Auditory conflict processing: behavioral and electrophysiologic manifestations of the stroop effect.

BACKGROUND: One of the most extensively studied phenomena in cognitive neuroscience is the Stroop effect. In an enormous corpus of literature, the Stroop task has been used to study conflict processing in the visual modality; however, scarce data exist in the auditory modality. PURPOSE: The main goal of the present study was to investigate auditory conflict processing by means of behavioral and electrophysiologic measures elicited during standard and reversed Stroop tasks. A secondary goal was to examine practice-related effects. RESEARCH DESIGN: Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded

Mobile computation: spatiotemporal integration of the properties of objects in motion.

We demonstrate that, as an object moves, color and motion signals from successive, widely spaced locations are integrated, but letter and digit shapes are not. The features that integrate as an object moves match those that integrate when the eyes move but the object is stationary (spatiotopic integration). We suggest that this integration is mediated by large receptive fields gated by attention and that it occurs for surface features (motion and color) that can be summed without precise alignment but not shape features (letters or digits) that require such alignment. Rapidly alternating pairs

Rightward collisions and their association with pseudoneglect.

Whereas right parietal damage can result in left hemineglect, the general population shows a subtle neglect of the right hemispace-known as pseudoneglect. A recent study has demonstrated that people collide to the right more often and attributed this bias to pseudoneglect. [Nicholls, M. E. R., Loftus, A., Meyer, K., & Mattingley, J.B. (2007). Things that go bump in the right: The effect of unimanual activity on rightward collisions. Neuropsychologia, 45, 1122-1126]. Effects of continuous masking noise on tone-evoked magnetic fields in humans.

Two different types of steep loudness growth have been reported in detail in psychoacoustical studies but have rarely been evaluated by objective methods in humans. One occurs in inner-ear hearing-impaired patients and is known as loudness recruitment. Another similar phenomenon is observed in healthy subjects with concurrent presence of background noise. Concerning the first type, our previous study using magnetoencephalography (MEG) showed that enhancement of the dipole moment of N100m with increase in stimulus intensity was greater in patients than in normal individuals. However, it is uncl

Phase-dependent suppression of transient evoked and distortion product otoacoustic emissions by a low-frequency tone.

The subjective recording of the masked threshold of short acoustical stimuli with a loud tone of 30 Hz (phase audiogram) has been used for the clinical diagnosis of endolymphatic hydrops (EH). In normally-hearing subjects, a marked modulation of the threshold was found, depending on the phase of the low-frequency tone. A very small dependence was found in patients with Menière's disease, due to the micromechanical changes in the basilar membrane (BM). The same phase relationship becomes apparent in low-frequency suppression of otoacoustic emissions. The amplitudes of TEOAEs are controlled by t

Effects of salicylates on evoked otoacoustic emissions and remote masking in humans.

The aim of this study was to evaluate, in young volunteer subjects, the effects of salicylates on evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs), which presumably reflect an active mechanical process in the cochlea due to outer hair cell (OHC) activity, and on remote masking (RM), which has been proposed as a useful tool in the study of the non-linear cochlear distortion products generated by high-frequency maskers. Data from the present research are consistent with the literature showing a reversible effect of salicylate leading to elevated hearing thresholds and reduced EOAE amplitudes. From the point

Contralateral induction by frequency spectrum in hallucinating schizophrenics.

Seventeen schizophrenic patients who had all experienced auditory hallucinations were compared with 14 subjects of a reference group on a test of contralateral induction. Contralateral induction means that a sound is illusively heard as coming from a location where it belongs according to its spectral content. The phenomenon is connected with a simultaneous relative elimination of masking. The schizophrenic subjects deviated from the reference group in several aspects. Some of them did not hear the sound being induced to the contralateral side, which it was for all reference subjects. Another

NoSo and NoS pi detection as a function of masker bandwidth in normal-hearing and cochlear-impaired listeners.

NoSo and NoS pi detection thresholds for a 500-Hz pure-tone signal were measured as a function of masking noise bandwidth in normal-hearing and cochlear hearing-impaired subjects. NoSo and NoS pi critical bands were derived from the bandlimited noise functions. A notched noise measure of the monaural critical band was also obtained for each ear. One hypothesis tested was that an asymmetrical monaural critical band would result in a relatively steep improvement of the NoS pi detection threshold as a function of decreasing masker bandwidth and would, therefore, be associated with a wider binaura

Stimulus intensity and loudness recruitment: neural correlates.

An abnormally rapid rate of loudness growth for given increments in stimulus intensity is seen both in patients with cochlear pathology and in normal listeners under conditions of wide-spectrum noise masking. The phenomenological similarity between these psychophysical observations raises the question of whether a single mechanism, or set of mechanisms, underlies them. Recent neurophysiological studies in animals have addressed the effects of cochlear pathology and noise masking on the neural correlates of stimulus intensity in the central auditory nervous system. A comparison of the data pres

Effects of stimulus polarity on the local evoked potential in auditory brainstem implant users.

Auditory brainstem implants (ABI) can enable hearing sensation through electrical stimulation of the cochlear nucleus. The basic stimulation and signal coding strategies of the ABI are based on those of the cochlear implant. This may not always be optimal, and ABI-specific strategies may be preferred. In a cohort of ten ABI users, we examined the feasibility of measuring local evoked potentials (LEP) via fine-grained stimulation with a forward masking paradigm. We introduce a new baseline-dependent definition of LEP amplitude for analyzing the LEP amplitude growth function to obtain threshold

Neural representations of concurrent sounds with overlapping spectra in rat inferior colliculus: Comparisons between temporal-fine structure and envelope.

