Individual and contextual influences on adolescent smoking.

Cigarette smoking among adolescents remains one of the most important public health challenges. Despite much attention to research on the etiology of smoking, notably the examination of factors that differentiate adolescent smokers from never smokers, much less is known about factors that predict the development of dependence once an adolescent tries smoking. This paper reviews individual and contextual influences on the progression of smoking among adolescents. Highlights include a consideration of multiple levels of influence, from intra-individual factors, such as genetics, demographics, te

Individual and network factors associated with HCV treatment uptake among people who inject drugs.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment uptake among people who inject drugs (PWID), a population with disproportionately high rates of HCV, remains low. Peers have been shown to positively impact a broad range of health outcomes for PWID. There is, however, limited data on the impact of PWID social network members on HCV treatment. METHODS: HCV-infected PWID enrolled in an ongoing community-based cohort were recruited as "indexes" to complete an egocentric social network survey. The survey elicited from the index PWID a list of their network members and the index's perception of networ

Perspectives on the HIV continuum of care among adult opioid users in New York City: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Engagement in the HIV care continuum combined with office-based opioid treatment remains a cornerstone in addressing the intertwined epidemics of opioid use disorder (OUD) and HIV/AIDS. Factors influencing patient engagement with OUD and HIV care are complex and require further study. METHODS: In this qualitative study, in-depth interviews were conducted among 23 adult patients who use drugs (PWUD) in an inpatient detoxification program in New York City. The semi-structured interview guide elicited participant experiences with various phases of the HIV care continuum, including fa

Clinical screening and peer interventions to prevent substance use in at-risk adolescents: A longitudinal single-arm trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Mental health conditions and substance use disorders commonly co-occur and adolescence is a period of increased risk for both. A … future substance use disorder. The intervention seeks to harness the protective effects of positive peer influence within the context of ongoing patient-provider relationships to promote delayed onset of substance use and inform feasibility and design of a future multi-site trial.

Parent, peer, and social factors associated with youth's inconsistent information in reporting tobacco use.

OBJECTIVES: Self-reported tobacco use among youth often diverges from biomarker indicators raising concerns about the accuracy of surveillance estimates. However, few studies have examined factors associated with the inconsistencies. Guided by Bristol and Mangleburg's model of youth information disclosure, this study assessed parent, peer, and social correlates of inconsistency between self-reported tobacco use and biomarker-verified nicotine exposure. METHODS: Data were drawn from Wave 5 (2018-2019) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. Youth aged 13-17 who self-reported

Cross-national evidence for the clustering and psychosocial correlates of adolescent risk behaviours in 27 countries.

BACKGROUND: According to Jessor's Problem Behaviour Theory (PBT) and Moffitt's theory of adolescence-limited antisocial behaviour, adolescent risk behaviours cluster and can be predicted by various psychosocial factors including parent, peer and school attachment. This study tested the potential influence of the sociocultural, or macro-level, environment on the clustering and correlates of adolescent risk behaviour across 27 European and North American countries. METHODS: Analyses were based on data from the 2009-10 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study. Participants compromis

Factors influencing the acceptability of hepatitis C screening among people with experience of incarceration in Quebec, Canada: A qualitative descriptive study guided by the Theoretical Domains Framework.

BACKGROUND: For hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination to occur in carceral settings, opt-out screening on admission, the first step in the HCV care cascade, is recommended. As screening strategies in Quebec provincial prisons vary, we aimed to identify factors influencing the acceptability of HCV screening among people with experience of incarceration (PWEI). METHODS: A theory-based qualitative descriptive study was used to conduct semi-structured interviews. Interview guides and analyses were guided by the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF). Directed content analysis was used to identify doma

Effects of positive and negative peer modelling versus neutral social interaction before spinal manipulative therapy in adults with chronic non-specific low back pain: protocol for a three-arm randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNSLBP) is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Responses to spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) may be influenced by treatment expectations, which can be shaped through observational learning. OBJECTIVES: To compare current pain intensity 60 min after lumbar SMT among positive peer-modeling, neutral social-interaction, and negative peer-modeling conditions in individuals with CNSLBP. METHODS/DESIGN: This single-center, three-arm randomized controlled trial will allocate participants in a 1:1:1 ratio to positive peer modeling, neutral social

Integrating etiological models of social anxiety and depression in youth: evidence for a cumulative interpersonal risk model.

