Nurses' Roles in Managing Erectile Dysfunction: A Mixed-Method Systematic Review.

Sexual health is a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, with erectile dysfunction (ED) being one of the most prevalent sexual disorders. Nurses play a crucial role in addressing the needs of patients experiencing ED, yet their specific roles and responsibilities remain underexplored. We conducted a mixed-methods systematic review to examine the general and specific roles of registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) in caring for patients with ED. Relevant studies were identified through searches in Academic Search Complete (EBSCO), Embase, PubMed, ProQuest, Cochrane Library, a

Prognosis of falls among elderly nursing home residents.

The survival rate of 207 nursing home residents who fell during a two-month study period was followed for 12 months and compared with that of 94 residents of the same nursing home who did not fall during the same period. One year after the fall, 74 fallers and 13 controls had died. In the group of fallers, the main factors associated with mortality were male gender, dementia, Parkinsonism, the use of antidepressants, diuretics and vasodilators. Among the controls, the main factors associated with mortality were Parkinsonism, diabetes and the use of diuretics. Thirty-eight fallers (33 women and

The management of children with Hunter syndrome - a case study.

Hunter syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis type II) is a rare lysosomal storage disease caused by a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme iduronate-2-sulphatase and the subsequent progressive cellular accumulation of glycosaminoglycans. Children with this debilitating disease can now be offered enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with idursulfase to manage the signs and symptoms of the disease and to improve quality of life. As therapy involves a weekly infusion of enzyme, travel to the few designated specialist centres that provide treatment can be highly disruptive for both patients and carers. Provid

Medication review and transitions of care: a case report of a decade-old medication error.

A 69-year-old Caucasian male with a 25-year history of paranoid schizophrenia was brought to the emergency department because of violence toward the staff in his nursing facility. He was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and was admitted to the behavioral health unit for medication stabilization. History included a five-year state psychiatric hospital admission and nursing facility placement. Because of poor cognitive function, the patient was unable to corroborate medication history, so the pharmacy student on rotation performed an in-depth chart review. The review revealed a transcrip

Nursing sickness in the mink--a metabolic mystery or a familiar foe?

Nursing sickness, the largest single cause of mortality in adult female mink (Mustela vison), is an example of a metabolic disorder, which develops when the demands for lactation require extensive mobilization of body energy reserves. The condition is characterized by progressive weight loss, emaciation, and dehydration with high concentrations of glucose and insulin in the blood. Morbidity due to nursing sickness can be as high as 15% with mortality around 8%, but the incidence is known to vary from year to year. Stress has been shown to trigger the onset of the disease and old females and fe

Melatonin Is a Feasible, Safe, and Acceptable Intervention in Doctors and Nurses Working Nightshifts: The MIDNIGHT Trial.

Nightshift working is associated with sleep deprivation, fatigue and attention/concentration deficits which, in healthcare workers, may impact on patient safety. Clinical staff in the UK routinely work several 12 h nightshifts in a row at about 1-3 month intervals. We investigated the feasibility and acceptability of a crossover trial of melatonin administration in clinical staff working nightshifts with an exploration of effects on sleep measures and attention/concentration tasks. This was a pilot, double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover feasibility trial in doctors and nurse

Aggression in psychiatry wards: a systematic review.

Although fairly frequent in psychiatric in-patient, episodes of aggression/violence are mainly limited to verbal aggression, but the level of general health is significantly lower in nurses who report 'frequent' exposure to violent incidents, and there is disagreement between patients and staff concerning predictors of these episodes. We searched the Pubmed, Embase and PsychInfo databases for English, Italian, French or German language papers published between 1 January 1990 and 31 March 2010 using the key words "aggress*" (aggression or aggressive) "violen*" (violence or violent) and "in-pati