Perceptual segregation of multiple sounds, which overlap in both time and spectra, into individual auditory streams is critical for hearing in natural environments. Some cues such as interaural time disparities (ITDs) play an important role in the segregation, especially when sounds are separated in space. In this study, we investigated the neural representation of two uncorrelated narrowband noises that shared the identical spectrum in the rat inferior colliculus (IC) using frequency-following-response (FFR) recordings, when the ITD for each noise stimulus was manipulated. The results of this

Effect of Contralateral Medial Olivocochlear Feedback on Perceptual Estimates of Cochlear Gain and Compression.

The active cochlear mechanism amplifies responses to low-intensity sounds, compresses the range of input sound intensities to a smaller output range, and increases cochlear frequency selectivity. The gain of the active mechanism can be modulated by the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system, creating the possibility of top-down control at the earliest level of auditory processing. In humans, MOC function has mostly been measured by the suppression of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), typically as a result of MOC activation by a contralateral elicitor sound. The exact relationship between OAE s

Role of worry in patients with chronic tinnitus and sensorineural hearing loss: a preliminary study.

Tinnitus-related distress appears to be more strongly associated with multiple psychological factors than with any perceptual properties of tinnitus. Prior studies have not investigated the role of worry in tinnitus sufferers. Worry is a dispositional cognitive trait that involves a pervasive, non-specific, future-oriented proneness to fretting, which can foster negative affective states and catastrophic thinking about a specific trouble when the trouble is actual and present. We examined the relationship between worry and self-perceived anxiety and depressive symptoms and handicap in 54 outpa

Speech-perception-in-noise deficits in dyslexia.

Speech perception deficits in developmental dyslexia were investigated in quiet and various noise conditions. Dyslexics exhibited clear speech perception deficits in noise but not in silence. Place-of-articulation was more affected than voicing or manner-of-articulation. Speech-perception-in-noise deficits persisted when performance of dyslexics was compared to that of much younger children matched on reading age, underscoring the fundamental nature of speech-perception-in-noise deficits. The deficits were not due to poor spectral or temporal resolution because dyslexics exhibited normal 'mask

Conscious perception of flickering stimuli in binocular rivalry and continuous flash suppression is not affected by tACS-induced SSR modulation.

The content of conscious perception is known to correlate with steady-state responses (SSRs), yet their causal relationship remains unclear. Can we manipulate conscious perception by directly interfering with SSRs through transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS)? Here, we directly addressed this question in three experiments involving binocular rivalry and continuous flash suppression (CFS). Specifically, while participants (N = 24) viewed either binocular rivalry or tried to detect stimuli masked by CFS, we applied sham or real tACS across parieto-occipital cortex at either the sam

The amygdala and the experience of affect.

The current study examined the hypothesis that amygdala activation serves as a neural precondition for negative affective experience. Participants' affective experience was measured by asking them to report on their momentary experiences several times a day over the course of a month using an electronic experience-sampling procedure. One year later, participants viewed backwardly masked depictions of fear while functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to measure their amygdala and fusiform gyrus activation. Negative affect, as measured during the experience-sampling procedure 1-year prio

Bottom-Up and Top-Down Factors Differentially Influence Stimulus Representations Across Large-Scale Attentional Networks.

Visual attention is thought to be supported by three large-scale frontoparietal networks: the frontoparietal control network (FPCN), the dorsal attention network (DAN), and the ventral attention network (VAN). The traditional view is that these networks support visual attention by biasing and evaluating sensory representations in visual cortical regions. However, recent evidence suggests that frontoparietal regions actively represent perceptual stimuli. Here, we assessed how perceptual stimuli are represented across large-scale frontoparietal and visual networks. Specifically, we tested whethe

Electrophysiologic and Behavioral Masking Level Differences in Young and Older Listeners.

PURPOSE: Many older adults have hearing loss and poor speech understanding. Poor synchrony in auditory nerves may be a factor. The behavioral masking level difference (vMLD) has been used to evaluate temporal processing, but study results vary. Behavioral tests are limited in studies of neural function. We used both the vMLD and the electrophysiologic masking level difference (eMLD) to investigate age-related hearing loss (ARHL), particularly by evaluating its peripheral and central components. METHOD: The masking level difference (MLD) is a binaural test measured as the difference in dB betw

Informational masking of speech in dyslexic children.

Studies evaluating speech perception in noise have reported inconsistent results regarding a potential deficit in dyslexic children. So far, most of them investigated energetic masking. The present study evaluated situations inducing mostly informational masking, which reflects cognitive interference induced by the masker. Dyslexic children were asked to identify a female target syllable presented in quiet, babble, unmodulated, and modulated speech-shaped noise. Whereas their performance was comparable to normal-reading children in quiet, it dropped significantly in all noisy conditions compar

Children's Subjective Ratings and Opinions of Typical and Dysphonic Voice After Performing a Language Comprehension Task in Background Noise.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies suggest that dysphonic voices are perceived more negatively than typical voices, and it is possible that vocal perception influences academic achievement and comprehension. This study assessed children's subjective ratings and opinions of a typical and dysphonic voice after performing a language comprehension task in background noise. It also explored if subjective ratings were related to performance in the comprehension task. STUDY DESIGN: Ninety-three 8-year-old children participated and were randomly allocated to two groups. METHODS: A digital version of the Te