Models of social anxiety and depression in youth have been developed separately, and they contain similar etiological influences. Given the high comorbidity of social anxiety and depression, we examine whether the posited etiological constructs are a correlate of, or a risk factor for, social anxiety and/or depression at the symptom level and the diagnostic level. We find core risk factors of temperament, genetics, and parent psychopathology (i.e., depression and anxiety) are neither necessary nor sufficient for the development of social anxiety and/or depression. Instead, aspects of children'

Within-person Relations between Domains of Socio-emotional Development during Childhood and Adolescence.

Adolescence is a critical period in the development of mental health with nearly 1 in 5 adolescents suffering from mental health problems and more than 40 percent of these experiencing at least one co-occurring mental health disorder. This study investigates whether there are differences in the relations between key dimensions of child and adolescent mental health in adolescence compared to childhood. Mental health and related socio-emotional traits were measured longitudinally at ages 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, and 16 in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (N = 11279) using the Stren

Effect of Parental English Proficiency on Psychosocial Functioning in Children with Craniofacial Anomalies.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial distress in children with craniofacial anomalies is multifactorial. A known cause of childhood psychosocial distress is parental limited English proficiency; however, its role as a psychosocial stressor in the craniofacial anomaly population remains unknown. The current study aimed to understand the potential influence of parental English proficiency in children with craniofacial anomalies. METHODS: Two hundred ninety-six children were prospectively evaluated at the University of California, Los Angels and the Orthopaedic Institute for Children using the Pediatric Pat

Value and usability of unpublished data sources for systematic reviews and network meta-analyses.

Peer-reviewed publications and conference proceedings are the mainstay of data sources for systematic reviews and network meta-analyses (NMA), but access to informative unpublished data is now becoming commonplace. To explore the usefulness of three types of 'grey' literature-clinical trials registries, clinical study reports and data from regulatory authorities-we conducted four case studies. The reporting of outcome data in peer-reviewed publications, the clinical trials registries and the clinical study reports for two clinical trials-one in melanoma, one in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (J

Influence of gender on initiation of tobacco and nicotine containing product use among U.S. Air Force trainees.

Military personnel are a subgroup of young adults at risk for tobacco and nicotine containing product (TNCP) use. This study of US Air Force (USAF) trainees who were never users of TNCPs examined gender, peer tobacco use, and tobacco use intentions as predictors of TNCP initiation after Basic Military Training (BMT). We used a longitudinal cohort assessment study design with baseline and 1-year surveys completed (2011-2016) among 2393 USAF trainees: 73% men, 95% aged 18-25 years, 36% racial minorities. Overall, initiation of any TNCP use at 1-year was 23% (20% women, 24% men). From a multivari

Factors Influencing Co-Use of Tobacco and Cannabis Amongst Young Adults in UK Further Education Colleges: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco and cannabis are commonly co-used (i.e., used concurrently or co-administered) but rarely 'co-addressed' and few co-use interventions exist. Young adulthood presents a key age for intervening in substance use, therefore understanding young adults' perspective is crucial, but little is known about how they understand or experience co-use. This study aimed to explore factors influencing co-use and changes to use within a population of young adults in the UK. METHODS: Participants were young adults recruited via three Further Education (vocational) colleges, who reported pa

Benefits of a near-peer program from the tutors' perspective: a survey of Australian junior doctors in a regional teaching program.

BACKGROUND: Near-peer teaching has been shown to provide diverse benefits for both tutees and tutors in senior medical student and junior trainee settings. However, junior trainees may face more obstacles in teaching including competing clinical priorities and time management. We sought to investigate the challenges and benefits of engaging in near-peer teaching for junior trainees within our local context. Our Near-Peer Medical Teaching (NPMT) teaching program is designed and facilitated by junior doctors for medical students at the Central Coast Clinical School (University of Newcastle) of t
