Association Between Paternal Alcohol Consumption Before Conception and Anogenital Distance of Offspring.

BACKGROUND: There are limited studies on the effects of paternal alcohol consumption, before conception, on the reproductive development of offspring. Anogenital distance (AGD), the distance from the center of the anus to the genitals, is a sensitive biomarker of reproductive hormone abnormalities during the critical developmental window. The relationship between paternal alcohol consumption and AGD of human offspring has not been studied yet. METHODS: This cohort study included 1,292 pregnant women recruited in Shanghai. An in-person interview was conducted to collect information on demograp

Method for the estimation of genetic merit of animals with uncertain paternity under Bayesian inference.

The use of controlled mating or artificial insemination is impracticable in the case of large herds, mainly because of labour costs and the need to delimit areas during the breeding period. However, the exclusion of information from animals with uncertain paternity reduces genetic progress. The objectives of this study were as follows: (i) propose an iterative empirical Bayesian procedure to implement the hierarchical animal model (ITER); (ii) calculate the posterior probabilities of paternity by the maximum likelihood method following the concepts; (iii) compare an average numerator relations

Infertility and teratogenicity after paternal exposure to systemic dermatologic medications: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review assesses effects of paternal exposure to dermatologic medications by using the former US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pregnancy categories as a benchmark. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether systemic dermatologic medications can cause infertility and teratogenicity when taken by men. METHODS: Categories D and X dermatologic medications were identified; a systematic review of the literature and reviews of the FDA Adverse Events Reporting System and prescribing information were performed to identify the effects of these medications on male fertility and terato

Outcomes of Pregnancies With Maternal/Paternal Exposure in the Tofacitinib Safety Databases for Ulcerative Colitis.

BACKGROUND: Active inflammatory bowel disease increases the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Tofacitinib is an oral, small molecule Janus kinase inhibitor for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). As a small molecule, tofacitinib is likely to cross the placental barrier; however, information on the effects of tofacitinib on pregnancy outcomes is limited. We report pregnancy and newborn outcomes among patients in UC clinical studies with prenatal (maternal/paternal) exposure to tofacitinib. METHODS: Pregnancies with maternal/paternal exposure to tofacitinib were identified and outcomes

Genomic mosaicism in paternal sperm and multiple parental tissues in a Dravet syndrome cohort.

Genomic mosaicism in parental gametes and peripheral tissues is an important consideration for genetic counseling. We studied a Chinese cohort affected by a severe epileptic disorder, Dravet syndrome (DS). There were 56 fathers who donated semen and 15 parents who donated multiple peripheral tissue samples. We used an ultra-sensitive quantification method, micro-droplet digital PCR (mDDPCR), to detect parental mosaicism of the proband's pathogenic mutation in SCN1A, the causal gene of DS in 112 families. Ten of the 56 paternal sperm samples were found to exhibit mosaicism of the proband's muta

Schools as Surveilling Institutions? Paternal Incarceration, System Avoidance, and Parental Involvement in Schooling.

Parents play important roles in their children's lives, and parental involvement in elementary schooling in particular is meaningful for a range of child outcomes. Given the increasing number of school-aged children with incarcerated parents, this study explores the ways paternal incarceration is associated with mothers' and fathers' reports of home- and school-based involvement in schooling. Using Fragile Families Study data, we find that a father's incarceration inhibits his school- and home-based involvement in schooling, but associations for maternal involvement are weaker. Results are rob

Prenatal Paternal Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors Use and Risk of ADHD in Offspring.

OBJECTIVES: It has been shown that maternal prenatal exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may be a risk factor for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in offspring. Our goal was to examine whether paternal SSRI use before conception increases the risk of ADHD in offspring. METHODS: On the basis of Danish national registers, we conducted a cohort study of 781 470 singletons born between 1996 and 2008 with follow-up throughout 2013. The children whose fathers used SSRIs during the last 3 months before conception were identified as the exposed. Cox regression w

Beyond Boys' Bad Behavior: Paternal Incarceration and Cognitive Development in Middle Childhood.

A growing number of American school-aged children have incarcerated or formally incarcerated parents necessitating a more comprehensive understanding of the intergenerational effects of mass imprisonment. Using the Fragile Families Study, I assess whether having an incarcerated father impacts children's cognitive skill development into middle childhood. While previous studies have primarily found effects for boys' behavior problems, matching models and sensitivity analyses demonstrate that experiencing paternal incarceration by age 9 is associated with lower cognitive skills for both boys and

Transgenerational effects of paternal heroin addiction on anxiety and aggression behavior in male offspring.

BACKGROUND: Heroin addiction is a growing concern, affecting the socioeconomic development of many countries. Little is known about transgenerational effects on phenotype changes due to heroin addiction. This study aims to investigate changes in level of anxiety and aggression up to four different generations of adult male rats due to paternal exposure to heroin. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed with heroin intraperitoneally (i.p.) twice-daily for 14 days with increasing dosage regimen (F0-heroin). Male Sprague-Dawley rats (6-weeks-old) were divided into: (1) heroin exposed grou

Postpartum Domestic Violence in Homes With Young Children: The Role of Maternal and Paternal Drinking.

