Internet and smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment and personalized advice (PROfeel) in adolescents with chronic conditions: A feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: Growing up with a chronic disease comes with challenges, such as coping with fatigue. Many adolescents are severely fatigued, though its associated factors exhibit considerable interpersonal and longitudinal variation. We assessed whether PROfeel, a combination of a smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA) method using the internet, followed by a face-to-face dialogue and personalized advice for improvement of symptoms or tailor treatment based on a dynamic network analysis report, was feasible and useful. STUDY DESIGN: Feasibility study in fatigued outpatient adolesc

Validation of the interview-based life-space assessment in institutionalized settings (LSA-IS) for older persons with and without cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Self-reported life-space assessment methods so far focus on community-dwelling persons, with a lack of validated assessment methods for institutionalized settings. This study evaluated construct validity, test-retest reliability, sensitivity to change, and feasibility of a new Life-Space Assessment for Institutionalized Settings (LSA-IS) in geriatric patients. METHODS: Psychometric properties of the LSA-IS in 119 hospitalized geriatric patients (83.0 ± 6.2 years) with and without cognitive impairment (CI) [Mini-Mental State Examination: 22.4 ± 4.9 scores] were evaluated within a c

Assessing personal noise exposure and its relationship with mental health in Beijing based on individuals' space-time behavior.

BACKGROUND: Most prior studies adopted a static residence-based approach in the assessment of noise exposure, which may lead to biased exposure estimates and misleading findings in noise-health relationships. Relatively little is known about personal noise exposure based on individuals' space-time behavior and its effect on mental health. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to analyze and geo-visualize personal exposure to noise in various microenvironments based on individuals' space-time trajectories at a very fine resolution and to further investigate the relationships between mental health and pe

Two case reports of fetal alcohol syndrome: broadening into the spectrum of cardiac disease to personalize and to improve clinical assessment.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) refers to a broad spectrum of disabilities, in infants and children, resulting from moderate to excessive prenatal alcohol exposure. Significant associations with alcohol exposure were already reported with congenital structural heart defects: i.e. ventricular septal defects, atrial septal defects, conotruncal defects. CASES PRESENTATION: We describe two cases of children with FASD, both admitted to the Center for Rare Diseases and Birth Defects of Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli, in whom asymptomatic cardiac rhythm alterations wer

Clinical measures are feasible and sensitive to assess balance and gait capacities in older persons with mild to moderate Intellectual Disabilities.

Mobility limitations are common in persons with Intellectual Disabilities (ID). Differences in balance and gait capacities between persons with ID and controls have mainly been demonstrated by instrumented assessments (e.g. posturography and gait analysis), which require sophisticated and expensive equipment such as force plates or a 3D motion analysis system. Most physicians and allied healthcare professionals working with persons with ID do not have such equipment at their disposal, so they must rely on clinical tests to determine whether balance and gait are affected. The aim of this study

Cognitive-behavioral treatment for chronic nightmares in trauma-exposed persons: assessing physiological reactions to nightmare-related fear.

Cognitive-behavioral treatments (CBTs) that target nightmares are efficacious for ameliorating self-reported sleep problems and psychological distress. However, it is important to determine whether these treatments influence objective markers of nightmare-related fear, because fear and concomitant physiological responses could promote nightmare chronicity and sleep disturbance. This randomized, controlled study (N=40) assessed physiological (skin conductance, heart rate, facial electromyogram) and subjective (displeasure, fear, anger, sadness, arousal) reactions to personally relevant nightmar

[Value of diagnostic imaging for assessment of unsuccessful treatment of children with neoplastic diseases. Introductory comments based on personal examinations].

Diagnostic imaging has determined clinical application depending on kind of pathology and anatomical localisation. This is a precise and fine instrument for monitoring effects of treatment in childhood malignant tumours. Authors demonstrate examples of cases in which diagnostic imaging was the only method which revealed a relapse in situ, progression during chemotherapy or clinically unsuspected dissemination of tumours after many years.

Discrimination of former depressed patients from healthy volunteers on the basis of stable personality traits assessed by means of KSP.

A total of 208 former depressed patients were investigated by means of the personality inventory KSP and compared to 75 healthy volunteers who had never had an affective episode. By means of discriminant analysis 81.3% of the subjects could be correctly classified as former depressed patients or healthy volunteers. When patients in the diagnostic subgroups, unipolars, bipolars, patients with neurotic-reactive depressions and patients with unspecified depressions were compared to healthy volunteers, 85.4%, 83.0%, 84.2% and 86.4% respectively could be correctly classified. MT-VOICE: A Community-Engaged Qualitative Study to Develop a Person-Centered Music Therapy Assessment for Older Adults.

Assessment is fundamental to music therapy, underpinning effective therapeutic planning. Despite existing tools for older adults, there remains a need for holistic, strengths-based, music and person-centered assessments that include older adults' perspectives. This article reports on phase one of a four-phase study. Phase 1 evaluated and refined the Music Therapy Assessment for Older Adults, Revision One (MTAOA-R1) as part of the development of a new assessment tool, the MT-VOICE (Music Therapy Assessment for Older Adults-Valuing Older Adults through Comprehensive Assessment). Integrated assessment of dermal and inhalation exposure to chlorinated paraffins using personal silicone wristbands and measurement of skin contamination.

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs), specifically short-chain (SCCPs) and medium-chain (MCCPs), are widely used industrial chemicals of concern due to persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. This study assessed integrated personal exposure (dermal and inhalation) to SCCPs and MCCPs using silicone wristbands (SWBs) and hand wipes (HWs) in 20 volunteers over five days. Participants wore two SWBs simultaneously: a non-removable wristband (N) worn continuously and a removable wristband (R) taken off during sleep and hygiene. SCCPs and MCCPs were detected in all SWBs. Median concentrations in SWBs(N) w
