Clinical manifestations of subacute osteomyelitis may lead to delayed diagnosis. Acetabular subacute osteomyelitis is an uncommon disease. Bone tumors are usually suggested first. Diagnosis is often made based on radiological findings. We report on the case of a 9-year-old girl who consulted at the emergency department because of limping and pain in her left limb lasting 2 weeks. No fever was reported. Physical examination found a clear, painful reduction in hip mobility. X-ray findings revealed a posterior loss of bone in the acetabular wall. MRI found a mild invasion of the periarticular hip…

Children are susceptible to various injuries, including insect bites, and scorpion bites are common in the lower extremity of children in Middle East countries. In most cases, the sting will produce just a local reaction; however, serious complications that can result in death have occurred. In this case report, we describe a case of osteomyelitis of the calcaneum after a scorpion sting.

Osteopetrosis (OP) is a rare genetic metabolic bone disorder characterized by osteoclast dysfunction impairing bone resorption. Together with normal osteoblastic activity this dysfunction promotes intense bone sclerosis with reduction of marrow spaces as well as bone turnover. Maxillofacial complications are common after tooth extraction. Osteomyelitis (OM) of the mandible occurs in around 10% of the cases with OP. The purpose of this paper is to report the fi rst case of OP treated with dental implants, and to describe the protocol used to treat OM that developed after failure of one implant.…

Scrofuloderma is a common type of cutaneous tuberculosis usually manifests over an infected lymphnode, bone or joint that breaks down to form an undermined ulcer leading to discharging sinuses. We present a case of a 22 year old woman with diffuse swelling of right arm with overlying nodulo ulcerative skin lesions associated with seropurulent discharge. Routine investigations were normal and X-Ray of the right humerus showed the features of chronic osteomyelitis. Smears of the discharge for bacteria, fungi and acid fast bacilli were negative, but culture of skin biopsy showed Mycobacterium tub…

Osteopetrosis is a rare congenital (autosomal type) disorder of the skeletal system. Several variants have been described in the literature with grossly variant prognosis and clinical behaviour. Several reports of intractable osteomyelitis of the jaw bones secondary to osteopetrosis, particularly the mandible, have been published widely. However, there is no published report of the complete mandible sequestrating de novo, in the literature. An overview of this spectrum of sclerotic bone disease, its presentation in the oro-facial region, the diagnostic challenge it poses and the management dil…

INTRODUCTION: Septic arthritis and osteomyelitis can both independently cause substantial morbidity. With concomitant septic arthritis and osteomyelitis, the septic arthritis may be treated without knowledge of the adjacent osteomyelitis resulting in delayed treatment. This study aims to identify factors that may help to diagnosis concurrent infections (CI) earlier.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 200 patients with septic arthritis was performed. Patients with CI were compared with patients with septic arthritis alone using tests determined by the nature of the variable being analyze…

A 51-year-old man with a history of stage IV angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma was diagnosed with osteomyelitis of the patella. Legionella anisa was identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and culture. The patient had pneumonia 2 months prior to this osteomyelitis episode. L. anisa was retrospectively detected in his lung tissue by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and was considered the source of the L. anisa that caused his patella osteomyelitis.

Burkoholderia pseudomallei is an emerging cause of localized musculoskeletal infections. We report the case of a 9-month-old infant with isolated primary chronic osteomyelitis of the fifth metatarsal. Radiographs showed expansion and thickening of the cortex. The metatarsal had lytic lesions with scalloped margins; no periosteal reaction or sequestration was seen. Surgical debridement provided removal of infected material and adequate drainage by saucerization. B. pseudomallei was isolated from purulent material, and histologic examination revealed granulomatous inflammation. The child respond…

Tubercular osteomyelitis of midfacial bones is extremely rare, although tuberculosis of long bones and the vertebral column is not uncommon. Because of the rare incidence, myriad presentation, and lack of specific symptoms, this condition presents a challenge in diagnosis and calls for acute clinical awareness. This article presents a case report of a 12-year-old girl with complaints of gradually increasing swelling lateral to and below her right eye for 4 months with pus discharge. She was treated with surgical curettage and 4-drug antitubercular therapy and responded with complete remission …

BACKGROUND: Actinomycotic osteomyelitis is an infection in soft tissues and/or bones, being associated with trauma or a previous nonspecific infection. This article presents an unusual case of mandibular osteomyelitis caused by Actinomyces.
CASE REPORT: A 19-year-old male patient was referred for endodontic treatment of the lower right first molar about 16 months ago and removal of lower right third molar approximately 3 years before. The panoramic radiography showed change in bone density in the region of ill-defined mandibular angle boundaries, and the computed tomography (CT) showed mixed …

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The present study reviews our experience of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis in 450 children over a period of 20 years from 1985 to 2004 at the Nouméa Territorial Hospital in New Caledonia. The objective was to formulate a new theory of the pathogenesis of this affection and to report our research on the disparity in the pathology between temperate countries and our own tropical Pacific area.
PATIENT AND METHODS: Only children with an initially normal X-ray and showing symptoms for less than one week were included in the study. Subacute osteomyelitis, infant osteoarthrit…

Osteomyelitis of the maxillofacial skeleton is a rare condition in recent times. The combination of antibiotic therapy and surgical debridement is effective in the treatment of chronic suppurative osteomyelitis (CSO). This case report describes the successful surgical treatment of CSO of the mandible in an 18-year-old adult. Treatment included a pre-surgical course of antibiotics followed by sequestrectomy, resection of the coronoid process and removal of the pathologically fractured condylar process of the left side of the mandible. On post-operative clinical review at 1 week, the extra oral …

Mycobacterium marinum can uncommonly cause osteomyelitis of small bones of extremities. The reported cases in literature are reviewed. We report a rare case of long bone osteomyelitis which as far as we are aware, has never been described before. Even though this organism normally causes infection in the superficial cooler regions of the body, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of long bone osteomyelitis in patients with a history of immune compromise and the appropriate treatment strategy in such cases.

Primary tuberculotic osteomyelitis (TBOM) of the rib is rare. We report our experience of seven patients presenting with primary TBOM of rib. Over a period of eight years, otherwise healthy patients presenting with discharging sinus on the chest wall were managed. Patients included four males and three females, aged between 4 and 18 years. Following history and examination, radiological and histological investigations were performed. After confirming osteomyelitis of rib, excision of the sinus tract along with subperiosteal resection of the affected part of the rib was done. Tuberculosis was c…

A six-year-old female Labrador retriever dog was suffering from osteomyelitis in her hindlimb. A puncture wound caused by a rotted bamboo stick was presumed as the source of infection. The dog suffered from pre-existing aortic stenosis, but otherwise exhibited no significant abnormality in her systemic conditions excluding claudication of the left hindlimb. The results of cytology and pathological examinations of biopsy samples revealed the diagnosis of mycotic osteomyelitis in this dog. Mycological and DNA tests showed the pathogen as the mushroom Schizophyllum commune. Antibiotic sensitivity…
