Creating environments of care with transgender communities.

Partnerships between transgender individuals and community health nurses have been a primary source of monitoring and responding to the impact of the HIV epidemic on transgender communities, specifically transgender women. This article provides two perspectives: first, from a transgender service provider, and second, from a public health nurse, on forming partnerships that brought consumers and providers together to create environments of care in which many transgender persons living with and at high risk of HIV were able to engage with medical providers who believed in their right to self-det

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or intersexed content for nursing curricula.

There has been limited identification of core lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or intersexed (LGBTI) experience concepts that should be included in the nursing curricula. This article addresses the gap in the literature. To move nursing toward the goals of health equity and cultural humility in practice, education, and research, nursing curricula must integrate core LGBTI concepts, experiences, and needs related to health and illness. This article reviews LGBTI health care literature to address the attitudes, knowledge, and skills needed to address curricular gaps and provide content sug

Use of Antivibration Technology to Reduce Demands for In-Home Nursing Care and Support in Rural Settings for Persons with Essential Tremors: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: With the increased integration of technologies in the healthcare sector, it is important to understand the benefits emerging technologies may play to reduce demands on the health care system. The Steadiwear antivibration glove shows promise for enhancing the independence in functional abilities for persons with essential tremors and for alleviating the need for support from the health care system. The objective of this study was to examine Registered Nurses' (RN) perceptions of the potential for the Steadiwear antivibration glove to reduce the need for in-person support from comm

[The care pathway for patients with chronic kidney disease: The essential coordination between community health care professionals and care facilities].

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health issue, affecting around 10% of the world’s population. Its silent progression and its numerous etiologies (most commonly diabetes and vascular nephropathies) complicate early detection and management. Many patients reach kidney failure without prior nephrological care. Coordination between outpatient care (GPs, pharmacists, nurses) and specialist facilities is therefore essential to improve screening, delay the progression to dialysis, and improve patients’ quality of life. The CKD package, introduced in 2019, provides financial support to

Assessing and responding to infant mental health needs.

Early recognition of mental health problems in maltreated infants, coupled with tailored support to aid recovery, has the potential to offer significant benefits to a population whose needs have perhaps remained hidden in the past. All forms of maltreatment may adversely affect infant mental health, but perhaps none more so than emotional neglect. Universal contact with families with young children makes health visitors ideally placed to provide early support to this vulnerable group, but such practice requires considerable knowledge and understanding. This paper examines how emotional neglect

Assessing risk for violence on home health visits.

The objective of this study was to develop and test measures for assessing risk of violence toward staff during home visits. Home visiting health workers from public and private home visiting programs in a Mid-Atlantic state (n = 130) were surveyed to assess exposure to risky home visits, verbal and physical violence, and workplace violence safety climate. Two measures demonstrated evidence of reliability and validity moving the safety research closer to developing tools and processes for protecting home care clinicians.

Nursing professional practice environments: setting the stage for constructive conflict resolution and work effectiveness.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the impact of nurses' perceived professional practice environment on their quality of nursing conflict management approaches and ultimately their perceptions of unit effectiveness from the perspective of Deutsch's theory of constructive conflict management. However, research on the situational factors that influence nurses' ability to apply effective conflict resolution skills that lead

Conversation as therapy for older adults in residential care: the case for intervention.

Social isolation resulting from sensory loss tends to reduce life satisfaction in older adults. Residence in a long-term care facility such as a nursing home does little to alleviate their communication needs. Potenial communication partners are available (e.g. other residents, family and friends, nursing staff, volunteers, health-care workers), but many need instruction, counselling and feedback to become therapeutically effective. The speech pathologist's experience as both communication therapist and social facilitator can enhance consultation and staff training in this area.

Results of a nurse-led workshop designed to prevent fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Preventing the negative consequences of prenatal exposure to alcohol remains an unmet challenge. This paper presents the results of a workshop, designed to increase the implementation of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) prevention interventions in 8 counties of New York. The workshop was based on constructivist learning theory and used the Population-Based Public Health Nursing Intervention Model as the structure for discussing potential interventions. The number and type of FASD interventions implemented were determined by surveys sent out postworkshop to 167 participants. At 4 months
