Perception of visual noise patterns depends on correlations produced in V1: A simulation study.

IMPORTANCE: The cord blood proteome, a repository of proteins derived from both mother and fetus, might offer valuable insights into the physiological and pathological state of the fetus. However, its association with birth weight and growth trajectories early in life remains unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To identify cord blood proteins associated with birth weight and the birth weight ratio (BWR) and to evaluate the associations of these cord blood proteins with early growth trajectories. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included 288 mother-child pairs from the ongoing prospect

An Eccentricity Gradient Reversal across High-Level Visual Cortex.

Human visual cortex contains regions selectively involved in perceiving and recognizing ecologically important visual stimuli such as people and places. Located in the ventral temporal lobe, these regions are organized consistently relative to cortical folding, a phenomenon thought to be inherited from how centrally or peripherally these stimuli are viewed with the retina. While this eccentricity theory of visual cortex has been one of the best descriptions of its functional organization, whether or not it accurately describes visual processing in all category-selective regions is not yet clea

A Probabilistic Functional Atlas of Human Occipito-Temporal Visual Cortex.

Human visual cortex contains many retinotopic and category-specific regions. These brain regions have been the focus of a large body of functional magnetic resonance imaging research, significantly expanding our understanding of visual processing. As studying these regions requires accurate localization of their cortical location, researchers perform functional localizer scans to identify these regions in each individual. However, it is not always possible to conduct these localizer scans. Here, we developed and validated a functional region of interest (ROI) atlas of early visual and category

Visual recognition in the peripheral field: letters versus symbols and adults versus children.

The plot of the form-resolving field (FRF) was obtained by tachistoscopically presenting two figures in each stimulus, one in the center of gaze and the other in the peripheral field. The figures in the periphery were placed at various eccentricities in different presentations. The ensuing plot of average letter recognition as a function of eccentricity is the FRF. Only the horizontal components of the FRFs were used in the comparisons. Three sets of figures were used as stimuli: regular-size letters, large-size letters, and symbols. Three groups of subjects were compared: adult ordinary reade

Modification of visual function by early visual experience.

Physiological experiments, involving recording from the visual cortex in young kittens and monkeys, have given new insight into human developmental disorders. In the visual cortex of normal cats and monkeys most neurones are selectively sensitive to the orientation of moving edges and they receive very similar signals from both eyes. Even in very young kittens without visual experience, most neurones are binocularly driven and a small proportion of them are genuinely orientation selective. There is no passive maturation of the system in the absence of visual experience, but even very brief exp

High-fidelity mapping of repetition-related changes in the parietal memory network.

fMRI studies of human memory have identified a "parietal memory network" (PMN) that displays distinct responses to novel and familiar stimuli, typically deactivating during initial encoding but robustly activating during retrieval. The small size of PMN regions, combined with their proximity to the neighboring default mode network, makes a targeted assessment of their responses in highly sampled subjects important for understanding information processing within the network. Here, we describe an experiment in which participants made semantic decisions about repeatedly-presented stimuli, assessi

Effects of adaptation on numerosity decoding in the human brain.

Psychophysical studies have shown that numerosity is a sensory attribute susceptible to adaptation. Neuroimaging studies have reported that, at least for relatively low numbers, numerosity can be accurately discriminated in the intra-parietal sulcus. Here we developed a novel rapid adaptation paradigm where adapting and test stimuli are separated by pauses sufficient to dissociate their BOLD activity. We used multivariate pattern recognition to classify brain activity evoked by non-symbolic numbers over a wide range (20-80), both before and after psychophysical adaptation to the highest numero

Gaze dynamics toward familiar and unfamiliar faces in prosopagnosia.

Recognizing familiar faces is typically fast and automatic in neurotypical individuals but is markedly impaired in congenital prosopagnosia (CP) – a lifelong face recognition deficit without apparent brain injury. While previous research has focused on deficits in face perception or gaze to facial features in CP, it remains unclear whether individuals with CP can use facial familiarity, either explicitly or implicitly, to guide gaze dynamics in goal-directed tasks. Here, we investigated whether familiarity modulates gaze behavior in individuals with CP using two tasks previously validated in n

Object speed and distractor number affect performance but not attentional allocation in multiple object tracking.

Keeping track of multiple moving objects across dynamic real-world scenarios such as driving, team sports, or crowded social environments is a fundamental challenge for visual attention. We have previously demonstrated that as the number of tracked objects increases, the strength of attentional facilitation allocated to each individual object decreases, limiting tracking success. It is also well established that beyond the number of tracked objects, faster-moving objects and objects embedded amongst higher numbers of distractors are more difficult to track. Are these effects on tracking diffic

Material fictions: Comparing physically based renderings and generative AI images through material perception.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) models unlock new ways to create images, emerging as a new medium alongside paintings, photographs, physically based renderings (PBR), etc. Generative AI images can be perceptually convincing without being physically plausible, allowing to investigate the boundaries of visual perception. This study examines whether generative AI images adhere to a medium-independent perceptual space converged from previous studies. We compared the perceptual similarity of images from three generative AI models against a bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (B

Rapid ensemble encoding of average scene features.

