Trout caeca are vermiform structures projecting from the anterior intestine of the gastrointestinal tract. Despite their simple gross morphology, these appendages are physically distinct along the anterior-posterior axis, and ultrastructural evidence suggests zonation of function within the structures. Individual caeca from three sections (anterior, middle and posterior) were removed from the intestine of freshwater rainbow trout and investigated for ion transport and enzyme activity. Ca2+ absorption appeared as a combination of active and passive movement, with Michaelis-Menten kinetics obser

Ten experimental and 10 control experiments on a parallel swing and 4 experiments on a rotating stand were carried out on the fries of the trout Salmo gairdneri, strain Rofor. Depending on changes of motor activity the fish could be divided into three groups: the "freezing" fish, in which the mean swimming rate dropped sharply with the beginning of swinging; (2) the shuttle-swimming fish, in which the mean swimming rate in the process of swinging practically did not change, but which with beginning of swinging started the from-wall-towall swimming in the horizontal plane by changing direction

Two species of salmon (masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou and pink salmon O. gorbuscha) captured in the northern Sea of Japan during April 1990 were examined for infection by adult female salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) to assess the relative importance of each to the parasite. Masu salmon had relatively low prevalence and abundance of infection and carried less than 4% of the estimated parasite population, indicating that masu salmon are utilized rarely by L. salmonis and may not be important hosts. In contrast, the infection level on pink salmon was higher, with pink salmon carrying more t…

Seasonal rhythms in growth hormone (GH) secretion are well-documented in salmonids, but whether these patterns reflect hypothalamic control or intrinsic pituitary programming remains unclear. Here I report that rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) pituitaries exhibit robust seasonal variation in basal GH secretion under standardized in vitro perifusion conditions, independent of hypothalamic input. Analysis of 3,511 measurements from 66 individually perifused pituitaries across seven months revealed highly significant seasonal differences (one-way ANOVA: F6,3504 = 27.90, P < 0.001, η2 = 0.046; …

The genus Weissella belongs to the lactic acid bacteria group. It occurs naturally in foods and is a component of the human microbiome. A few Weissella species are candidate probiotics due to their potential for survival under the harsh conditions present in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals. Various species have also shown potential for treating and preventing periodontal disease, skin pathologies, and atopic dermatitis; some are used as starters for the fermentation of foods due to their production of exopolysaccharides; and others are used as protective cultures due to their

A total of 26 Vibrio damsela strains were isolated in Denmark. Fifteen strains were isolated from the head kidney of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in aquaculture, eight were from organs of two stingrays (Dasyatis pastinaca) held in captivity, two were from organs and pathological material of a nurse shark (Orectolobus ornatus) held in captivity, and one was from the water in the aquarium where the rays and shark were kept. This is the first report on the isolation of V. damsela in Denmark and the first report on this organism associated with diseased farmed rainbow trout. Ecological and …

A review of requests for niclosamide ( Niclocide or Yomesan ) made to the Centers for Disease Control Parasitic Diseases Drug Service indicated that an outbreak of diphyllobothriasis occurred in west coast states in 1980, and in the Los Angeles area in 1981. Our investigation of 52 infections that occurred in 1980 implicates fresh salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) as the host for the Diphyllobothrium parasite in 82% of the persons interviewed. We describe here common symptoms of the infection, methods of fish preparation employed by infected individuals, and epidemiologic data. We suggest that change…

When adult spawning salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, 0. kisutch) arrive at the "home" pond, most regions of the brain are electrically inactive, but the olfactory bulbs and posterior cerebellum are relatively highly active. Infusion of various natural waters from nearby sources other than the home pond into the olfactory sac produces little or no change in spontaneous electroencephalographic patterns recorded from the olfactory bulbs. Water from the home pond, however, produces a vigorous response of high amplitude. These findings suggest that olfaction is an important factor in guidance duri…

