Effects of deep brain stimulation on personality and executive function in Parkinson's disease.

UNLABELLED: Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with cognitive and personality changes that extend beyond its characteristic motor symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on executive function (EF) and personality (The Five-Factor Model - FFM) in PD patients, comparing outcomes between those treated solely with medication and those receiving both medication and STN-DBS. METHODS: A total of 69 participants were divided into three groups: DBS, medication, and control. Evaluations included inventories, tests, and scales, with result

Personality traits in childhood and adolescent headache.

We evaluate personality traits, anxiety and depression in a population of paediatric and adolescent patients, correlating personality characteristics with headache and sociodemographic variables. The clinical features of headache include specific personality traits. We report a clinical study of 57 patients (age 8-18 years), divided up as follows: 12 migraine with aura, 29 migraine without aura and 16 tension-type headache. One of Cattel's tests was administered to every patient; the Children's Depression Inventory test was administered to 53 patients and the Test Anxiety Inventory test to 43

The role of cluster B and C personality disturbance in the course of depression: a prospective study.

The association between personality disturbance and depression has been noted consistently. Prospective tests of personality's impact on the course of depression, however, are lacking. In a sample of 159 undergraduates who experienced at least one prospective depressive episode, dimensional scores for clusters B and C personality disturbance were examined as prospective predictors of four indicators of the course of depression: severity, episode duration, symptomatic chronicity and number of episodes. Cluster C personality disturbance, characterized by anxious and fearful features, predicted d

Can personality traits predict the future development of heart disease in hospitalized psychiatric veterans?

OBJECTIVE: To examine which personality traits are associated with the new onset of chronic coronary heart disease (CHD) in psychiatric inpatients within 16 years after their initial evaluation. We theorized that personality measures of depression, anxiety, hostility, social isolation, and substance abuse would predict CHD development in psychiatric inpatients. METHOD: We used a longitudinal database of psychological test data from 349 Veterans first admitted to a psychiatric unit between October 1, 1983, and September 30, 1987. Veterans Affairs and national databases were assessed to determi

Introversion and Neuroticism in Akinetic-Rigid Parkinson's Disease: Association With Frontal-Executive Dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: Personality changes have often been reported among people with Parkinson's disease (PD); however, no studies have investigated the associations between personality traits, cognitive function, and specific motor symptoms. In this study, the investigators assessed whether particular personality traits were associated with specific motor subtypes of PD (e.g., tremor-dominant and akinetic-rigid phenotypes) and whether frontal-executive functions were associated with personality traits among patients with a specific motor phenotype. METHODS: Forty-one people with PD and 40 healthy contr

Quantifying internal and external heterogeneous effects of bus drivers' personality traits and driving behavior on bus crashes: Insights from questionnaires and NDS data.

Existing studies about bus accident analysis have examined the impacts of internal or external heterogeneity from multiple perspectives, highlighting the multifaceted nature of accident risk factors. However, there are core limitations still to be addressed: reliance on single-type physiological, psychological or driving behavior data, neglecting group classification stability in accident heterogeneity analysis, and insufficient guidance for bus on-board Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and Driver State Monitoring System (DSM) applications, resulting in incomplete crash mechanism inter

Psychotic-like experiences in young offenders: Prevalence, psychiatric comorbidity and personality traits.

Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) i.e., subthreshold psychotic symptoms, which include hallucinatory experiences (HE) and delusional beliefs (DB) are common in adolescents in the general population. However, much less is known about their occurrence in young offenders. To address this deficit, the current study examined PLEs and their associated features in a sample of young offenders in Russia. A semi-structured psychiatric interview (the K-SADS-PL) and self-reports were used to assess the prevalence of PLEs, psychopathology and personality traits in 370 incarcerated male young offenders (Mea

[Relation between personality and spastic angina].

The personalities of 60 patients suffering from episodes of retrosternal pain were evaluated by means of psychological tests ( Cattel 's questionnaire and Eysenck's personality inventory) and semi-directive interviews. The patients fell into three groups: group I patients (n = 21) had atheromatous lesions of the coronary arteries detected at angiography; group II patients (n = 19) had normal or subnormal coronary arteries, but angiography demonstrated arterial spasm; group III patients (n = 20) had angiographically normal coronary arteries without spasm. A statistically significant difference

Pathways of personality and learning risk for addictive behaviors: A systematic review of mediational research on the acquired preparedness model.

OBJECTIVE: The Acquired Preparedness (AP) model proposes that impulsive personality traits predispose some individuals to learn certain behavior-outcome associations (expectancies), and that these expectancies in turn influence the escalation of risky behaviors. This theory has been applied to the development of behaviors such as drinking, drug use, gambling, and disordered eating. In the current study, we aimed to summarize empirical tests of this model over the 20 years since it was proposed. METHOD: We used a descriptive approach to summarize tests of mediation across 50 studies involving

Are people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) particularly nice? An international online case-control study of the Big Five personality factors.

BACKGROUND: Many people with ALS have been suggested to have a "nice" personality, but most ALS personality studies to date have had limited numbers of participants and have not taken into account personality differences between genders. We used Big Five Inventory data obtained from an online questionnaire looking for risk factors for ALS to investigate personality traits in large numbers of people with ALS and controls. METHODS: A total of 741 questionnaire respondents aged 40 years and over indicated the extent to which they agreed with each of the 44 Big Five Inventory statements. Responde

Clinical and Criminal Characteristics of Patients With Schizophrenia Exhibiting Homicidal and Non-Homicidal Behavior: A Comparative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Public concern regarding homicides committed by individuals with schizophrenia has intensified in recent years. Although the overall crime rate in this population is not significantly higher than that of the general population, certain subgroups may present an elevated homicide risk. Identifying associated risk factors and distinguishing between impulsive and premeditated violence are crucial for developing effective forensic psychiatric assessment and prevention strategies. METHODS: Medical records of patients with schizophrenia admitted to the National Forensic Hospital in Korea

BDNF Haplotype and Personality Traits May Influence the Development of Alcohol Use Disorder in the Han Chinese Population.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and personality traits play a crucial role in the development of alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, the relationship between the BDNF gene, personality and AUD remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the role of BDNF gene variants, personality traits and impulsivity in both the presence of AUD and the age of onset of alcohol dependence. We also examined the interaction between BDNF gene variants and personality traits among individuals with AUD. Eleven polymorphisms encompassing the whole BDNF gene region were genotyped. The Tridimensional Person
