BACKGROUND: Scabies is an itchy, parasitic infection of the skin. Recent reports indicate there is a decreasing efficacy of the standard treatment of choice, topical 5% permethrin cream.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the comparative efficacy, safety and tolerability of topical benzyl benzoate (BB) with oral ivermectin in the treatment of scabies.
METHODS: Patients with dermoscopy-verified scabies visiting the dermatologic outpatient clinic were assessed for enrolment in the study. In total, 224 patients were enrolled and sequentially randomized into two equally sized groups. Group A received topica…

Bed bug repellents should not only prevent humans from being bitten but impede an infestation of personal belongings. Only a few test proposals for evaluating the efficacy of repellents against bed bugs have been published so far. In the present study, two test systems were assessed for efficacy testing with five potential bed bug repellents (cinnamon oil, icaridin, N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET), permethrin, and margosa extract). The first test setup was a harborage choice test system that consisted of a crystallizing dish with a treated and an untreated harborage. Sixty minutes and 24 …

Transmission of the mite Sarcoptes scabiei generally occurs by protracted direct body contact; although in crusted scabies, transmission also occurs via infected clothing or bedding. Diagnosis is usually clinical and topical antiscabietics are the mainstay of treatment. Oral ivermectin is not licensed in most countries, but may have a role in certain patients. Treatment of sexual contacts is indicated.

Pediculosis capitis, or head lice, is a common infestation among children worldwide. Multiple therapies exist for the treatment of this condition, including topical pediculicides and oral medications. When used in combination with environmental decontamination, these drugs can be very effective in eradicating head lice infestation without significant adverse events. The present study discusses the use of available over-the-counter and prescription treatments, including pyrethroids and permethrin, lindane, malathion, ivermectin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, in the treatment of head lice.

Scabies is a common skin condition, which is accompanied by severe itching and a high degree of contagiousness. Rapid diagnosis and adequate treatment for the patient and his contacts is therefore important. Recognizing scabies is not always easy. Patients may present with atypical skin lesions. Persistent itching, more intense at night, and itching in relatives can then lead to the clinical (probable) diagnosis. Demonstration of the mite and/or eggs in the skin can confirm the diagnosis, either by dermatoscopy or direct microscopy of skin scrapings. Treatment consists of applying permethrin c…

Scabies, which is among the most prevalent diseases worldwide, is becoming more frequent in Spain. The problems of this epidemic can be explained by several factors: improper application or prescription of treatments, resistance or reduced sensitivity to topical treatments, and poor understanding of the parasite and contagion. We require a new evidence-based approach to therapy that takes these problems into consideration. If symptoms persist after proper treatment, it is important to identify the reason for failure and standardize our approach. In refractory cases, the prescriber should prior

Use of agrochemicals, including insecticides, is vital to food production and predicted to increase 2-5 fold by 2050. Previous studies have … d study to determine the relative toxicities of three pyrethroid (esfenvalerate, λ-cyhalothrin, and permethrin) and three organophosphate (chlorpyrifos, malathion, and terbufos) insecticides to Macrobrachium prawns. In the lab, pyrethroids were consistently several orders of magnitude more toxic than organophosphate insecticides, and more likely to runoff fi …

Scabies. Scabies is a parasitic skin disease specific to humans caused by a microscopic mite, Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. Scabies is a common contagious disease, with a prevalence that is likely to be on rise, causing an important public health burden worldwide. Scabies is often considered as a benign disease, but its morbidity is actually overlooked and probably underestimated, especially in tropical countries. Scabies morbidity is mainly caused by associated bacterial infections. Scabies is transmitted from one person to another by direct and prolonged skin-to-skin contact. Less often, s

Prothrin, a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, was synthesized from the biomass-derived platform chemical 5-(chloromethyl)furfural in six steps and overall 65% yield. Two structural analogues of prothrin were also prepared following the same synthetic approach. Preliminary testing of these furan-based pyrethroids against the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti indicates promising insecticidal activities.

Scabies is a common contagious parasitic dermatosis. Transmission of the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis generally occurs by skin-to-skin contact, but with crusted scabies it may also occur through fomites, such as infected clothing or bedding. Diagnosis is usually clinical. A 2010 updated Cochrane review concluded that management of scabies is based on topical scabicides, mainly 5% permethrin. However, oral ivermectin, although not licensed in many countries, may be useful, particularly for patients who cannot tolerate or comply with topical therapy and in institutional scabies epidemics. …
