The extent of eosinophils in skin biopsy and peripheral blood specimens of patients with lupus panniculitis and morphea profunda was determined by studying 37 biopsies from 33 patients with lupus panniculitis and 55 biopsies from 53 patients with morphea profunda. Specimens from 8 (24%) of 33 patients with lupus panniculitis showed eosinophils, and 13 (25%) of 53 patients with morphea profunda had eosinophils in the subcutaneous tissue. We report a case of malignant histiocytosis which began with the skin lesions of panniculitis. A 32-year-old woman presented with recurrent erythematous plaques, subcutaneous nodules, and ulcers on the trunk and the extremities and intermittent fever for 7 months. Two patients with benign cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis are presented and compared with the one benign and ten fatal cases previously reported. Benign-appearing histiocytes which engulf blood cells, nuclear debris, and platelets are the most characteristic feature of the disease. This cytophagia tends to be massive in the subcutaneous tissue and involves extracutaneous organs only in the fatal cases. The course is chronic in the benign form. A 22-year-old woman presented with fever, chills, photophobia, and headaches, followed by a centrally clearing erythematous skin eruption, migratory polyarthralgias, conjunctivitis, and subsequently, tender, nodular skin lesions. Antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi were consistent with acute Lyme disease. Skin biopsy revealed acute septal panniculitis. This dermatologic manifestation has not been previously described in Lyme disease.

A four month old female toy Poodle showing multiple nodules 2 to 3 cm in diameter, some of which had ruptured over the neck and trunk area, was diagnosed as having nodular panniculitis. The animal had been treated with a course of chloramphenicol and ampicillin for one month with no response. The diagnosis was based on history, clinical signs, laboratory data and dramatic response to the addition of corticosteroid to the antibiotic therapy.

A case of unilateral panniculitis with fat necrosis of subcutaneous scrotal fat tissue is reported. The typical presentation is that of unilateral or bilateral swelling, pain and a palpably tender mass in the scrotum located beneath the testicle. Conservative, non-operative treatment is successful.

Dark red nodules that drained an opaque amber liquid developed on the extensor surfaces of both legs in a 69-year-old woman receiving furosemide and spironolactone for congestive heart failure. In addition to asymptomatic cholelithiasis, the serum amylase, lipase, and uric acid levels were elevated. Other skin signs and joint manifestations of gout were absent. A biopsy revealed a granuloma with the needle-like crystals characteristic of gout.