There has been limited investigation of mothers' drinking patterns and their experience of domestic abuse while parenting young children, especially in the context of co-resident fathers' drinking. Using data representative of the 2001 U.S. birth cohort, the authors conducted longitudinal latent class analyses of maternal drinking over four perinatal time points as predictors of maternal victimization at 2 years postpartum due to intimate partner violence. Women classified as higher risk drinkers over the study period faced significantly increased risk of physical abuse while parenting a 2-yea

A Case Study of Paternal Filicide-Suicide: Personality Disorder, Motives, and Victim Choice.

Although evidence with respect to its prevalence is mixed, it is clear that fathers perpetrate a serious proportion of filicide. There also seems to be a consensus that paternal filicide has attracted less research attention than its maternal counterpart and is therefore less well understood. National registries are a very rich source of data, but they generally provide limited information about the perpetrator as psychiatric, psychological and behavioral data are often lacking. This paper presents a fully documented case of a paternal filicide. Noteworthy is that two motives were present: spo

Myoclonic status and central fever in Angelman syndrome due to paternal uniparental disomy.

Myoclonic status in nonprogressive encephalopathy (MSNE) is an early-onset, drug-resistant epileptic syndrome characterized by occurrence of continuous diffuse epileptiform abnormalities, associated with positive and/or negative phenomena and accompanied by transient and recurring motor, cognitive, and behavioral impairment. MSNE has been reported in Angelman syndrome (AS) secondary to 15q11-13 deletions or UBE3A mutations but not to paternal uniparental disomy (UPD). We describe the case of a male patient with AS caused by UPD who developed a myoclonic status (MS) associated with long-lasting

Contribution of boars to reproductive performance and paternity after homospermic and heterospermic artificial insemination.

Heterospermic AI is commonly used in swine despite preventing precise evaluation of individual boar fertility. The present study compared the contribution of four boars (A, B, C and D) for reproductive performance and for paternity using homospermic and heterospermic (AB, AC, AD, BC, BD and CD) AI (n=204 for homospermic AI; n=307 for heterospermic AI). Blood samples from the four boars, from all sows inseminated with heterospermic doses and from the umbilical cords of their piglets, as well as tissue smears from mummified fetuses, were genotyped using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Investigating the fetal and postnatal effects of paternal alcohol exposure in mouse offspring: a review.

To further elucidate the possible effects of paternal alcohol exposure on fetal and post-natal development, Lee et al. conducted an experimental animal study from which potential transgenerational consequences of paternal alcohol exposure on mouse offspring were explored. The authors concluded that paternal alcohol consumption likely poses some risk to those developing offspring. However, the authors' analysis of the incidence of fetal abnormalities may be misleading. The incidence of abnormality for each treatment group was calculated by dividing the number of abnormalities by the total numbe

Paternal postnatal depression in Japan: an investigation of correlated factors including relationship with a partner.

BACKGROUND: A negative effect of paternal depression on child development has been revealed in several previous studies. The aims of this study were to examine the prevalence and relevant factors associated with paternal postnatal depression at four months postpartum, including age, part-time work or unemployment, experience of visiting a medical institution due to a mental health problem, economic anxiety, unexpected pregnancy, pregnancy with infertility treatment, first child, partner's depression, and lower marital relationship satisfaction. METHODS: We distributed 2032 self-report questio

Paternal transmission of MTHFD1 G1958A variant predisposes to neural tube defects in the offspring.

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the role of methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase (MTHFD1) G1958A variant (rs2236225) as a 'maternal, paternal, or embryonic' genetic risk factor for neural tube defect (NTD) susceptibility. It also estimated differential associations based on type of NTD, offspring sex, maternal-paternal-offspring genotype incompatibility, and parent-of-origin effects (POE) using both case-control and family-based approach. In addition, genotype impact on serum folate levels was also assessed. METHOD: The study population (n=900) consisted of 120 NTD case-parent triads (n=

Risk and resistance factors associated with paternal adjustment to obstetrical brachial plexus injuries.

This study aimed to identify risk and resistance factors associated with the psychological adjustment of fathers of children with obstetrical brachial plexus injuries (OBPI). Participants were 34 fathers of children with OBPI recruited from an Australian OBPI clinic. Measures completed were OBPI severity, disability related stress, family functioning and social support. Together the risk and resistance factors of severity and family functioning accounted for 28% of the total variance in paternal psychological adjustment. Family functioning explained 12% of the variance in psychological adjustm

Maternal care and paternal protection influence response to psychotherapy treatment for adult depression.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences of neglect, overprotection and abuse, well-recognized risk factors for the development of adult psychopathology, were examined as predictors of response to psychotherapy treatment for adults with depression. METHODS: Outpatients in a randomized clinical trial of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) or cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) completed the parental bonding instrument (PBI) at baseline to establish levels of care and protection. Childhood abuse was asked about using clinical interviews. The PBI variables were examined in tertiles while the abuse
