PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to perform a retrospective cohort analysis, in which we measured the association of an acute pain service (APS)-driven multimodal analgesia protocol that included preoperative intrathecal morphine (ITM) compared to historic controls (i.e., surgeon-driven analgesia protocol without ITM) with postoperative opioid use.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study in which the primary objective was to determine whether there was a decrease in median 24-h opioid consumption (intravenous morphine equivalents [MEQ]) among robotic nephrectomy patients whose

BACKGROUND: There is inconsistent evidence suggesting that people with chronic low back pain may differ in variability of repeated trunk movements compared to people without chronic low back pain. These inconsistencies may be due to low reliability and task dependence of movement variability measures, which can be addressed using multiple movement tasks and summary measures.
METHODS: Participants with and without chronic low back pain were recruited. Measurement sessions involved 30 repetitions of movements in the sagittal, transverse, and combined planes. Kinematics of the pelvis, thorax, an

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at devising an objective method for quantifying pain in the low back region using pressure pain threshold (PPT) and demographic factors as predictive variables.
METHODS: The research was conducted in two phases. Phase I was a longitudinal exploratory study conducted on 49 men aged 18-50 years with chronic low back pain (CLBP) recruited using non-probability purposive sampling. We used Visual Analogue Scale to record pain intensity and pain affect, and Disability Rating Index to record associated disability. PPT was measured on 12 different locations on the lower b

BACKGROUND: Neurostimulation is a highly effective therapy for the treatment of chronic Intractable pain, however, due to the complexity of pain, measuring a subject's long-term response to the therapy remains difficult. Frequent measurement of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) to reflect multiple aspects of subjects' pain is a crucial step in determining therapy outcomes. However, collecting full-length PROs is burdensome for both patients and clinicians. The objective of this work is to identify the reduced set of questions from multiple validated PROs that can accurately characterize chronic

BACKGROUND: Tuina has gained widespread attention and utilization for the management of chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNLBP). However, evidence-based guidance for choosing accurate and appropriate outcome measures of Tuina is lacking. The objective of this study is to systematically synthesize the existing outcome measures reported in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating Tuina therapy in CNLBP.
METHODS: Electronic literature searches were conducted in multiple English and Chinese databases from their inception to May 2022. RCTs were included if they involved clinical outcome me

BACKGROUND: Detrimental associations of sedentary behaviour (time spent sitting) with musculoskeletal pain (MSP) conditions have been observed. However, findings on those with, or at risk of, type 2 diabetes (T2D) have not been reported. We examined the linear and non-linear associations of device-measured daily sitting time with MSP outcomes according to glucose metabolism status (GMS).
METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 2827 participants aged 40-75 years in the Maastricht Study (1728 with normal glucose metabolism (NGM); 441 with prediabetes; 658 with T2D), for whom valid data were availabl

BACKGROUND: Sustainable management for non-specific low back pain relies on adherence. This requires effective strategies to facilitate but also tools to measure adherence to physiotherapy.
OBJECTIVE: This two-stage systematic review aims to identify (1) tools to measure non-specific back pain patients' adherence to physiotherapy and (2) the most effective strategy to facilitate patients' adherence to physiotherapy.
METHOD: PubMed, Cochrane, PEDro, and Web of Science were searched for English language studies measuring adherence in adults with low back pain. Following PRISMA recommendations,

BACKGROUND: Interdisciplinary pain management programmes, based on cognitive-behavioural principles, aim to improve physical and psychological functioning and enhance self-management in people living with chronic pain. Currently there is insufficient evidence about whether psychological, biological or social factors are predictive of positive outcomes following pain rehabilitation. This study aims to evaluate predictors of change in Brief Pain Inventory - pain interference score (BPI) in a clinical data set to determine whether age, sex and baseline outcome measures are predictive of improveme

The Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) is a patient-reported outcome measure that is available in several languages. We aim to assess the structural and construct validity of the FAAM with an emphasis on pain and functionality after foot surgery. The activities of daily living (ADL) and Sports subscales of the Finnish version of the FAAM were completed by 182 patients who underwent operative treatment for disorders of the foot. Convergent validity was assessed by principal component analysis using Spearman's correlation coefficient between the FAAM subscales and the principal components (Fu

OBJECTIVE: Psychological pain lies at the heart of human experience. However, it may also be abnormally intense and/or prolonged in pathological states, with negative outcomes. A simple and reliable measure of psychological pain for clinical use would be useful. In this study, we present a preliminary validation of a simple visual analog scale jointly measuring psychological and physical pain.
METHODS: Two samples of adult (non elderly) depressed patients and healthy controls were independently recruited in two locations in Canada and the USA (N = 46/48 and 200/20, respectively). Six dimensio

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI) is a valid and reliable patient-reported instrument designed to identify patients whose presenting symptoms may be related to central sensitization (CS). Part A of the CSI measures a full array of 25 somatic and emotional symptoms associated with CS, and Part B asks if patients have previously been diagnosed with one or more specific central sensitivity syndromes (CSSs) and related disorders. The CSI has previously been validated in a group of patients with chronic pain who were screened by a trained psychiatrist for specific CSS di

BACKGROUND: The 100 mm visual analog scale (VAS) score is widely used to measure pain intensity after surgery. Despite this widespread use, it is unclear what constitutes the minimal clinically important difference (MCID); that is, what minimal change in score would indicate a meaningful change in a patient's pain status.
METHODS: We enrolled a sequential, unselected cohort of patients recovering from surgery and used a VAS to quantify pain intensity. We compared changes in the VAS with a global rating-of-change questionnaire using an anchor-based method and three distribution-based methods (

Background/Objectives: Chronic low back pain (LBP) is a multifactorial condition in which biological, psychological, and physical factors are associated with pain persistence and reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Although central sensitization, pain catastrophizing, functional disability, and body composition have each been associated with CLBP, their relative contributions to HRQoL remain incompletely understood. This study investigated the relationships among these factors and identified factors associated with physical and mental HRQoL in multivariable analyses. Methods: In th
