PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of closed/open reduction and titanium elastic nails (TENs) in children with severely displaced proximal humeral fractures.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on 37 children suffering from proximal humeral fracture between April 2009 and July 2012. All these patients were treated by closed or open reduction with TEN fixation. The healing process was assessed by radiographic and clinical follow-up for up to 36 months. Radiographic assessment was performed on the scheduled follow-ups to examine fracture healing, remodel

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the approach of open reduction and internal fixation for the treatment of anteromedial coronoid facet fractures and associated injury.
METHODS: From July 2009 to August 2011, 6 coronoid anteromedial facet fractures were treated (4 males and 2 females, the average age was 32.6 years old, ranged from 19 to 49 years old) in our hospital. Three patients had fractures in the left side and 3 in the right(4 dominant sides and 2 non dominant sides). All the patients had close fractures. All the fractures were subtype 2 or subtype 3 of coronoid anteromedial facet fracture accor

OBJECTIVES: Concomitant ligamentous injury in distal radius fractures (DRF) may explain continued pain following surgery. The purpose of this study was to compare radiographic measurements assessing scaphoid translation in DRF after reduction, to measurements performed on normal radiographs. This may allow noninvasive evaluation of radiocarpal ligamentous integrity.
METHODS: Fifty postoperative radiographs were evaluated. The distance between the ulnar border of the radial styloid and the radial border of the scaphoid was measured midway between the styloid tip and scaphoid base, and then div

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar fractures of the elbow are common in children. Their treatment is controversial when displacement has occurred, although percutaneous pinning is usually advocated.
HYPOTHESIS: In paediatric extension-type supracondylar fractures of the elbow, percutaneous pinning and crossed K-wire fixation after open reduction via the medial approach produce similar functional outcomes and complication rates.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical charts of 58 children aged 2 to 15 years who underwent surgery for extension-type supracondylar elbow fractures

BACKGROUND: Bennett fractures are unstable, and, with inadequate treatment, lead to osteoarthritis, weakness and loss of function of the first carpometacarpal joint. This study focuses on long-term functional and radiological outcomes after open reduction and internal fixation.
METHODS: Between June 1997 and December 2005, 24 patients with Bennett fractures were treated with open reduction and internal fixation with screws at our center. Radiological and functional assessments including range of motion of the thumb and pinch and grip strength were performed 4 months post-procedure and at the

BACKGROUND: High-energy tibial plateau fractures may present with an acute or impending compartment syndrome requiring emergent fasciotomy. There is little information regarding the optimal management of the fasciotomy wound with respect to the subsequent definitive internal fixation of the tibial plateau fracture. The purpose of this study was to compare the rate of infection complication after internal fixation of tibial plateau fractures in patients requiring fasciotomy for compartment syndrome with patients in whom a fasciotomy was not required.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all ti

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the long-term (5-27 years) functional and radiologic results of surgically treated tibial spine fractures.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: University hospital.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-four surgically treated consecutive patients with 44 displaced tibial spine fractures were included in this study. All fractures were classified according to a modified Meyers and McKeever classification. There were 24 men and 20 women. The mean age at time of accident was 24 years (range 9-57 years). Sixteen patients had an open physis at the time of trauma. There were 3

We present a summary of a prospective study of 50 consecutive cases into the morbidity associated with open reduction and internal fixation of the fractured mandibular condyle through the transparotid approach. It is acceptably safe, and the data can now be presented to patients to help them make an informed choice about options for treatment.

Forty-two intra-articular calcaneus fractures underwent open reduction and internal fixation with a low profile, titanium plate with a shape similar to the lateral aspect of the calcaneus. All 42 fractures healed without complication. There were no cases of hardware breakage. None of the patients were noted to have a loss of reduction. The plates were applied without bending and molded to the side of the calcaneus with tightening of the screws. No patient complained of symptomatic hardware during the follow-up period. With postoperative plain radiographs, the reduction was judged as anatomic i

A fracture of the posterior process of the talus is rare. In this report, we present a case of isolated displaced fracture of the posterior process of the talus, which was treated by early open reduction and internal fixation through a posteromedial approach. The fracture healed without evidence of avascular necrosis of either the posterior fragment or the talar body. The purpose of this article is to highlight the importance of early postoperative management of this uncommon type of fracture.

Six cases of fracture of the mandibular condyloid process in which there was osteosynthesis using the Kirschner pin were followed radiographically for more than 1 year. Tracings were made to analyze the remodeling process. The clinical course of all patients was satisfactory, without functional disturbance or asymmetries of the mandible.

The results in sixteen patients who had a displaced, comminuted intra-articular fracture of the distal end of the radius and who were treated by open reduction and internal fixation were retrospectively reviewed. At a mean follow-up of 4.8 years, 81 per cent of the patients had a rating of good or excellent by the scoring system of Gartland and Werley, but only 56 per cent had such a rating when the modified scoring system of Green and O'Brien was used. All of the fractures healed at an average of nine weeks. A step-off of two millimeters or more in the distal radial articular surface at the t

OBJECTIVE: Identification and treatment of intra-articular injuries, stabilization of the syndesmotic complex by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of the posterior malleolus (PM).
INDICATIONS: Bimalleolar and trimalleolar fractures, patients with functional demands.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Soft tissue injuries/infections in the area of the surgical approach, higher grade circulatory disorders, diabetes mellitus.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: The video exemplarily depicts the arthroscopically assisted treatment (AORIF) of a trimalleolar fracture and ORIF of the PM via the dorsolateral approach. P

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to investigate whether the outcomes of Mason type III radial head fractures (RHFs) treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) were comparable to those of Mason type II RHFs treated by ORIF.
METHODS: A total of 87 surgically treated RHF patients were reviewed. Their fractures were Mason type II in 39 patients (all treated by ORIF) and Mason type III in 48 patients (40 treated by ORIF, 7 by radial head arthroplasty, and 1 by resection). Although ORIF was preferred for Mason type III RHFs in our series, an arthroplasty was performed when the f
