Novel therapies for glaucoma: a patent review (2013-2019).

Introduction: Glaucoma is one of the main leading causes of irreversible blindness in the world. The treatment of this disease relies on the use of drugs able to reduce/control the intraocular pressure (IOP), one of the main risk factors for glaucoma. Current therapies are based on the use of compounds belonging to well-established categories (prostaglandin analogs, β-adrenergic blockers, α-adrenergic agonists, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, Rho kinase inhibitors, and cholinergic agonists). However, even if they are effective in reducing IOP, important side effects impair patient compliance, a

Carbonic anhydrase inhibition and the management of glaucoma: a literature and patent review 2013-2019.

Introduction: Glaucoma affects more than 70 million people worldwide. One of the major therapeutic options for its management is based on the inhibition of the metalloenzyme carbonic anhydrases (CAs, EC 4.2.1.1). CA inhibitors (CAIs) diminish ocular hypertension in glaucomatous patients by reducing the rate of bicarbonate formation and thus, the secretion of the aqueous humor. Areas covered: This review is intended to cover the major contributions in terms of patent literature reports for the treatment of ophthalmic diseases by means of CAIs in a time frame spanning from 2013 to date. Thiazolidinedione compounds: a patent review (2010 - present).

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome, obesity and insulin resistance has become an epidemic. Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) affect glucose and lipid metabolism in insulin-sensitive tissues, which in turn reduces the lipid content in the liver by modulating several mediators. TZD as a hypoglycemic agent decrease blood sugar levels. Researchers have also made an attempt to design novel compounds having core structure of TZD with other heterocycles to explore them for anticancer and antimalarial properties. The present review provides an extended study of chemistry and inhibitory activit

Neurovascular complications of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS): from pathophysiology to recent treatment options.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a severe iatrogenic complication of ovulation induction, which has a very serious impact on the patient's health, as it is often associated with a high morbidity and mortality risk. Indeed, patients classified as having severe OHSS presented with liquid imbalance signs (such as rapid weight gain, tense ascites, respiratory difficulty and progressive oliguria), which are related to the fluid shift from the intravascular space to third space compartments subsequent to an increased capillary permeability. In this way, cardiovascular system findings incl

Recent patents of gene mutation relative to JAK/STAT pathway and their implication in myeloproliferative diseases.

The JAK/STAT pathway plays an important role in the regulation of proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic cells. The JAK family consists of four different JAK kinasesJAK1, JAK2, JAK3, and tyrosine kinase 2. Recent studies have found that JAK2V617F mutation is present in approximately 90-95% of patients with polycythemia vera (PV), and also in approximately half of those with essential thrombocythemia (ET) and primary myelofibrosis (PMF). In addition, several mutations of JAK2 exon 12 have also been reported. The discovery of these molecular markers has not only greatly improved the

Food allergy: from the of loss of tolerance induced by exclusion diets to specific oral tolerance induction.

The prevalence of food allergy and anaphylaxis in children is reported to be increasing in recent years. Evidence suggests that exposure to large doses of antigen might produce a suppression of the specific IgE response, so that the continuous contact with high doses of antigens favours the maintenance of tolerance In the same way loss of contact with allergen in children with specific IgE reactivity may favour a loss of tolerance with development of systemic reactions, while a progressive new contact with allergen may favour a specific tolerance induction. We hypothesize that widespread and u

Effects of indomethacin in premature infants with patent ductus arteriosus: results of a national collaborative study.

Among 3559 newborn infants with birth weight less than 1750 gm, 421 developing a hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus were entered into a randomized trial to evaluate the role of indomethacin in the management of PDA. Indomethacin given concurrently with usual medical therapy at the time of diagnosis resulted in ductal closure in 79%, versus 35% with placebo (P less than 0.001). Indomethacin as backup to usual medical treatment resulted in similar closure rates. To assess overall effects through hospital discharge, three management strategies were compared. Although mortality d

Evaluation of the preterm infant for patent ductus arteriosus.

As a first step in a multicenter, collaborative project to study the role of indomethacin in the management of patent ductus arteriosus in premature infants, a diagnostic scheme was developed, on an a priori basis, by a consensus of the participating neonatologists and pediatric cardiologists. The scheme, which utilizes clinical and noninvasive findings, was designed to detect infants with a "hemodynamically significant" patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Among 1,689 infants with birth weight less than 1,750 g who were monitored during the first year of the study, 342 (20.2%) met the criteria for
