BACKGROUND: Peritoneal tuberculosis is an important problem in regions of the world where tuberculosis is still prevalent (Chest 1991; 99:1134). Atypical presentations such as portal vein thrombosis can delay diagnosis or result in misdiagnosis (Gut 1990; 31:1130, Acta ClinBelg 2012; 67(2):137-9, J Cytol Histol 2014; 5:278, Digestive Diseases and Sciences 1991; 36(1):112-115). A high index of suspicion is required for the diagnosis of peritoneal tuberculosis, as the analysis of peritoneal fluid for tuberculous bacillus is often ineffective, and may increase mortality due to delayed diagnosis.

Even in developed countries, tuberculosis still contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality. The most frequent causative agent is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, while infections due to other mycobacterial species are usually associated with immunocompromised patients. In the following, we describe the case of a previously healthy man who underwent laparotomy for suspected adrenal carcinoma. Peritoneal "cancerous nodules" turned out to be tuberculous granulomas. After surgery the patient developed a protracted septic shock and died 6 days after surgery. Isolation and identification of the

Results of surgical treatment of 31 patients with complicated forms of abdominal tuberculosis treated in 2001-2003 were analyzed. Before 2003 surgery was mainly palliative and managed by suturing of perforated ulcers or economic resection of the small intestine (group 1--17 patients) was made. Since 2003 radical right-sided hemi-colectomies with removal of caseous mesenterial lymph nodes is used (group 2--14 patients). Peritoneal lavage with antituberculosis drugs was performed after surgery. From 17 patients of group 1--12 died, from 14 patients of group 2--5. It is concluded that radical sur

Patients with chronic kidney disease have impaired immunity that increases their risk of infection. Increased incidence of mycobacterial infections, in particular Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is described in patients undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis as well as after kidney transplantation in low-prevalence and high-prevalence settings. Diagnosis of this infection can be challenging because of atypical presentations that may lead to treatment delay and, consequently, increased mortality; however, recent advances in molecular testing have improved diagnostic accuracy. It is imperat

Computed tomographic scans were reviewed in 46 patients with documented omental pathology to analyze the radiographic characteristics of benign and malignant disease. The normal omentum is identified on CT of the abdomen as a homogeneous fat density anterior to the transverse colon. Four distinct patterns of omental pathology were identified: (a) omental caking, (b) finely infiltrated fat with a "smudged" appearance, (c) cystic masses, and (d) discrete nodules. The smudged pattern of omental pathology was identified most frequently; it was present in 20 to 39 patients with malignant disease an

Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is the most frequently performed procedure in patients with hydrocephalus, but can cause seri¬ous complications. Shunt fractures, is a rare complication of VP shunt and can be damage for patient. The question of whether asymptomatic patients should or should not be operated on remains to be answered. The authors report a case of a pediatric patient who had an asymptomatic shunt fracture with a history of tuberculous menin¬goencephalitis (TBM). We report the case of a 7-year-old girl with a shunt fracture and a history of hydrocephalus due to TBM. She presented t

Tuberculosis is a top 10 leading cause of death worldwide. Lungs are primarily involved organs in tuberculosis. The rest of cases are extrapulmonary tuberculosis (14% reported in 2017). Extrapulmonary tuberculosis always presents with non-specific symptoms, thus at risk of delay diagnosis and management. In genitourinary tuberculosis, kidney alone and kidney with urinary bladder or ureter is affected in more than 70% of cases. The ureter and urinary bladder infections are almost always secondary to tuberculous involvement of the kidney. Bacilli haematogenic spreading is a known transmission pa

BACKGROUND: Enterobius vermicularis in an ectopic location usually represents an incidental finding in tissue specimens in a patient without symptoms. However, the parasite can lead to inflammation and symptoms in rare cases.
CASE: A 36-year-old woman had an abdominal hysterectomy for menorrhagia, dyspareunia, and lower abdominal pain. Two small nodules from the posterior aspect of the left broad ligament as well as the uterus were sent for histologic examination. The pathologic findings confirmed the diagnosis of "granulomatous peritoneal nodules due to E. vermicularis." Within the nodules w

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Abdominal tuberculosis (TB) is a rare manifestation of extrapulmonary TB. This disease entity can be overlooked, and its early diagnosis is difficult because of its variable manifestations and lack of specific symptoms.
METHODS: The clinical and diagnostic features, treatment, and outcome of patients with abdominal TB at a major hospital in southeastern Taiwan from January 1987 to December 2006 were investigated.
RESULTS: Twenty-one patients with abdominal TB identified during the 20-year period were included. A predominance of male (13/21, 61.9%) and Taiwanese aborigine

