Orofacial pain.

Orofacial pain is an area of considerable interest in aging. Orofacial nociceptive pain arises mainly from injury or disease afflicting the teeth or the supporting structures of the teeth (periodontium); however it may arise from other intraoral or nonintraoral structures. Because of the rich innervation of the orofacial complex, pain may be referred to remote sites. Neuropathic pains, such as trigeminal neuralgia and postherpetic neuralgia, result from nerve injury and are usually seen only in older adults. Establishment of the source and cause of the pain results in effective pain management…

Formation of acellular root cementum in relation to dental and non-dental hard tissues in the rat.

After the periodontium of the rat was wounded, the formation of acellular extrinsic fiber cementum (AEFC) did not appear to be restricted to the hard dental tissues (pre-existing cementum, dentin, and enamel). Layers resembling AEFC were also deposited along the inner wall of the alveolar bone. At the time of observation (six weeks after being wounded), cells other than fibroblast-like cells could not be distinguished close to the newly formed AEFC-like layers. We suggest that the deposition of this material was related to the activity of periodontal ligament fibroblasts.

[Morphological aspects of vascular changes in the gingival tissue in periodontosis].

The authors report the results from detailed morphological, histochemical and electron microscopic studies on the gingivae of patients without diseases other than periodontosis and of patients with periodontosis and underlying hypertension and atherosclerosis. In each group of patients, the authors established a relationship between the clinical particularities of the course of the periodontosis and the characteristics of the microcirculation in the periodontium. It was also evidenced that the changes in the gingival tissues observed in these groups of patients were due to fundamental differen…

Stem cell and biomaterials research in dental tissue engineering and regeneration.

This review summarizes approaches used in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, with a focus on dental applications. Dental caries and periodontal disease are the most common diseases resulting in tissue loss. To replace or regenerate new tissues, various sources of stem cells have been identified such as somatic stem cells from teeth and peridontium. Advances in biomaterial sciences including microfabrication, self-assembled biomimetic peptides, and 3-dimensional printing hold great promise for whole-organ or partial tissue regeneration to replace teeth and periodontium.

Periodontal granulation tissue - To remove or not to remove, that is the question.

Formation of granulation tissue is a fundamental phase in periodontal wound healing with subsequent maturation leading to regeneration or repair. However, persistently inflamed granulation tissue presents in osseous defects as a result of periodontitis and is routinely disrupted and discarded with non-surgical and surgical therapy to facilitate wound healing or improve chances of regeneration. Histological assessment suggests that granulation tissue from periodontitis-affected sites is effectively a chronic inflammatory tissue resulting from impaired wound healing due to persistence of bacteri

Critical features of periodontal flaps with regard to blood clot stability: A review.

BACKGROUND: Wound healing is a multifactorial procedure involving different cell types and biological mediators. The principles of wound healing are also applicable to periodontal tissues. The formation and stability of blood clots play a vital role in successful healing of wounds in periodontal tissues. The aim of the present review was to highlight the vital factors of periodontal flaps associated with blood clot stability. HIGHLIGHT: The data on periodontal regeneration and wound healing have evolved greatly in light of several factors, including space for blood clots and blood clot stabil

Current Trends in In Vitro Modeling to Mimic Cellular Crosstalk in Periodontal Tissue.

Clinical evidence indicates that in physiological and therapeutic conditions a continuous remodeling of the tooth root cementum and the periodontal apparatus is required to maintain tissue strength, to prevent damage, and to secure teeth anchorage. Within the tooth's surrounding tissues, tooth root cementum and the periodontal ligament are the key regulators of a functional tissue homeostasis. While the root cementum anchors the periodontal fibers to the tooth root, the periodontal ligament itself is the key regulator of tissue resorption, the remodeling process, and mechanical signal transduc

Localisation of citrullinated and carbamylated proteins in inflamed gingival tissues from rheumatoid arthritis patients.

OBJECTIVES: It has been proposed that citrullination and carbamylation occur in the inflamed periodontium and could be the plausible mechanisms for the generation of antigens involved in the development and progression of RA. The purpose of this study was to determine the presence and location of citrullinated and carbamylated proteins in the gingival tissues and compare their abundance in periodontitis (PD) patients with or without RA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Gingival tissue samples of healthy (n = 5), PD with RA (n = 5) and PD without RA (n = 5) were collected. Specimens were formalin fixed,…

[Periodontal status assessment before orthodontic treatment and opportune moment selection for orthodontic treatment].

The aesthetic demands of teeth by the public have improved with the increase in the living standard. Orthodontics, which is a method of aesthetic dentistry, is becoming increasingly important. Orthodontic treatment mainly involves the application of orthodontic force to the teeth and guides the reconstruction of the periodontal tissue, thereby changing the position of the teeth at the occlusal bone. Orthodontic treatment can also improve the dental occlusion caused by dentition crowding and teeth mobility to achieve long-term stability of periodontal tissue. The number of patients with periodo

Advanced biomaterials and their potential applications in the treatment of periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is considered as a widespread infectious disease and the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. Attempts for developing periodontal disease treatment strategies, including drug delivery and regeneration approaches, provide a useful experimental model for the evaluation of future periodontal therapies. Recently, emerging advanced biomaterials including hydrogels, films, micro/nanofibers and particles, hold great potential to be utilized as cell/drug carriers for local drug delivery and biomimetic scaffolds for future regeneration therapies. In this review, first, we desc

Mechanical Forces Exacerbate Periodontal Defects in Bsp-null Mice.

Bone sialoprotein (BSP) is an acidic phosphoprotein with collagen-binding, cell attachment, and hydroxyapatite-nucleating properties. BSP expression in mineralized tissues is upregulated at onset of mineralization. Bsp-null (Bsp(-/-)) mice exhibit reductions in bone mineral density, bone turnover, osteoclast activation, and impaired bone healing. Furthermore, Bsp(-/-) mice have marked periodontal tissue breakdown, with a lack of acellular cementum leading to periodontal ligament detachment, extensive alveolar bone and tooth root resorption, and incisor malocclusion. We hypothesized that altere

A biomechanical analysis of applied pinch force during periodontal scaling.

One of the factors associated with the high prevalence of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, among dental practitioners is the repeated high pinch force applied during periodontal scaling. The goal of this study was to determine the relationship between the pinch force applied during periodontal scaling and the forces generated at the tip of the tool. A linear biomechanical model that incorporated tool reaction forces and a calculated safety margin was created to predict the pinch force applied by experienced and inexperienced dentists during periodontal

[Changes of the periodontal vascular network, periodontal fiber and alveolar bone incident to tooth extrusion].

During the application of orthodontic force to a tooth, the surrounding tissues undergo changes of bone resorption and apposition, thereby resulting in tooth movement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interrelationship between alveolar bone changes and the periodontal vascular network caused by extrusive orthodontic force using a scanning electron microscopy. Extrusive orthodontic force was applied to the mandibular 2nd and 3rd premolars of adult dogs. At the completion of the loading process, the inferior alveolar arteries were injected with a low viscosity MMA resin (Mercox).

Infection and periodontal diseases.

Contemporary hypotheses that consider the severe forms of periodontal disease to be infections caused by site-specific microbes fail to satisfactorily explain the epidemiologic, anthropologic, and clinical features of periodontal diseases. The microbes that have been designated as periodontopathogens are commensal bacteria present in periodontal health and disease. Association of specific bacteria with various disease forms has been established, but association is confused with causation. None of the periodontal diseases can be transmitted between individuals or between diseased and healthy si
