Oral Candida in Orthodontic Patients Wearing Removable Orthodontic Appliances: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of removable orthodontic appliances (ROA) on oral Candida colonization using a systematic review approach. METHODS: We searched for human studies published from inception to April 29, 2024, in PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane central, and the VHL regional portal. Studies on oral Candida colonization in ROA wearers with acrylic components covering the oral mucosa, involving participants aged between 6 and 40 years, were considered eligible. Data on oral Candida colonization categorized by treatment period-before, during, and after ROA use- were the outcomes of intere

Occlusal interferences in orthodontic patients before and after treatment, and in subjects with minor orthodontic treatment need.

Different opinions have been expressed concerning the effect of orthodontic treatment on mandibular function. One factor discussed is occlusal interferences. The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence of occlusal interferences in 210 orthodontic patients before (mean age 12 years 8 months) and after (mean age 16 years 10 months) treatment and to compare them with subjects with minor orthodontic treatment need. The results showed a decrease in retruded contact position/intercuspal position (RCP/ICP) interferences in all morphological deviations, age, and gender groups. The prevalence

Prevalence of Oral Pathogen Slackia exigua among Clinical Orthodontic and Non-Orthodontic Saliva Samples.

Slackia exigua (SE) is a recently identified intestinal microbe, which recent oral surveys suggest may be associated with oral diseases including caries and periodontal disease. Based upon the lack of information regarding this organism, the primary objective of this study was to determine the oral prevalence of this microbe and any potential associations with patient characteristics such as age, sex, or the presence of orthodontic appliances. This retrospective study involved the screening of an existing saliva repository composed of previously collected unstimulated clinical saliva samples.

A new approach to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement in women: Orthodontic force application after ovulation.

Tooth movement occurs as a consequence of periodontal tissue remodeling. The goal of every orthodontist is to investigate better approaches to accelerate tooth movement. Estrogen, by binding with its receptors in periodontal tissue, regulates the remodeling of alveolar bones, promotes bone formation, and inhibits bone resorption. Estrogen secretion in vivo is characterized by a nearly lunar rhythm. The estrogen expression level is low during menstruation and the luteal phase, and reaches the highest at 1-2days before ovulation. Estrogen physiological fluctuations can cause physiological fluctu

An orthodontic and cephalometric study on the results of the combined surgical-orthodontic approach of the protruded premaxilla in bilateral clefts.

The anatomical aberration of the premaxilla in bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) gives rise to many problems. Orthodontic and orthopaedic treatment alone often fail to correct this deformity. In this study, the results of a combined surgical-orthodontic approach were analysed. 22 BCLP-patients, who had undergone an osteotomy of the premaxilla in combination with secondary or tertiary bone grafting, were involved in this study. Two cephalograms were analysed from each patient, one prior to and one after osteotomy. Dental casts were made prior to orthodontic treatment, prior and after osteot

Immersive Virtual Reality for Patient Education in Orthodontics: Cross-Sectional Feasibility and Acceptability Study.

BACKGROUND: Patient education is central to orthodontic care; however, most patients still learn about their malocclusion from conventional records, such as 2D image records. Immersive virtual reality (VR) allows patients to view and manipulate 3D dental models in a head-tracked environment, as part of the serious-games and extended reality family for health education. Evidence on patient-facing immersive VR in orthodontics remains limited, as most dental VR work has addressed student training rather than patient education. OBJECTIVE: This feasibility study aimed to evaluate acceptance, perce…

[Bacteremia and orthodontics: Management of patients with and without risk factors for infective endocarditis].

INTRODUCTION: Cases of focal oral bacterial infections - including infective endocarditis - have been reported during orthodontic treatment in patients with no previous medical history. This raises the question of whether orthodontic treatment is responsible for the development of these infections. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this narrative literature review was to determine whether or not bacteremia, directly or indirectly related to orthodontic treatment, is present and what precautions should be taken in orthodontic treatment of patients with and without risk of infective endocarditis. Innovations in Orthodontics: Skeletal Versus Dentoalveolar Expansion Utilizing Clear Aligners and TAD-Assisted Expanders.

Hypoplastic maxilla is a common skeletal anomaly that compromises function and esthetics. Beyond just a narrow-appearing smile, this abnormality presents significant restorative challenges in adult patients as it is often associated with crowding, compromised axial inclination of the teeth, lack of alveolar bone support, root proximity, and occlusal trauma.1 Recent research also confirms association of maxillary deficiency with nasal stenosis and a predisposition to compromised nasal airflow and pharyngeal collapse during sleep.2,3 Maxillary transverse skeletal deficiency is often but not alwa
