbon and nitrogen cycling genes, coupled with functional inference-based methods, we explore the functional diversity of these mini-ecosystems within Antarctica and the Himalayas. These regions showcase distinct environmental gradients and experience varying rates of environmental change influenced by global clima

The aqueous-phase conversion of phenolic compounds (PhCs) driven by nitrite photolysis has been recognized as a significant source of secondary brown carbon (BrC). However, the influence of pH on the conversion kinetics and product distribution of PhCs remains unclear. In this study, three representative PhCs with varying functional groups were selected to examine their aqueous-phase conversion kinetics in the presence of nitrite under different pH conditions and simulated sunlight conditions. The results indicate that as the pH increases, the decay rates of PhCs decrease, following first-orde

Raw biochar with high pH possibly stimulated ammonia (NH3) volatilization in the agricultural soil. We hypothesized that the modified biochar (MBC) with low pH can synchronically decrease the NH3 and nitrous oxide (N2O) losses. We performed a two-year experiment to clarify how citric acid MBC influence the NH3 volatilization and N2O emission as well as the underlying mechanisms. Two typical paddy soils, i.e., Hydragric Anthrosol and Haplic Acrisol, receiving equal urea N with 240 kg ha-1 but varied rates of MBC with 0, 5, 10, and 20 t ha-1 (named Urea, Urea + MBC5, Urea + MBC10, and Urea + MBC

The drilosphere is a biogeochemical hotspot, but its role in biochar-assisted remediation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil remains unclear. Comparisons were made between fresh (RS) and aged rice straw (ARS) biochar treatments at different Cd contamination levels to assess their effects on the drilosphere microenvironment. The results showed that ARS biochar was more effective in forming a low‑Cd, high‑nutrient hotspot, reducing total Cd in burrow wall soil (BWS) by 13.42% and increased TOC, TN, and TP by 17.89%, 76.16%, and 132.36% (P < 0.05). Enzyme activity followed BWS > lightly disturbed

Biofilters offer decentralized nitrogen treatment but often show variable performance across influent types. This study evaluated anammox-enhanced biofilters (A-BF, inoculated with enriched anammox biomass) and control biofilters (C-BF) treating wastewater (WW), stormwater (SW), and greywater (GW) under synthetic and real conditions for 54 weeks. Under synthetic conditions, A-BF outperformed C-BF, with the greatest improvement in ammonium-rich WW, where TN removal reached 65.7±5.1% compared with 17.2±2.4% in C-BF. This was supported by enrichment of Candidatus Brocadia (1.19%) and high anammox

The resilience of ammonia-oxidizing guilds can regulate nitrification after drought, yet how nitrogen input modifies guild-specific recovery and post-drought nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions remains unclear. We conducted a 90-day cultivation experiment with subtropical acidic red soil, including 30 days of drought stress followed by 60 days of rewetting recovery. Treatments included a constant-moisture control (CK), post-drought recovery without nitrogen addition (N0), low nitrogen addition (NL, 20 mg N kg-1), and high nitrogen addition (NH, 100 mg N kg-1). This study aimed to determine how nitro

BACKGROUND: The efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) relies heavily on microbial communities. However, the microbial characteristics of different treatment units in the Qian'an WWTP (Hebei, China) remain unclear. This study investigates its microbial diversity and functions to provide a basis for process optimization.
METHODS: Samples were collected in October 2024 from four representative units were selected: sludge (group A), sedimentation tank water (group C), aeration tank water (group E), and raw wastewater (group F). Bacterial and fungal communities were analyzed via Illumi

Complex mixtures of anthropogenic micropollutants (MPs) pose risks to ecosystems and health by entering the environment through multiple pathways. Microbial biotransformation is a major removal process, yet the key drivers remain poorly understood. Activated sludge (AS) treatment in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) acts as a partial barrier and reduces MP emissions into aquatic ecosystems, yet removal efficiencies vary widely across MPs. Here, we studied the biotransformation of 189 MPs in AS from six Swiss WWTPs operated at three treatment conditions: carbon elimination (Celim), nitrificat

The Fairy ring (FR) is a circular formation created by the mycelium of the FR fungus during its dynamic proliferation in the soil. FRs were categorized into three types based on their varying effects on adjacent plants. Type I FRs (T1) cause extensive damage with wilting and necrosis, Type II FRs (T2) promote growth with dark-green zones, and Type III FRs (T3) feature fruiting bodies with minimal impact on vegetation. T2 FR often display conspicuous growth-promoting zones and thus are studied more frequently than other types. Here we compare three FR types-Agrocybe sp. (T1), Agaricus campestri

Emerging contaminants (ECs), including pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, personal care products, endocrine-disrupting compounds and persistent industrial chemicals, are increasingly detected in wastewater effluents because many are poorly removed by conventional treatment and may form biologically active transformation products. This review critically evaluates hybrid constructed wetlands (HCWs) as engineered biodegradation platforms for EC attenuation, with emphasis on microbial pathways, redox-zonation and substrate-mediated transformation. HCWs integrate vertical-flow, horizontal subsurface-flo
