Forty-nine nonpregnant women with extensive condylomata acuminata of the vulva were studied to evaluate the effectiveness of topical 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) for treating vulvar condylomata and to compare the results of continuous use with periodic use of the medication. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of a 2-month topical interferon alpha 2b treatment in patients with refractory vernal keratoconjunctivitis.
METHODS: Twelve (10 male, 2 female) patients with refractory vernal keratoconjunctivitis received topical treatment with one million IU/mL interferon alpha 2b 4 times a day for 2 months. Symptom and ophthalmological examination scores were assessed at baseline and during follow-up.

Radiation skin reactions occur in the majority of cases of patients undergoing radiotherapy for breast cancer with varying degrees of severity. Guidelines for skin care and for the use of topical agents and dressings have developed over the years of practice but there is little empirical evidence on which to base a decision for best practice. (1) Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of psoriasis in children. Topical agents should be tried first, especially well-tolerated products such as emollients. Topical corticosteroids are sometimes useful during exacerbations but, given adverse effects, they should only be used for short periods; (2) UVB phototherapy is an option for extensive psoriasis refractory to local treatments, but it carries a long-term risk of skin cancer. Immunosuppressants have not been well assessed in this setting, but methotrexate has been better evaluated than the others.

Topical application of skin-lightening cream is increasingly undertaken in many non-Caucasian populations for cultural and social reasons. It is a rare cause of poisoning that has potential to lead to significant harm due to skin damage and systemic absorption of cream following application over prolonged periods of time. This case report describes for the development of multi-organ failure in an adult due to salicylate toxicity after whole-body application of a skin-lightening cream for 24 h. It highlights the need for vigilance and awareness of the toxic potential of topical salicylates.
