Maternal and late mortality trends, emphasizing the H1N1 and COVID-19 pandemics, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 2009 to 2021.

OBJECTIVE: Trends in maternal mortality (MMR) and late maternal mortality ratios (LMMR) were estimated, in periods with and without H1N1 and COVID-19 pandemics, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 2009 to 2021. METHODS: Ecological study of temporal trends. Data was obtained from the Mortality and Live Birth Information Systems. The annual MMR and LMMR per 100,000 live births (LB) were calculated and the trends were estimated using the joinpoint regression model. RESULTS: In 2009, the MMR was 103.1, reaching 152.4/100,000 LB in 2021, with an annual reduction of 3.3% (95% confidence interval - 95%…

Understanding the impact of pandemics on long-term medication adherence: directly observed therapy in a tuberculosis treatment cohort pre- and post-COVID-19 lockdowns.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted tuberculosis (TB) treatment services, including directly observed therapy (DOT) programs used to promote medication adherence. We compared DOT adherence embedded in a research study before and after COVID-19 lockdowns in South Africa. METHODS: We analyzed data from 263 observational study participants undergoing drug susceptible (DS)-TB DOT between May 2017 to March 2022. Participants enrolled before October 2019 were considered 'pre-COVID-19' and those enrolled after September 2020 were considered 'post-COVID-19 lockdown groups. Negative

Electrostatic Surface Potential as a Key Parameter in Virus Transmission and Evolution: How to Manage Future Virus Pandemics in the Post-COVID-19 Era.

Virus-cell interactions involve fundamental parameters that need to be considered in strategies implemented to control viral outbreaks. Among these, the surface electrostatic potential can give valuable information to deal with new epidemics. In this article, we describe the role of this key parameter in the hemagglutination of red blood cells and in the co-evolution of synaptic receptors and neurotransmitters. We then establish the functional link between lipid rafts and the electrostatic potential of viruses, with special emphasis on gangliosides, which are sialic-acid-containing, electroneg

Relative contributions of pre-pandemic factors and intra-pandemic activities to differential COVID-19 risk among migrant and non-migrant populations in the Netherlands: lessons for future pandemic preparedness.

BACKGROUND: Although risk factors for differences in SARS-CoV-2 infections between migrant and non-migrant populations in high income countries have been identified, their relative contributions to these SARS-CoV-2 infections, which could aid in the preparation for future viral pandemics, remain unknown. We investigated the relative contributions of pre-pandemic factors and intra-pandemic activities to differential SARS-CoV-2 infections in the Netherlands by migration background (Dutch, African Surinamese, South-Asian Surinamese, Ghanaians, Turkish, and Moroccan origin). METHODS: We utilized …

Reconstruction of the 1918 pandemic influenza virus: how revealing the molecular secrets of the virus responsible for the worst pandemic in recorded history can guide our response to future influenza pandemics.

There is an ever-present threat that a pandemic will result from the emergence of a new influenza strain to which humans have little immunity. In 1957 and 1968, new influenza viruses emerged into the human population and spread globally. Those pandemics were associated with high rates of illness and mortality, but both paled in comparison with the influenza pandemic of 1918. Reconstruction of the 1918 pandemic virus and studies to elucidate the exceptional virulence of the virus will be important steps toward understanding virulent influenza strains. One approach has been to reconstruct recomb…

Clinical Nursing in Times of War and a Pandemic.

Nurses who served in the Vietnam War and those who cared for patients during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic surge may be separated by decades, but they share the experience of caring for large numbers of critically injured, ill, or dying patients while risking their own lives. This article reviews the findings of two studies, one conducted in 1986 based on interviews with Vietnam War nurses, and one conducted in 2020 based on interviews with nurses during COVID-19, and explores the idea that professional nurses from different generations have similar thoughts when their lives are in danger and pat

Death, inequality, and the pandemic in the nation's capital.

BACKGROUND: Abrupt changes in mortality rates and life expectancy provide critical insights into how crises like COVID-19 exacerbate health inequalities across demographic groups. Washington, DC, a city marked by substantial socioeconomic and racial diversity, is a valuable case study to examine the pandemic's impact. Data on all-cause mortality, cause-specific mortality, and life expectancy highlight how pre-existing disparities have widened across sociodemographic groups relative to pre-pandemic levels. METHODS: We analyzed death certificates from 2015 to 2021 obtained from the DC Departmen

COVID-19 pandemic and thyroid diseases.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with various autoimmune manifestations. Several studies have suggested a potential association between COVID-19 and thyroid diseases (TDs); however, findings remain inconclusive and are primarily based on relatively small studies. Population-level data examining the differential impact of the pandemic on specific thyroid conditions are scarce. OBJECTIVE: To examine the incidence patterns of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (HT), Graves' Disease (GD), and Subacute Thyroiditis (SAT) during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic period. M

Pandemic security needs national leadership.

In a world facing escalating risks from conflict, climate change, and emerging infectious diseases, health systems are the first line of defense for protecting people, economies, and stability. Although pandemic preparedness is often framed as a global endeavor, readiness can only be successfully realized through strong national approaches that work alongside global strategies. The tools and networks already exist to help countries achieve this. What remains is the sustained commitment of governments to finance and implement those tools.

AVIAN INFLUENZA VIRUS: THE NEXT PANDEMIC?

Novel avian influenza viruses continue to circulate in animal species around the world and show a propensity to reassort and acquire virulence factors, which raises the concern that these viruses may adapt to humans. Pandemic preparedness has relied heavily on vaccine stockpiles. However, avian influenza strains genetically drift over time, and stockpiled vaccines often fail to elicit protective immunity for these genetic variants. Various strategies can help overcome immune imprinting and immunological hyporeactivity as well as broaden the immune response to variant viruses. Adjuvants remain

Mammalian Antigen Display for Pandemic Countermeasures.

Pandemic countermeasures require the rapid design of antigens for vaccines, profiling patient antibody responses, assessing antigen structure-function landscapes, and the surveillance of emerging viral lineages. Cell surface display of a viral antigen or its subdomains can facilitate these goals by coupling the phenotypes of protein variants to their DNA sequence. Screening surface-displayed proteins via flow cytometry also eliminates time-consuming protein purification steps. Prior approaches have primarily relied on yeast as a display chassis. However, yeast often cannot express large viral

Nipah: The looming post-covid pandemic.

First identified as a pathogen in Malaysia and Singapore in 1999, Nipah virus (NiV) caused nearly 300 human cases and over 100 fatalities. It also killed about 1 million pigs. Three years later (2002), it was reported in Pteropus bats in Malaysia, in Cambodia & Thailand, (2005), and as far as Madagascar (2007) and Ghana (2008). India (Kerala) reported its first human NiV-caused fatalities in September 2023. Taken together, these trends emphasize its public health threat. In humans, NiV infection initially leads to fever, headache, body aches and muscle pain, nausea and vomiting. The symptoms r
