Relationships between intestinal calcium absorption, serum vitamin D metabolites and smoking in postmenopausal women.

Smoking has been associated with low bone density, fractures and poor intestinal calcium absorption. Calcium absorption is a critical factor … iously and 74 were current smokers. The hourly fractional rate of calcium absorption was similar in non-smokers and those who had previously smoked. Radiocalcium absorption was less in the 74 smokers compared with the 331 non-smokers [0.60 (0.29 SD) vs 0.71 (0.27); p = 0.004], as were serum calcitriol (p<0.001) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) (p<0.01). Evidence of Organ-Specific Metal Accumulation: ICP-MS Elemental Analysis of Autopsy Tissues of Tobacco Smokers.

Cigarette smoking exposes individuals to numerous toxic substances, including heavy metals. Smokers are at risk due to the accumulation of these substances in various tissues. Objective: To compare the concentrations of 41 elements in 11 brain regions, the spinal cord, the bronchial, the lungs, and the liver in smokers (n = 11) and non-smokers (n = 17). Elemental composition was determined by ICP-MS after wet digestion in a microwave system. The following toxic elements were detected at levels of µg/g w.w.: Al, Cd, Pb, Ba, As, Ni, and Tl. Significantly higher concentrations of Al were detected…

Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons could cause their oxidative DNA damage: a case study for college students in Guangzhou, China.

Human exposure to carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in cigarette smoking might result in generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induce formation of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG). This study was designed to examine whether levels of 8-OHdG are associated with levels of urinary metabolites of PAHs. Two groups (smokers and non-smokers) were recruited from college students in Guangzhou, China. Their urine samples were collected and analyzed for ten urinary mono-hydroxylated PAHs (OH-PAHs) and 8-OHdG by liquid chromatography equipped with tandem mass spectrometer …

Brief Report on Sociodemographic Patterns of Lung Cancer in Individuals Who Never Smoked.

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer in individuals who never smoked (LCINS) is a distinct disease, not captured by existing smoking-based screening guidelines. As smoking rates decline, people who have never smoked represent a growing share of the lung cancer burden. It remains unknown whether this burden falls disproportionately across distinct demographic subgroups. Understanding these trends is critical for informing screening policy and reducing disparities. We sought to evaluate the proportion of LCINS over time and characterize variation across key demographic subgroups in a large, diverse cohort.

Assessment of smoking exposure by urine cotinine levels in severe COVID-19 patients: a case-control study.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by SARS-CoV-2, has posed a significant global public health challenge, with long-term sequelae such as post-COVID-19 syndrome continuing to burden health systems. Tobacco use, a major preventable cause of morbidity and mortality, impairs the immune response and exacerbates respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. Passive smoking, an important but often overlooked public health problem, exposes non-smokers to harmful health risks and may contribute to worse outcomes in respiratory disease. This study aims to investigate the relationship between smoki…

Urinary cotinine cut-off value in categorising cigarette smoking status in healthy pregnant women at term.

Future mothers tend to underreport intentional or unintentional tobacco smoke exposure to avoid social stigma, and urine levels of cotinine, the major metabolite of nicotine can serve as a valuable biomarker of tobacco smoke exposure to resolve such uncertainties. When establishing the cut-off level to discern non-smokers from active smokers, however, one should bear in mind the shorter half-life of cotinine in pregnant than non-pregnant women to avoid misclassification of maternal smoking status. The aim of our study was to determine the urinary cotinine cut-off level to objectively detect ac…

Tobacco and oral diseases--report of EU Working Group, 1999.

Smoking often results in discolourations of teeth and dental restorations. Halitosis, diminished taste and smell acuity are common side effects of smoking. Periodontal disease is increased both in prevalence and severity in smokers. Smoking cessation may halt the disease progression and improve the outcome of periodontal treatment. Oral cancer and precancer occurs much more frequently in smokers than in non-smokers. Smoking cessation significantly decreases the increased risk of oral cancer within 5-10 years. Dental implant failure rates are significantly higher in smokers than in non-smokers.…