Accelerated malignant hypertension frequently manifests as multiple organ dysfunctions. However, persistent symptoms despite appropriate antihypertensive therapy warrant investigation of concurrent pathologies, particularly in patients with risk factors for opportunistic infections. A 57-year-old woman with untreated hypertension presented in August 2024, with markedly elevated blood pressure (208/122 mmHg), systolic dysfunction (ejection fraction, 42.5%) and acute kidney injury (creatinine 4.74 mg/dl). Accelerated malignant hypertension with multiple organ damage was diagnosed based on these

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis is a major health problem worldwide. Sudan has high burden of tuberculosis (TB) with a prevalence of 209 cases per 100,000 of the population and it is commonly presented with pulmonary disease but involvement of the gastrointestinal tract is not uncommon. Abdominal tuberculosis comprises about 1-3 % of all cases of tuberculosis and about 12% of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. It involves the ileocecal region, but involvement of stomach and duodenum are rare sites. Here we present an unusual case of gastric outlet obstruction due to gastric tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a multisystem infectious disease with both pulmonary and extrapulmonary manifestations. TB can also induce a hypercoagulable state, setting off a cascade of changes in the body, including systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and abnormalities in the coagulation and fibrinolytic pathways. Collectively, these factors significantly increase the risk of venous thromboembolism, such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. These complications can worsen the overall disease course and complicate TB management. We report the case of a 27-year-old man presenting

A retrospective study of genital tuberculosis in women attending the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology between January 1986 and December 1997 revealed 11 patients with a mean age of 38 years (range 23-77). Two patients had genital tuberculosis and tuberculous peritonitis. The incidence was 0.01 per cent of outpatients and 0.05 per cent of inpatients. Eight cases occurred during the last six years. Although the incidence was quite low, a rising trend was observed. Of the clinical features, infertility was the commonest initial symptom (3 cases). The most common site of infection was the e

Peritoneal tuberculosis (TB) is a rare extrapulmonary infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis It is mainly found in countries with a high burden of TB, so travelling from an endemic area should raise suspicion. Although it is a well-recognised disease, it remains a challenge due to its difficult clinical and microbiological diagnosis. This can lead to a delay, both in diagnosis and treatment with serious prognostic implications. We describe the case of a woman in her mid-50s who presented with fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, breathlessness, anorexia and weight loss. On physical examina

Broadening of bacteriological testing for tubercle bacilli presence concerns patients with chronic cough treated in out-patients clinics and in hospital wards excluding tuberculosis control wards. Bacteriological tests have been carried out in tuberculosis laboratories as ordered by doctors of out-patient clinics and hospitals. From 05.11.1993 to 30.09.1994, 3917 tests were carried out on various specimens supplied to laboratories: sputum, urine, pleural fluid, peritoneal fluid, pus from lymph nodes. In 60 specimens positive results were obtained with the use of direct method or the mycobacter

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) is challenging due to the low diagnostic sensitivity of current methods. This study aimed to assess the clinical characteristics and diagnosis of ITB at our tertiary referral center, and to explore improved methods of ITB diagnosis.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 177 patients diagnosed with ITB at Siriraj Hospital (Bangkok, Thailand) during 2009-2020.
RESULTS: The mean age was 49 years, 55.4% were male, and 42.9% were immunocompromised. Most diagnoses (108/177) were made via colonoscopy; 12 patients required more than one colon

Peritoneal tuberculosis (TB) is similar to ovarian cancers with respect to clinical, radiological laboratory findings. In this report, we present 10 TB cases with malignity pre-diagnosis based on the presence of ascites, pelvic mass, abdominal lymph nodes and elevated Ca125. The mean age of the cases was 29 +/- 14.4 years (18-63). Eight cases were associated with ascites, and the mean adenosine deaminase (ADA) value in ascitic fluid was 130.37 +/- 92.2. All cases had elevated levels of serum Ca125. In 6 cases, we identified lung pathologies based on chest radiography. Diagnoses were made based

Chronic abdominal pains caused by peritoneal tuberculosis - two case reports. The diagnosis of a peritoneal tuberculosis could be a demanding task for even an experienced Physician, because of the unspecific symptoms. We report on two patients, who as a result of therapy refractory chronic abdominal pains, weight loss and ascites were admitted to our hospital. The excisional biopsy taken from the peritoneum and the omentum major during an exploratory laparotomy resulted in the histopathologic diagnosis of peritoneal tuberculosis being made. Both patients were given tuberculostatic therapy with

BACKGROUND: Each year, 20-25 Norwegian children below the age of 18 are diagnosed with tuberculosis in Norway.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: As a demonstration of various difficulties in the work-up and diagnosis of tuberculosis, we present eight infected children aged 15 months to 10 years.
RESULTS: Children often contract the infection from adults and may develop serious manifestations including miliary tuberculosis and meningitis. The symptoms are often not specific and tuberculosis may be mistaken for other diseases. Delay and inappropriate diagnostics may have deleterious consequences.
