BACKGROUND: Salivary gland neoplasms are a heterogeneous group of tumours with relatively low global incidence. The incidence of this neoplasm is poorly documented in the African population, and the pattern may differ from the rest of the world. This study aimed to determine the incidence and clinicopathological features of salivary gland neoplasms in an African population. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of histopathologically confirmed salivary gland neoplasms diagnosed at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Nigeria, between January 2003 and December 2021. Data was obtaine

Myoepithelial carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma is defined as a malignant epithelial neoplasm arising from a primary or recurrent benign pleomorphic adenoma. This type of tumor comprises 3.6% of all salivary gland tumors and 12% of malignant ones. Clinically, it most commonly presents as a firm mass in the parotid gland. The development of this neoplasm in the sinonasal and nasopharyngeal regions is extremely rare and only few cases are reported in the literature. The prognosis of myoepithelial carcinoma is variable. Marked cellular pleomorphism, high mitotic rate, and high proliferative activi

BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA), the most prevalent benign neoplasm of the parotid gland, typically manifests as a slow-growing, painless mass. In cases where treatment is substantially delayed, the tumor may undergo progressive enlargement, potentially resulting in significant facial deformity. This, in turn, can complicate surgical management.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old female patient exhibited a long-standing right parotid mass that had been gradually increasing in size since 2007, with a notable escalation in dimensions during the year prior to the preliminary assessment. Magne

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare low-grade malignant salivary gland neoplasm typically found in the parotid gland. This report describes a case of EMC that arose from the submandibular gland, and gives special emphasis to the preoperative diagnostic value of positron emission tomography (PET) in combination with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although a preoperative diagnostically specific image of EMC could not be established, the malignant nature of this tumor was detected by these combined examinations.

BACKGROUND/AIM: SMARCB1(INI1)-deficient cutaneous carcinomas are an emerging subset of rare tumors, with only a few cases reported, making its diagnosis challenging.
CASE REPORT: A 84-year-old male with a history of prostate adenocarcinoma and skin squamous cell cancer presented with a rapidly growing upper neck mass. Computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET)/CT scans were suspicious of a salivary gland neoplasm of the parotid glands. Needle core biopsy of the right parotid gland mass showed poorly differentiated carcinoma. The patient underwent bilateral superficial par

Pancreatic gastrointestinal stromal tumors (PGISTs) are exceptionally rare, accounting for <5% of extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumors (EGISTs) and <1% of malignant pancreatic neoplasms. We present a unique case of concurrent double primary malignancies in a 46-year-old female with a history of recurrent myoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland, managed through surgical resection and adjuvant therapy. She presented with an enlarging abdominal mass, initially suggestive of pancreatic metastasis. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed positive staining for smooth-muscle actin (SMA) and CD34

BACKGROUND: Although granulomas can occur in association with malignant neoplasms, including some subtypes of lymphoma, they have been described rarely in marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZCL). To our knowledge, the cytologic features of this association have not been documented. We present the cytologic findings with fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of an unusual case of MZCL with concomitant granulomas.
CASE: An 82-year-old male presented with a mass in the left parotid gland. The lesion was evaluated by FNAC. The smears showed syncytial aggregates of epithelioid histiocytes intermixed

For many decades, surgery has been the primary treatment for malignant submandibular gland neoplasms. Nonetheless, due to the heterogeneity and rarity of submandibular gland malignant tumors and the high frequency of chronic benign processes in this region, management can be complex. Preoperative investigations, such as fine-needle aspiration and imaging, are critical to achieve the correct diagnosis so that appropriate surgery can be planned. In general, for malignant submandibular gland neoplasms, the minimal treatment necessary is excision of the submandibular gland with level I lymph node

BACKGROUND: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm showing nerve sheath differentiation, usually arising in large nerves of the trunk and extremities. Primary location in the parotid gland is rare. We describe fine needle aspiration (FNA) findings in a case of MPNST in the parotid gland. Differential diagnostic problems encountered in interpretation are discussed.
CASE: A 39-year-old man underwent FNA of a well-circumscribed, painless, mobile mass of the parotid gland. Smears were cellular, with clusters of tightly packed spindle or oval cells arra

BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic adenomas are benign salivary gland tumors, which predominantly affect the superficial lobe of the parotid gland. The "pleomorphic" nature of the tumor can be explained on the basis of its epithelial and connective tissue origin. The tumor has a female predilection between 30-50 years of age. Slowly progressing asymptomatic swelling is the usual presentation of the tumor. Surgical excision of the tumor mass forms the mainstay of treatment, with utmost care taken to preserve the facial nerve.
CASE DETAILS: This case report aims to throw light on an interesting case of pl

Background and objective Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common major salivary gland neoplasm. Around 80% of them arise in the parotid glands, whereas 10% originate in the minor salivary glands. The pleomorphic adenoma of the extra-parotid site is defined by its location outside the primary salivary gland. The minor salivary gland adenomas occur at the hard and soft palate, lips, tongue, lacrimal glands, pharynx, larynx, paranasal sinus, and nasal cavity. Pleomorphic adenoma in parapharyngeal space may occur de novo or as an extension of the deep lobe of the parotid tumors. Our objective in th

Aim Salivary gland neoplasms represent a rare subset of head and neck neoplasms. Due to their varied histological and biological behaviours, they pose a challenge for both surgeons and histopathologists. The study aimed to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with salivary gland neoplasms at our centre, assess their anatomical distribution and histopathological patterns, and evaluate the concordance of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) with histopathology. The study also documented surgical management approaches, short-term postoperative outcomes, including pr

Neoplasm of salivary glands constitutes about 3% of all tumours of head and neck. Within the category we can differentiate tumours of a very different histological structure. What lies behind such great differences in the changes within the salivary glands is complex embryogenesis of the glands. About 80% of all tumours of salivary glands is located in parotid gland, from 10 to 20% - in submandibular gland and several percent in sublingual and small salivary gland. This work aims at the assessment of the frequency of occurrence of non-malignant neoplasm in parotid and submandibular gland based

Surgical removal is the treatment of choice for many neoplasms of the parotid gland. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the differences between parotidectomy using a modified facelift incision (MFI) and parotidectomy using a modified Blair incision (MBI). A systematic search of the available literature in PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library was performed. Studies of adult patients who underwent open parotidectomy with presumed benign parotid neoplasms based on preoperative examinations were reviewed. The surgical outcomes of the MFI and MBI groups were collected. Intraoperative and posto…

BACKGROUND: Recent studies of the molecular biology of cancer have demonstrated that p53 tumor suppressor gene aberration is associated with the development and progression of several different cancer types.
METHODS: To analyze the expression of the p53 oncoprotein in parotid gland neoplasms, 72 parotid gland tumors (including 46 malignant and 26 benign cases) were studied immunocytochemically using the murine monoclonal DO-7 anti-p53 antibody. In parotid gland cancers, no and low expression (-/+) or moderate and high expression (++/+++) of the p53 oncoprotein were examined for correlation wi

Salivary sialadenoma papilliferum (SP), an infrequent benign salivary gland neoplasm, resembles an uncommon benign tumor of sweat gland origin called syringocystadenoma papilliferum. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of SP of a minor salivary gland, near the parotid gland orifice, in an adult female patient presenting as intraoral growth and extraoral swelling. The present case highlights the SP's clinical and microscopic features, considering other exophytic papilliferous oral lesions and understanding the need to explore the nature and malignant potential of the tumor.

Warthin's tumor is the second most common benign neoplasm of the parotid. Most of cases are represented by a single localization, while only a small percentage of patients presents bilateral lesions or unilateral multifocal pattern. Warthin's tumor has an excellent prognosis due to the low rate of recurrence after surgical treatment. Malignant transformation occurs in less than 1% of cases. The aim of this article is to present two unusual cases of Warthin's tumor and an updated review of the latest scientific literature.
