Laser surgery for retinopathy of prematurity.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a common eye disorder occurring in preterm infants. Formally known as retrolental fibroplasia, ROP is defined as a vasoproliferative disorder that occurs in the developing retina of premature infants' eyes. Until recently, cryotherapy was the recommended treatment for infants diagnosed with advancing ROP. Now laser surgery is being used as an alternative treatment. This article reviews the pathophysiology, etiology, and classification of ROP, considers the pros and cons of laser surgery versus cryotherapy, and outlines the experience with laser surgery in ou

Home phototherapy.

Home phototherapy has both social and economic benefits: newborns diagnosed with neonatal bilirubin jaundice can leave the hospital with their mothers, and home treatment can realize a cost-savings of up to 50%. As pediatric home care expands, agencies may want to consider adding home phototherapy to their array of services.

Burnout Dimensions and Job Satisfaction Among Critical Care Nurses at a Regional Hospital in Oman: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Work-Related Contributing Factors.

BACKGROUND: Burnout and job satisfaction are major concerns among critical care nurses, yet evidence from Oman's regional hospitals remains limited. This study examined the relationship between burnout and job satisfaction among critical care nurses. METHOD: A cross-sectional correlational design was used, with a stratified sample of 150 critical care nurses across five units at an Omani regional hospital. Data were collected using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS (MP)) and the job satisfaction survey (JSS) and were analyzed using SPSS v31. R

Phototherapy in the home setting.

Physiologic jaundice is a self-limiting process affecting approximately 50% of normal-term infants during the first week of life. Phototherapy has proven to be effective in reducing or preventing the rise in bilirubin levels in the newborn when it is related to this natural process. However, phototherapy generally prolongs the length of hospital stay for the jaundiced newborn. The trend toward early discharge and the increase in the availability of highly sophisticated technical equipment designed for home use affords the family the opportunity to actively engage in the decision to take their

Expanding Contraceptive Access for Women With Substance Use Disorders: Partnerships Between Public Health Departments and County Jails.

CONTEXT: Law enforcement has been the primary strategy for addressing the opioid epidemic. As a result, the incarceration rate for women in county jails has increased more than 800% since 1980, and most women inmates struggle with substance use disorders. There is a large unmet need for contraception among women in county jails. PROGRAM: The East Region of the Tennessee Department of Health partnered with county correctional facilities to provide comprehensive family planning education and voluntary long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) to women in 15 jails. IMPLEMENTATION: Incarcerate

Hydrops fetalis with isolated massive ascites in a preterm neonate with rhesus disease.

Significant progress in prenatal care has decreased the incidence of rhesus incompatibility, which may result in hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). This case report describes an unusual presentation of HDFN in a preterm infant delivered by caesarean section with isolated massive abdominal fluid collection as the leading clinical sign in addition to severe anemia. The immediate drainage of ascites provided transient clinical stabilization with improved pulmonary function in the delivery suite. After admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), HDFN treatment was initiat

The effect of tub bathing on stress, comfort, and physiological parameters in newborns.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of tub bathing on stress levels, comfort, and physiological parameters in newborns undergoing phototherapy. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 62 newborns receiving phototherapy in a university hospital neonatal intensive care unit (June 2024-June 2025). Infants were randomized to an experimental (tub bathing) or a control group. Physiological parameters, stress (Neonatal Stress Scale), and comfort (Neonatal Comfort Behavior Scale) were assessed at three time points: before, 15 min after initiation, and 15 min before

Physiology of a microgravity environment selected contribution: effects of spaceflight during pregnancy on labor and birth at 1 G.

The events of parturition (labor, delivery, maternal care, placentophagia, and onset of nursing) were analyzed in female Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) flown on either 11- or 9-day-long spaceflights beginning at the approximate midpoint of their pregnancies. Each space shuttle flight landed on the 20th day of the rats' pregnancies, just 48-72 h before parturition. After spaceflight, dams were continuously monitored and recorded by time-lapse videography throughout the completion of parturition and onset of nursing (days 22 and 23). Analyses of parturition revealed that, compared with ground c

[Behavioral teratogenesis and placental, milk, and blood-brain barrier transfer following prenatal and postnatal exposures to chlorpromazine in rats].

In order to determine behavioral teratogenesis of fetal and neonatal exposures to chlorpromazine (CPZ) in rats, conditioned avoidance learning by shuttle box in pups was examined. CPZ was administered sc to pregnant and nursing rats during fetal organogenesis period (on days 11-15 of gestation, at doses of 9, 21 mg/kg/day), perinatal period (on days 16-20 of gestation, at 9, 18 mg/kg/day), and nursing period (on days 1-10 postpartum, at 9, 18 mg/kg/day). The results showed that high doses of CPZ during all periods caused learning impairment in pups, although learning impairment by the exposure

The Golden Hour: care of the LBW infant during the first hour of life one unit's experience.

Care practices during the first hour of life, the Golden Hour, can have a significant impact on outcomes of low birth weight infants. Although the latest edition of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program added guidelines for preterm infants, additional care is often indicated. Complications that could potentially be impacted by care in the first hour of life include thermoregulation, intraventricular hemorrhage, chronic lung disease, and retinopathy of prematurity. Our unit has implemented and revised a Golden Hour evidence-based care process that includes the use of realistic videotaped simulatio

Follow-up of infants prenatally exposed to cocaine.

Maternal cocaine use during pregnancy continues to be of great concern for health care professionals. Research in this area has increased as investigators examine the effects of prenatal cocaine exposure in the infant/young child. This paper will critically review the literature, identify the primary care needs of infants and young children with a known history of prenatal cocaine exposure, and present guidelines for the primary care practitioner to monitor the infant's physiologic and developmental sequelae during the first 3 years of life. Findings in the literature demonstrate inconsistenci

Through the nurse's lens: Bereavement photography and creative interventions in nursing care.

Art has long supported healing, and, in nursing, creative practices such as music, writing, and photography enhance holistic care by fostering connection, emotional well-being, and comfort during end-of-life moments. Bereavement photography, particularly in neonatal and pediatric settings, provides families with a tangible way to honor and remember their child, while also helping nurses and caregivers process their grief. Research shows that images are deeply valued as keepsakes of life and love, and when offered with ethical, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed approaches, photography b
