Records of the sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic visits of 12,728 patients in Columbus, Ohio were analyzed to better understand the behavior patterns of these patients. Among heterosexual men, a greater proportion of Blacks than Whites reported a previous history of urethritis. After controlling for previous STD among heterosexual men with discharge or dysuria, we found that Black men sought treatment sooner and were more likely to curtail sexual activity than White men after becoming symptomatic with gonorrhea or nongonococcal urethritis.

Seven cases of congenital cardiac anomalies in calves were reviewed from the files of the Ohio Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The collection of material occurred during a six-month period from June 1977 to January 1978. The major clinical signs were dyspnoea, failure to gain weight and sudden death in young animals. The cardiac defects included two patent ductus arteriosus, two anomalies of the coronary vessels, one persistent truncus arteriosus, one transposition of the aorta and pulmonary artery and one ventricular septal defect.

Age adjusted mortality rates for the 1969-1971 adult population in the United States reveal a consistent pattern of 13% excess cancer mortality in the metropolitan counties with central cities compared to non-metropolitan counties. Only 14% of all cancer death exhibit a different pattern. A detailed analysis of cancer mortality in Cuyahoga County, (Cleveland), Ohio, during the years 1969-1971, shows that apart from cancer mortality of the respiratory tract, general air pollution characteristics correlate secondarily with mortality, compared with socioeconomic factors.

Histoplasma capsulatum is the most common endemic mycosis in the United States and usually occurs in certain geographic areas, such as the Mississippi or Ohio River valleys. Histoplasmosis is the most prevalent endemic mycosis in the United States with the highest incidence in the Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys. Most infections are asymptomatic or self-limited. However, in immunocompromised patients, severe and progressive disseminated infection can occur. Primary pulmonary histoplasmosis is found worldwide, and is particularly endemic in some areas of North America, usually those surrounding the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys. The incidence of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) had been declining in the United States for decades, and by the late 1970s ARF had become a rare disease in most areas of the country. The mid-1980s saw a resurgence of ARF, with reported outbreaks in Utah, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and military recruit camps in Missouri and California, as well as sporadic cases in many other communities. This review summarizes salient epidemiologic data related to the resurgence, explores some possible explanations for its occurrence, and discusses strategies for prevention of rheumatic fever now and in the future.

Histoplasmosis is the most common cause of fungal infection in the Ohio River Valley of the United States. Ninety-nine per cent of patients exposed to histoplasmosis develop only subclinical infections. Liver involvement is common in disseminated histoplasmosis, which usually originates in the lungs. There has been only one prior case described in the literature of histoplasmosis presenting as an isolated liver mass. We report a rare case that presented as a solitary right-sided liver lesion invading the diaphragm, with review of the literature for therapy of histoplasmosis of the liver.

During routine lower extremity laboratory dissection at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, an anomalous muscle, the flexor digitorum accessorius longus was uncovered on one male and one female cadaver. The muscles were located in the deep posterior compartment of the leg and were of differing sizes and origins. This anomalous muscle has been implicated as an etiology for tarsal tunnel syndrome. In cases of tarsal tunnel syndrome that undergo surgical decompression, the flexor digitorum accessorius longus muscle may be present and may be the cause of the tibial nerve compression.
