PURPOSE: Biodegradable polymer fixators have been used widely in oral and maxillofacial surgery for fracture management. However, short-comings such as insufficient mechanical strength, inappropriate degradation time, lack of radiolucency, and foreign body reactions during bone remodeling remain.

PURPOSE: To assess the one-year outcome of a dynamic hip screw (DHS) blade in the treatment of AO/OTA 31-A1 and 31-A2 intertrochanteric hip fractures.

STUDY DESIGN: Established lumbar fixation methods were assessed biomechanically, and a comparison was made with a new stand-alone anterior lumbar interbody cage device incorporating integrated anterior fixation.

Cylindrical biodegradable rods of self-reinforced polyglycolide were constructed for internal fixation of fractures in cancellous bone. The self-reinforced texture was achieved by embedding polyglycolide fibres in a polyglycolide matrix. In a prospective clinical study, 62 patients with displaced bimalleolar fractures were managed by open reduction and internal fixation using these rods. External skeletal fixation played a central role in the reconstruction of 30 limbs involved in posttraumatic osteomyelitis. The tibia was involved in 15, the femur in six, the ankle in five, and the foot and radius in two each. Of the thirty limbs, 27 were ununited. Positive bacteriology and/or histology was found in each case. A total of 36 frames were used with 20 unilateral half-frame constructs and 16 bilateral transfixion frames. The average duration of external fixation was 60 days. Specific procedures for soft tissue coverage were required in 21 cases and autogenous bone grafting in 26.

We reexamined 21 patients with congenital pseudarthrosis of the leg (congenital pseudoarthrosis of the tibia; CPT) associated with neurofibromatosis-1 (NF-1), > or =2 years after the termination of treatment, for a statistical study of the results obtained by using Ilizarov's external fixator. Difficulties with the dorsal approach discourage surgeons from internally fixing the most common fracture types. Two similar groups of patients with unstable fractures and fracture dislocations of the thoracic or lumbar spine have been treated with the posterior application of Williams plates or Harrington distraction rods over a period of 10 years.
