OBJECTIVE: Despite the increasing awareness of the contribution of myofascial dysfunctions to upper limb pain in breast cancer survivors, reliability of the identification of myofascial trigger points (MTPs) in this population has not yet been investigated. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the interrater reliability of the identification of MTPs by palpation at the upper limb region in breast cancer survivors with upper limb pain.
DESIGN: Interrater reliability study.
SETTING: University Hospitals Leuven, Belgium.
SUBJECTS: Thirty breast cancer survivors with pain

BACKGROUND: Trumpet playing requires precise embouchure, breath control, and postural support, engaging facial and respiratory muscles as well as muscles within the abdomen, thorax, and neck. Research on muscle activity during trumpet playing focuses mainly on embouchure and its involved facial muscles, whereas studies investigating torso muscles are scarce.
METHODS: In this observational study, the activity of the abdominal, thoracal, and neck muscles of 24 male professional trumpet players between 20-45 years of age were measured with surface electromyography (sEMG) during playing. Electrod

We present a 23-year-old male patient with severe PS, characterized by marked left thoracic wall deformity. Reconstruction was performed using the Fat-Augmented Latissimus Dorsi flap, which was fixed to the chest wall hollowing corresponding to where the pectoralis major muscle was missing. Patient was satisfied with final aesthetic and functional result.

Poland syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by agenesis of the pectoralis major muscle. It is generally unilateral, right-sided, and can be associated with a myriad of thoracic and upper limb defects. Knowledge of this disorder can lead the astute clinician to prompt diagnosis and referral to surgical specialists for further workup. Surgery is often performed for either esthetic or functional concerns.

Massive defects of the upper aerodigestive tract present a reconstructive challenge. We report a case in which a large defect of the naso-oropharyngeal and oesophagus was reconstructed with a combination of a gastric pull-up and a pectoralis major muscle flap. Postoperative function was good and survival was in excess of 16 months. The history of such reconstructions and possible alternative techniques are also discussed.

We describe a technique that facilitates excisional biopsy of the axillary lymph nodes. The arm is suspended anterior to the chest in an adducted position that displaces the pectoralis major muscle medially and positions the axillary lymph nodes immediately deep to the hair-bearing area of the skin. This position permits biopsy of the lymph nodes with a relatively short incision and a minimum of dissection.

Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) is often attributed to neuropathic, genetic, or psychosocial factors, whereas musculoskeletal causes, such as myofascial pain syndrome (MPS), are frequently overlooked. We report a case of delayed-onset MPS as a musculoskeletal manifestation of CPSP following axillary artery cannulation, aiming to raise awareness of this potential etiology. A 48-year-old man developed persistent right anterior chest pain one year after total arch replacement surgery. Physical examination revealed postural asymmetry, atrophy of the right pectoralis major muscle, mechanical allod

Duck meat is increasingly valued for its distinctive sensory and nutritional properties. Breast muscle samples (pectoralis major and minor) were collected from three duck groups differing in genetic background and rearing system: intensively reared Pekin ducks (PD; n = 47), semi-extensively reared mallards for hunting purposes (MDH; n = 14), and wild mallards (WMD; n = 20), all with balanced sex representation. This study assessed the origin effect on fatty acid (FA) composition. WMD showed the most favorable lipid profile, with higher polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), especially n-3 PUFA an

»: Pectoralis major (PM) tendon tears are predominantly seen in young men, and the majority of tears occur as tendon avulsions involving the sternal head. Weightlifting, specifically bench-pressing, and sporting activities with eccentric overloading of the PM tendon are the 2 most common activities that result in PM injury.
»: Early surgical repair or reconstruction should be offered to younger, active patients with a complete PM tear; the majority of the patients undergoing surgical repair achieve good-to-excellent outcomes.
»: Nonsurgical treatment of a complete PM tear is an option but wi

White striping (WS) is an emerging myopathy of broiler chickens characterized by white striation of muscle. Despite the recent advances, the pathomechanism underlying the WS remains elusive. The aim of this study was to characterize morphological and molecular features of WS in broiler chickens. 50 pectoralis muscles were collected from 55 days old ROSS 308 broiler chickens with a mean weight of 3.5 kg. Samples were snap frozen and analyzed by histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence. Real-time-PCR was used to evaluate the expression of different cytokines. Histological les…

The functions of the subclavius muscle (SM) are described as stabilization of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) and resisting elevation of the lateral end of the clavicle. During systematic cadaveric dissections, we observed additional fibrous structures, previously described as variants of the anatomy, extending from the SM and inserting into the coracoid process (CP). Due to the high incidence of these structures in our dissections, we hypothesized that the attachment at the CP is more common than appreciated and that, as a corollary, the function of the SM was (or has been) more complex than

BACKGROUND: Malignant invasion of the respiratory tract is a common complication in advanced cases of esophageal carcinoma. Resection and reconstruction can be extremely challenging, particularly when the invasion is intrathoracic. A circumferential tracheal resection with direct tracheal closure or mediastinal tracheostomy is often performed, but the outcome is not always favorable, with high morbidity rates, loss of vocal function, and reduced quality of life.
METHODS: We present our experience in performing an intrathoracic tracheal reconstruction in which a conchal cartilage graft was use

BACKGROUND: Faced with our intraoperative inability to primarily close a very wide isolated cleft sternum of a pediatric patient without causing cardiovascular decompensation, we describe our use of a synthetic material for partial approximation allowing muscular coverage.
METHOD: We report an infant who was born with an isolated large complete sternal cleft where a trial of primary surgical repair had to be abandoned because of cardiovascular compromise. A similar difficulty was encountered in approximating the origins of both pectoralis major muscle flaps at the midline. Thus, a pliable syn

In 1841 A. POLAND described a rare complex of malformations in the male, characterized a unilateral pectoral muscle defect combined with ipsilateral symbrachydaktyly. If in the female a POLAND Syndrome is associated with ipsilateral hypo- or aplasia of the breast as a leading feature, we propose to name this entity "Amazone Syndrome". Altogether 5 POLAND Syndromes and 40 "Amazone Syndromes" were seen in our department. For the latter a morphological grading into four groups was performed for clinical purposes. The malformation complex of the poland syndrome develops between the 2nd and 5th wee

Langer's axillary arch (LAA) is the most common accessory muscle encountered during axillary surgery. We present a 55-year-old lady who underwent a right wide local excision and sentinel lymph node biopsy. Intraoperatively, we identified an aberrant muscle slip traversing the axilla, anterior to the neurovascular structures. It originated from the latissimus dorsi muscle and inserted into the pectoralis major. This report explores the current knowledge of LAA and discusses the importance of recognising it intraoperatively in the era of minimisation of axillary surgery. Implications of failing
