Early Warning of Cucumber Angular Leaf Spot by Estimating Airborne Pathogen Aerosols with Particulate Matter Sensors.

Airborne bacterial diseases driven by pathogen aerosols in enclosed greenhouses spread rapidly, challenging traditional early-warning methods. This study developed a two-step monitoring system for cucumber angular leaf spot using low-cost particulate matter (PM) sensors, qPCR, and machine learning. Evaluated across spatially independent greenhouse trials using 732 plot-days of data, PM sensors were utilized as dynamic physical proxies alongside microclimate data. These proxies continuously estimated the fluctuations of pathogen aerosols suspended in the greenhouse air. When estimated aerosol r…

Long-Term Exposure to Fine Particulate Matter and Kidney Function among Patients with Polycystic Kidney Disease.

KEY POINTS: Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter was associated with faster decline in kidney function among patients with polycystic kidney disease. Associations were stronger in younger patients and those with preserved kidney function at baseline. The association was weaker among patients prescribed tolvaptan. BACKGROUND: Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is the fourth leading cause of ESKD. Although the condition is primarily genetic, environmental exposures such as air pollution may influence disease progression. METHODS: We investigated whether long-term exposure to fine particu…

The Human Microbiome in Airborne Particulate Matter-Associated Aging-Related Chronic Diseases: An Evidence-Stratified Review.

Airborne particulate matter (PM) exposure is increasingly recognized for its profound impact on human health. Emerging evidence highlights the human microbiome as a plausible intermediary between environmental exposures and host physiological responses. While current research largely focuses on PM's direct toxicological effects, the role of microbiome disruption in mediating aging-related chronic diseases remains underexplored. This review integrates epidemiological data, animal models, and multiomics approaches to examine the impact of PM exposure on microbial communities across the respirato…

Airborne Particulate Matter as an Emerging Driver of Gastric Carcinogenesis: Molecular Pathways Linking Inflammation and Cancer.

Gastric cancer (GC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with chronic inflammation playing a central role in its pathogenesis. While established risk factors such as Helicobacter pylori (Hp), diet, and lifestyle are well recognized, growing epidemiological evidence links airborne particulate matter (PM) exposure with increased GC incidence and mortality. However, the biological mechanisms underlying this association remain poorly understood. This review integrates epidemiological evidence associating elevated PM exposure with GC risk and summarizes current mechanistic…

Associations of Fine Particulate Matter Components With Acute Aortic Dissection: A Time-Stratified Case-Crossover Study.

BACKGROUND: Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is among the most life-threatening cardiovascular emergencies. Ambient exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been linked with AAD, particularly in urban areas. Yet the associations of key PM2.5 components with specific AAD subtypes remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: We used a time-stratified case-crossover design (2015-2023) in Hangzhou, China, investigating associations of major PM2.5 components with AAD and its Stanford subtypes. Conditional logistic regression and weighted quantile sum models were applied to explore associations o…

Long-term monitoring of particulate matter in an Asian community using research-grade low-cost sensors.

Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 µm or less (PM2.5) poses significant health risks, necessitating comprehensive exposure assessment. Long-term community monitoring can provide representative exposure levels for environmental epidemiological studies. This study deployed nine research-grade low-cost sensors (AS-LUNG-O) for 3.5 years of street-level PM2.5 monitoring in an Asian community, evaluating temporospatial variations, hotspots, and emission sources. The hourly mean PM2.5 concentrations from December 2017 to July 2021 were 24.3 ± 14.1 µg/m3. PM2.5 levels were typicall…

Water quality performance of vegetated compost blankets for highway stormwater management: Particulate matter and trace metals.

Urban stormwater pollution poses serious risks to human and environmental health, including trace metals toxicity. To improve the performance of existing highway Vegetated Filter Strips (VFS), which have limited performance for volume reduction and pollutant removal, amendment with a Vegetated Compost Blanket (VCB), a layer of seeded compost, has been proposed. A novel VCB/VFS system was assessed as a Stormwater Control Measure (SCM) via particulate matter and trace metals removal performance. Field and greenhouse studies of the VCB/VFS system were conducted and concentrations of total suspend…

Role of macrophage NLRP3 inflammasome activation in real-ambient particulate matter-induced abnormal hepatic glucose metabolism.

Evidence regarding the effects of particulate matter (PM) exposure on hepatic glucose metabolism and insulin resistance is limited, and its mechanisms remain unclear. Macrophages, as key regulators of the liver microenvironment, may mediate PM-induced metabolic processes. This study used an individually ventilated cage (IVC)-based real-ambient PM exposure system mouse model, co-cultured macrophages and hepatocytes, and NOD-like receptor protein 3 (Nlrp3)-knockdown model to investigate the impact of macrophages on hepatic insulin resistance (IR) and glucose metabolism under PM exposure. Our fin…

Artemisia gmelinii Extract Attenuates Particulate Matter-Induced Neutrophilic Inflammation in a Mouse Model of Lung Injury.

Particulate matter (PM) induces and augments oxidative stress and inflammation, leading to respiratory diseases. Although Artemisia gmelinii Weber ex Stechm has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, there are no reports on whether Artemisia gmelinii extract (AGE) regulates lung inflammation in a PM-induced model. Thus, we investigated the protective effects of AGE using a PM-induced mouse lung inflammation model. AGE significantly decreased the expression of inflammatory chemokines, neutrophil extracellular trap formation, and the total number of inflammatory cells in the bronchoalveolar …

Differential Effects of Urban Particulate Matter on BV2 Microglial-Like and C17.2 Neural Stem/Precursor Cells.

Air pollution affects the majority of the world's population and has been linked to over 7 million premature deaths per year. Exposure to particulate matter (PM) contained within air pollution is associated with cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological ill health. There is increasing evidence that exposure to air pollution in utero and in early childhood is associated with altered brain development. However, the underlying mechanisms for impaired brain development are not clear. While oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are documented consequences of PM exposure, cell-specific mechanis…

Does psychosocial stress modify the association of fine particulate matter and ozone with cardiovascular health indicators?

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) air pollution can cause abnormal changes in blood pressure (BP), blood glucose and lipids, which are important indicators for cardiovascular health. Psychosocial stress could be a potential effect modifier for adverse health effects of air pollution, but research evidence is scarce. A cross-sectional study with 373 elderly subjects was conducted in Beijing during 2018-2019. We collected psychosocial stress information on anxiety, perceived stress and depression, obtained daily environmental data, measured resting BP, blood glucose and lipids in st…