Influence of fish personality on infection rate is poorly studied. In the experiments on young-of-the-year Oncorhynchus mykiss and cercariae of the trematode Diplostomum pseudospathaceum, we tested the hypothesis that infection rate differs between more and less active ("bold" and "shy") fish. Will individual differences in infection persist upon re-infection? Fish serve as a second intermediate host for this trematode. Positive correlation was found between the results of consecutive infections. Accumulation of parasites with successive infections leads to an aggregated distribution of D. pse…

Acoustic telemetry has emerged as an important tool for studying the movement and behavior of aquatic animals. Predation-sensing acoustic transmitters combine the functions of typical acoustic transmitters with the added ability to identify the predation of tagged animals. The objective of this paper was to assess the performance of a newly miniaturized acid-based predation-sensing acoustic transmitter (Innovasea V3D; 0.33 g in air). We conducted staged predation events in the laboratory where acoustically tagged rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were fed to largemouth bass (Micropterus nigr…

This study enhances the current limited understanding of the interaction between mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) species in fish. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), a model aquaculture fish, was exposed to Hg and Se species through controlled dietary conditions. Over a 6-month feeding trial, the impact of dietary Se on Hg bioaccumulation in fish, including flesh, brain, and liver, was tracked. Twelve dietary conditions were tested, including plant-based diets (0.25 µgSe g-1) and tuna byproduct diets (0.25 µgHg g-1, 8.0 µgSe g-1) enriched with methylmercury and/or Se as selenite or selenomethi…

The formation of dominance hierarchies in pairs of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) results in subordinate individuals exhibiting chronically elevated plasma cortisol concentrations. Cortisol levels reflect a balance between cortisol production, which is coordinated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis in teleost fish, and negative feedback regulation and hormone clearance, which act to lower cortisol levels. However, the mechanisms contributing to the longer-term elevation of cortisol levels during chronic stress are not well established in fishes. The current study…

Marker-assisted selective breeding of fish with higher levels of resistance towards specific pathogens may improve fish health, but the impact of host genotype on susceptibility to multiple pathogen infections is still poorly investigated. This study examined the resistance in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss towards infection with the eye fluke Diplostomum pseudospathaceum. We used genetically selected rainbow trout, carrying SNPs associated with resistance towards the parasitic ciliate Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, and exposed the fish to eye fluke cercariae. We showed that fish partly resi…

Flavobacterium psychrophilum affects many cultured fish species and is considered one of the most important bacterial pathogens causing substantial economic losses in salmonid aquaculture worldwide. Here, F. psychrophilum was identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and nested PCR as the aetiological agent causing mortality in diseased juvenile Siberian sturgeons (Acipenser baerii) reared on a freshwater fish farm. Diseased sturgeons were lethargic and displayed dark skin pigmentation, increased mucus production and the presence

To gain insight into pre-contact Coast Salish fishing practices, we used new palaeogenetic analytical techniques to assign sex identifications to salmonid bones from four archaeological sites in Burrard Inlet (Tsleil-Waut), British Columbia, Canada, dating between about 2300-1000 BP (ca. 400 BCE-CE 1200). Our results indicate that male chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) were preferentially targeted at two of the four sampled archaeological sites. Because a single male salmon can mate with several females, selectively harvesting male salmon can increase a fishery's maximum sustainable harvest. We …

Fish is the most indispensable source of proteins for individuals and have high nutritional value. On the other hand, the fish culturing raised issues of fish health due to close contact between the aquatic environment and the fish pathogens. So, the aim of the current study was to identify the bacterial pathogens and screen the injured Rainbow trout rearing in different trout hatcheries run under fisheries department of the government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan. Seven bacterial pathogens such as Shigella flexneri, Enterobacter amnigenus, Salmonella Typhimurium, Serratia odorifera, Ps

A new species from a yet undescribed group of small monotactic amoebae was isolated from a cage with farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Artificial salinization of the original water sample to 18‰ was required to recognize and isolate this amoeba, whereas in cultures with a salinity level corresponding to freshwater, the amoebae were in an encysted state. The studied amoeba is closely related to the clade of strains isolated from the internal tissues of various fish: the liver of tench (Tinca tinca), the liver of carp (Cyprinus carpio), and the kidney of freshwater stinging catfish (He…
