Gender differences in anxiety-related traits in patients with panic disorder.

This study examined gender differences in anxiety-related personality traits in patients with panic disorder with or without agoraphobia (PD+/-AG). Outpatients (101 total) with SCID confirmed PD+/-AG completed the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI), the Trait form of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T), the NEO Personality Inventory Revised (NEO PI-R), and the Retrospective Self-Report of Inhibition (RSRI) as part of their assessment. Significant gender differences were not detected for the total ASI scores. Females scored significantly higher than males on the Physical Concerns subscale o…

The results were compared to a control series comprising 200 men and 200 women drawn from the general population. RESULTS: The patients with treated WD scored significantly lower than the healthy controls on aggressivity-hostility-related scales and

Personality variables involved in chronic prostatitis.

Psychologic factors have been considered to play an important role in the etiology of chronic prostatitis. Earlier studies are often based on a psychoanalytical perspective and seldomly used quantitative approaches. In the present study quantitative tests are used to investigate personality variables which are suggested in the literature as underlying chronic prostatitis. A group of 50 chronic prostatitis patients was compared with a group of 50 patients seen for a vasectomy. Psychologic measures were taken by means of a personality inventory (NVM, Dutch short form of the MMPI), a symptom chec…

An attempt to understand the paradox of anorexia nervosa without drive for thinness.

The "atypical" subgroup of women with anorexia nervosa not characterized by drive for thinness (DT) was studied. The study group comprised 151 anorectic patients (restrictor anorectics [AN-R], n=74; binge-purging anorectics [AN-BP], n=77). Subjects completed the following self-administered questionnaires: Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2), Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Patients were subdivided into three groups on the basis of body mass index (BMI) and DT score: AN-I with a BMI<15 and DT<7 (n=24

Psychopathic personality traits are linked to reduced false memories for negative events.

Individuals scoring high on psychopathic personality traits process emotional material to a different extent than individuals with few psychopathic traits. Evidence exists that these individuals have impaired emotional memory. The question arises whether this emotional memory impairment has ramifications for the production of emotional false memories. In the present study, we investigated the production of false and true memories for emotional events in a community sample (N = 120) of individuals varying in psychopathic traits (evaluated with the Psychopathic Personality Inventory-Revised [PPI…

Associations between Facets and Aspects of Big Five Personality and Affective Disorders:A Systematic Review and Best Evidence Synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Big Five personality traits correlate with affective disorders, with neuroticism considered a risk factor, and conscientiousness and extroversion considered protective factors. However, the relationships between affective disorders and lower-order personality facets and aspects are less clear. METHOD: A systematic review was carried out to identify studies measuring associations between lower-order personality constructs and affective disorders. Big Five facets were measured using the NEO-PI-R, and aspects using the BFAS. PsycINFO, EMBASE, MedLine and OpenGrey were searched from J

A new measure of perfectionism: the Perfectionism Inventory.

In this investigation, we produced a new 8-scale measure of perfectionism called the Perfectionism Inventory (PI) that is designed to capture the important constructs provided by 2 existing Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS; Frost, Marten, Lahart, & Rosenblate, 1990; Hewitt & Flett, 1991b) measures, along with new perfectionism scales. In the results from 3 studies, we describe scale development, scale psychometric properties, and criterion-related validity evidence for the 8 PI scales: Concern Over Mistakes, High Standards for Others, Need for Approval, Organization, Parental Pressure

Personality traits and psychological factors in voice pathology: a foundation for future research.

It has been argued that personality, emotions, and psychological problems contribute to or are primary causes of voice disorders and that voice disorders in turn create psychological problems and personality effects. This article (a) briefly reviews the literature surrounding the role of psychological and personality processes in individuals with functional dysphonia (FD), vocal nodules (VN), and spasmodic dysphonia (SD); (b) provides an overview of recent concepts in personality and trait structure; and (c) summarizes the fundamental tenets of a theoretical synthesis proposed by Roy and Bless

Resilience Phenotypes and Psychological Functioning among Individuals with Opioid Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a heterogeneous disorder. However, there is a lack of deep phenotyping investigations focusing on important psychological constructs such as resilience that may impact OUD. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between trait resilience and the five-factor model of personality (FFM) among individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). We also explored whether the FFM and trait resilience form specific phenotypes associated with psychological functioning. METHODS: This secondary analysis of an epigenetic study included participants of Afri

Pathways From Early-Life SES to Dementia Risk in Old Age: The Role of Personality.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the association between childhood socioeconomic status (cSES) and risk of cognitive impairment in older adulthood, and whether the Five-Factor Model personality traits mediated this association. METHODS: A sample of 9,995 participants (mean age = 67.01 years) from the Health and Retirement Study were followed up every 2 years from 2006 to 2018. cSES was tested as a predictor of risk of dementia and risk of cognitive impairment not dementia (CIND). Personality was tested as a mediator of these associations. Models were adjusted for age, gender, ethnicity, ra

Narcissism and the DSM-5 alternative model of personality disorder.

In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Section III alternative model of personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is assessed via required elevations on 2 of 4 Criterion A domains of personality dysfunction (i.e., self-direction, identity, empathy, intimacy) and 2 personality traits (Criterion B: attention seeking and grandiosity). Evidence to date suggests that these 2 traits successfully account for variance in scores in traditionally (i.e., Section II) assessed NPD and grandiose narcissism but leave substantial variance unaccounted f

Progress but no cigar: Comment on Bach and Tracy (2022).

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition alternative model of personality disorder (AMPD) introduced innovations that are likely to be enduring features of a scientific classification of personality disorder: (a) an explicit definition of personality disorder, (b) a description of levels of severity, (c) a dimensional model of individual differences, and (d) the important principle that classifications should use and be consistent with the findings of normal personality science. Bach and Tracy's review of evidence of the clinical utility of the alternative model
