Neonatal management of parvovirus B19-induced hydrops fetalis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hydrops fetalis (HF) is a severe fetal condition, and congenital Parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection is a leading cause of the non-immune form (NIHF). The recent European B19V outbreak has had a substantial impact on obstetric and neonatal outcomes, leading to an increase in fetal anemia, NIHF, spontaneous abortions, and intrauterine demise. While prenatal diagnosis and intrauterine interventions are well established, postnatal management of B19V-related NIHF remains challenging and outcomes are often poor. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a preterm newborn with B19V-associated NIHF follo…

[The 507th case: hemolytic anemia, parvovirus B19, and multiple organ dysfunction].

A 19-year-old male patient with high-risk acute B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia received haploidentical stem cell transplantation. He developed anemia repeatedly and parvovirus B19 nucleic acid was positive in blood plasma. The patient was diagnosed with cold agglutinin syndrome and multiple organ dysfunction including respiratory failure and hepatitis. In the conflict between viral infection and the treatment of cold agglutinin syndrome, we provided supportive treatment, complement inhibitors to control hemolysis, and antiviral therapy. After timely glucocorticoid and immunosuppressant therapy,…

Immunoinformatics for Novel Multi-Epitope Vaccine Development in Canine Parvovirus Infections.

Canine parvovirus (CPV-2) is one of the most important pathogens of dogs of all ages, causing pandemic infections that are characterized by fatal hemorrhagic enteritis. The CPV-2 vaccine is recommended as a core vaccine for pet animals. Despite the intensive practice of active immunization, CPV-2 remains a global threat. In this study, a multi-epitope vaccine against CPV-2 was designed, targeting the highly conserved capsid protein (VP2) via in silico approaches. Several immunoinformatics methods, such as epitope screening, molecular docking, and simulation were used to design a potential vacc…

Progress of research on human parvovirus B19 infection after renal transplantation.

Long-term immunosuppressant use in renal transplant recipients leads to dampened immune function and high susceptibility to opportunistic pathogens. Recently, the incidence of human parvovirus B19 (HPV-B19) infection after renal transplantation has increased, which may lead to pure red cell aplasia (PRCA), affect graft function, and lead to renal injury. After renal transplantation, the clinical manifestations of HPV-B19 infection are atypical, challenging the diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, we aimed to provide a comprehensive review of the existing literature to aid in the diagnosis and t…

Successful use of interferon alfa-2a for persistent parvovirus B19 infection.

Human infection with parvovirus B19 causes a range of clinical manifestations, including benign erythema infectiosum in children, arthralgias in adults, aplastic crisis in patients with bone marrow failure, and potentially fatal congenital hydrops fetalis. Persistent parvovirus B19 infection is a rare disease presentation mostly seen in adult women or immunocompromised individuals. Treatment options include corticosteroids and intravenous immunoglobulin; however, viral clearance is difficult to obtain and rarely maintained. In this Grand Round, we report the case of a 43-year-old man with pers…

[Review of correlation between human parvovirus B19 and autoimmune disease etiology].

Human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) is a small single strand DNA virus distributed throughout the world, with its encoded products being three known proteins. There is conclusive evidence that PVB19 infection is a crucial inducement of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), myasthenia gravis (MG) and other autoimmune diseases (AIDs). Recent studies have confirmed that anti-B19-VP1u-IgG antibody is able to increase the activity of cytokines such as interleukin 1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9); PVB19 prote…

Molecular evidence of goose-parvovirus-related abnormal molting in Pekin ducks.

Since January 2019, abnormal molting has been observed frequently in approximately 40-day-old Pekin ducks in China. To investigate the possible involvement of a virus, we tested the prevalence of duck circovirus (DuCV), goose hemorrhagic polyomavirus (GHPyV), and goose parvovirus (GPV) in 11 molt cases in two provinces. GPV was detected in all cases, particularly in all samples collected from the feather area. The complete genome sequences of three GPV strains were determined and found to have 52 nucleotide changes relative to GPVs associated with short beak and dwarfism syndrome of Pekin duck…

Parvovirus B19 infection presenting with neutropenia and thrombocytopenia: Three case reports.

RATIONALE: Parvovirus B19 (PV) infection is usually symptomless and can cause benign, short-lived conditions. Anemia associated with PRCA is the most representative hematologic manifestation, but neutropenia and thrombocytopenia have been rarely reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: Three patients were admitted to the hospital with neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. The accompanying symptoms were fever, myalgia, rash, or arthralgia, and all patients were previously healthy. DIAGNOSIS: Patients were positive for PV PCR and diagnosed with PV infection. Before the diagnosis of PV infection, 2 patients und…

No Definite Association between Human Parvovirus B19 Infection and Behçet Disease.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of the Behçet disease (BD) has remained obscured. There have been studies to show the association of BD to infections like herpes simplex, hepatitis, and parvovirus B19 however, the findings are rather controversial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We selected 55 patients with the best matched symptoms of BD and measured the loads of B19 DNA in their plasma by quantitative real time PCR and verified their seropositivity by ELISA. All findings were compared to the results from 42 healthy persons. RESULTS: Patients showed a wide spectrum of BD symptoms. Serologic studies showed…

Measles, mumps, rubella, and human parvovirus B19 infections and neurologic disease.

While the systemic disorders associated with measles, mumps, and rubella viruses and human parvovirus B19 tend to be mild, each virus can produce potentially life-threatening neurologic disease in human hosts, especially when these viruses infect young children. Two of the viruses, rubella and parvovirus B19, can be vertically transmitted to fetuses during maternal infection and cause congenital infection. Neurologic complications are common after intrauterine infection with the rubella virus, a condition known as the congenital rubella syndrome. Two, measles and rubella viruses, can induce "s…

Mast cells in Canine parvovirus-2-associated enteritis with crypt abscess.

The role of mast cells (MCs) in allergic reactions and parasitic infections is well established. Their involvement in host immune response against bacterial and viral infections is reported. In this study, investigation is made to determine if MCs are associated with Canine parvovirus-2 (CPV-2)-induced enteritis with crypt abscess (ECA). Mast cell count (MCC) was made on toluidine blue-stained intestinal sections from a total of 34 dogs. These included 16 dogs exhibiting ECA positive for CPV-2 and negative for Canine distemper virus and Canine coronavirus by immunohistochemistry and fluorescen…

Recombinant canine parvovirus-like particles express foreign epitopes in silkworm pupae.

The capsid structural protein VP2 of canine parvovirus (CPV) can self-assemble into highly organized virus-like particles (VLPs) and retain major immunoreactivity. In this study, different recombinant baculoviruses that expressed varying fusion proteins of the CPV VP2 protein with the T cell determinant and/or the linear virus-neutralizing epitope of rabies virus (RV) were generated. Infection with these baculoviruses changed BmN cell morphology and inhibited their proliferation as well as damaged silkworms and pupae. However, infection with these baculoviruses induced high levels of recombina…