Visual ensemble perception involves the rapid global extraction of summary statistics (e.g., average features) from groups of items, without requiring single-item recognition and working memory resources. One theory that helps explain global visual perception is the principle of feature diagnosticity. This is when informative bottom-up visual features are preferentially processed to complete the task at hand by being consistent with one's top-down expectations. Past literature has studied ensemble perception using groups of objects and faces and has shown that both low-level (e.g., average col

Visual working memory for real-world objects is resistant to visual but vulnerable to semantic interference.

Visual working memory has greater capacity for maintaining meaningful objects than simple stimuli. This has been attributed to real-world object representations' higher dimensionality protecting their visual features from interference by those of other objects. However, object meaning could simultaneously create new, semantic sources of interference, but this possibility remains untested. Here, we addressed this question by quantifying low-level and high-level item similarity of real-world objects using a recurrent neural network model, as well as quantifying semantic similarity based on human

Internal domain generality for ensemble perception of average orientation: Comparing and integrating information from multiple stimulus categories.

Ensemble perception (the extraction of summary statistics from groups of objects) operates across a range of visual features and stimuli. Ensemble displays usually contain identical stimuli, although natural environments are composed of more heterogeneous items, raising the question of whether ensemble mechanisms can generalize across stimulus types ("internal domain generality"). We examined whether ensemble perception for orientation operates similarly across displays composed of different stimulus types (faces, shoes, triangles). In Experiment 1, participants compared average orientations a

Medial temporal cortex supports object perception by integrating over visuospatial sequences.

Perception unfolds across multiple timescales. For humans and other primates, many object-centric visual attributes can be inferred 'at a glance' (i.e., given <200 ms of visual information), an ability supported by ventral temporal cortex (VTC). Other perceptual inferences require more time; to determine a novel object's identity, we might need to represent its unique configuration of visual features, requiring multiple 'glances.' Here we evaluate whether medial temporal cortex (MTC), downstream from VTC, supports object perception by integrating over such visuospatial sequences. We first comp

Spatiotemporal position overlap disrupts feature binding in visual working memory.

This study examined how task-irrelevant spatial and temporal relationships influence feature binding in visual working memory (VWM). Participants viewed two sequential memory displays, each containing two distinct objects. Objects were presented either simultaneously at different locations (thereby sharing temporal position) or sequentially at the same location (thereby sharing spatial position). On each trial, a test probe either matched one of the four memory items or combined features from two different items (non-match). Nonmatching probes were constructed to share spatial, temporal, or ne

Validation of a screening test based on symbols visual search to detect visuo-attentionnal reading difficulties.

OBJECTIVE: Visuo-attentional dyslexia has been associated with impaired simultaneous visual processing of multiple items made of separable features (i.e. symbols). We designed a visual search screening test, consisting to find the (unique) black circle among circles of various colours versus among circles combined with a bar of various length and location. We evaluated its reliability and its validity to detect visuo-attentional deficit prone to affect reading. RESULTS OF STUDY 1: Assessment of 2015 children between 3 and 11 years old established that the screening test was feasible from kinde

Visual word form processing deficits driven by severity of reading impairments in children with developmental dyslexia.

The visual word form area (VWFA) in the left ventral occipito-temporal (vOT) cortex is key to fluent reading in children and adults. Diminished VWFA activation during print processing tasks is a common finding in subjects with severe reading problems. Here, we report fMRI data from a multicentre study with 140 children in primary school (7.9-12.2 years; 55 children with dyslexia, 73 typical readers, 12 intermediate readers). All performed a semantic task on visually presented words and a matched control task on symbol strings. With this large group of children, including the entire spectrum fr

Effects of pupil size on canine visual evoked potential with pattern stimulation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of pupil diameter on canine visual evoked potentials with pattern stimulation (P-VEP). Atropine eye drop (1.0%) was applied to both eyes as a cycloplegic drug, and tafluprost eye drop (0.015%) was applied to one eye that was selected randomly for miosis (miosis group). The other eye did not receive tafluprost (mydriasis group). P-VEP was recorded at three pattern sizes. The P100 implicit time at a small pattern size in the mydriasis group was significantly prolonged compared to the miosis group. We hypothesized that the prolonged P100 im

Effect of Stimulus Orientation on Visual Function in Children with Refractive Amblyopia.

PURPOSE: We investigated and characterized the patterns of meridional anisotropies in newly diagnosed refractive amblyopes using pattern onset-offset visual evoked potentials (POVEPs) and psychophysical grating acuity (GA). METHODS: Twenty-five refractive amblyopes were recruited and compared with non-amblyopic controls from our previous study. Monocular POVEPs were recorded in response to sinewave 4 cycles per degree (cpd) grating stimuli oriented along each individual participants' principal astigmatic meridians, which were approximately horizontal (meridian 1) and vertical (meridian 2). Emergence of symmetry selectivity in the visual areas of the human brain: fMRI responses to symmetry presented in both frontoparallel and slanted planes.

Symmetry is effortlessly perceived by humans across changes in viewing geometry. Here, we re-examined the network subserving symmetry processing in the context of up-to-date retinotopic definitions of visual areas. Responses in object selective cortex, as defined by functional localizers, were also examined. We further examined responses to both frontoparallel and slanted symmetry while manipulating attention both toward and away from symmetry. Symmetry-specific responses first emerge in V3 and continue across all downstream areas examined. Of the retinotopic areas, ventral occipital VO1 showe
