Childhood sexual abuse predicts poor outcome seven years after parasuicide.

BACKGROUND: There is substantial empirical research linking borderline personality disorder with prolonged mental instability and recurrent suicidality. At the same time, a growing body of observations links borderline personality disorder to sexual abuse and other forms of abuse and trauma in childhood. The aim of this study was to investigate among patients admitted for parasuicide the predictive value for outcome 7 years after the parasuicide of a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder compared to the predictive value of a history of childhood sexual abuse. METHODS: Semi-structured i

Using machine learning modeling to identify childhood abuse victims on the basis of personality inventory responses.

Trauma is very common and associated with significant co-morbidity world-wide, particularly PTSD and frequently other mental health disorders. However, it can be challenging to identify victims of abuse as self-reports can be difficult to elicit due to emotional distress. Better confirmation of a history of significant mistreatment can assist significantly in treatment planning. We evaluate an alternate approach based on machine-learning techniques applied to personality inventory data (Minnesota Personality Inventory, Adolescent Version; MMPI-A) obtained concurrently to examine convergence wi

Assessing concordance of HIV risk behaviors collected by different surveillance systems.

OBJECTIVES: Assess concordance of assigned transmission category between National HIV Surveillance System (NHSS) and Medical Monitoring Project (MMP); assess persistence of behaviors by comparing transmission category to current behavior. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of HIV surveillance data. METHODS: For 4034 participants in the 2016 MMP cycle, transmission category was assigned in NHSS and MMP by applying a hierarchy to acquisition risk behaviors and selecting the most likely risk behavior that led to HIV acquisition. We assessed concordance of transmission category between systems, the

Frequency of nasopharyngeal swab collection and positivity for SARS-CoV-2 infection in the population of the Italian province of Udine with and without chronic conditions.

Severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with comorbidities. However, no information is available on the frequency of nasopharyngeal swab collection and positivity depending on comorbidities. Using a cross-sectional design, we assessed the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 tests and of positivity in the general population of the 530,000-inhabitant Italian province of Udine and in subgroups affected by chronic conditions in the first weeks of SARS-CoV-2 epidemic. Anonymous health databases were used as source of information to identify persons with 14 chronic conditions. From laboratory records we

Navigating an unfamiliar world: how parents of young people who self-harm experience support and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm in young people is a common reason for contact with clinical services. However, there is little research focusing on parents' perspectives of care following self-harm. The aim of this study was to explore parents' experiences of treatment and support for the young person and for themselves. METHODS: A qualitative design was used to explore parents' perspectives. Semi-structured narrative interviews were conducted across the UK with 37 parents of young people who had self-harmed. Thematic analysis was undertaken to identify themes relating to how parents experienced the h

Relationship between the calibre of carotid arteries and the configuration of the circle of Willis in healthy older persons.

AIM: Recent papers have pointed out that the severity of brain damage that follows carotid occlusion is largely influenced by the state of integrity and functionality of the circle of Willis. In spite of this, duplex scanning investigation of carotid arteries has traditionally been focused on the assessment of the degree of the stenosis, while other features, such as the calibre of carotid arteries and their possible asymmetry, have often been neglected. The aim of the present paper was to verify, in a cohort of older persons, whether, based on the calibre of internal carotid arteries and thei

Surveillance for pneumonic plague in the United States during an international emergency: a model for control of imported emerging diseases.

In September 1994, in response to a reported epidemic of plague in India, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) enhanced surveillance in the United States for imported pneumonic plague. Plague information materials were rapidly developed and distributed to U.S. public health officials by electronic mail, facsimile, and expedited publication. Information was also provided to medical practitioners and the public by recorded telephone messages and facsimile transmission. Existing quarantine protocols were modified to effect active surveillance for imported plague cases at U.S. airp

Lessons learned in a data linkage project on fatal drowning.

BACKGROUND: Drowning is the leading cause of death in US children 1-4 years old. The epidemiology of drowning at a regional level is understudied because no single data source provides complete information on persons who drown. Probabilistic data linkage is a novel way of studying the epidemiology of drowning. This study aimed to document the lessons learned during the linkage process. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of persons of all ages who died from unintentional drowning in metropolitan Houston from 2016 to 2022. We describe the lessons learned during the project planning and e

Voices that matter: A community-driven intervention framework for Black women who have experienced traumatic loss.

Although Black women face disproportionately high rates of gun violence and incarceration loss, there is a scarcity of culturally relevant interventions for this population. The aims of this study were to (a) examine the need for a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and evidence-based grief intervention and to (b) identify key program components and considerations. Using a community-based participatory research framework, co-collaborators interviewed and surveyed 13 Black women who experienced gun violence and/or incarceration loss. Thematic analysis of interview data confirmed a need for

Should genes for non-syndromic hearing loss be included in reproductive genetic carrier screening: Views of people with a personal or family experience of deafness.

Many commercial reproductive genetic carrier screening (RGCS) panels include genes associated with non-syndromic hearing loss (NSHL), however little is known about the general acceptability of their inclusion. Although some couples wish to avoid having a deaf child, there are effective interventions and supports available for deafness, and no consensus on whether it is appropriate to reproductively screen NSHL genes. This study explored views of people with personal experience of deafness regarding carrier screening for genes associated with NSHL. We interviewed 27 participants; 14 who identif

Evaluating international Haemophilia Joint Health Score (HJHS) results combined with expert opinion: Options for a shorter HJHS.

INTRODUCTION: The Hemophilia Joint Health Score (HJHS) was developed to detect early changes in joint health in children and adolescents with haemophilia. The HJHS is considered by some to be too time consuming for clinical use and this may limit broad adoption. AIM: This study was a first step to develop a shorter and/or more convenient version of the HJHS for the measurement of joint function in children and young adults with haemophilia, by combining real-life data and expert opinion. METHODS: A cross-sectional multicenter secondary analysis on pooled data of published studies using the H

Biographical information influences on facial attractiveness judgment.

In the realm of social cognition, facial perception is crucial, particularly in assessing facial attractiveness. This study investigated how biographical information impacts such evaluations. Two experiments were conducted: the first had participants rate 108 faces with and without biographical details, including occupation, psychiatric history, and politics. The second used fMRI to identify brain regions reacting differently with biographical information. Results showed that 31.48% of cases exhibited significant variations in facial evaluations when biographical information was introduced. Th

Severity Benchmarks for the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0) in Polish Adults.

Background/Objectives: The Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0) is a self-report screening measure of personality impairments according to the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders and the ICD-11 classification of personality disorders. Nevertheless, reliable cut-off scores that could help in clinical decision making are still lacking for many populations. The aim of this study was to develop severity benchmarks of the LPFS-BF 2.0 for a Polish population based on the item response theory (IRT) approach. Methods: A sample of Polish adults (n = 530) too

Informational needs of couples undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection with surgical sperm retrieval: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: Infertile couples consider patient information a very important dimension of patient-centred care. Although testicular sperm extraction (TESE) followed by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) has long been offered to infertile couples, little is known about couples' informational needs. The aim of this study was to identify the informational needs of couples undergoing TESE and ICSI, including information content and the channels providing the information as a first step to improve patient-centred care. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative study consisting of semi-structured

Genomic Context Differs Between Human Dilated Cardiomyopathy and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

Background Inherited cardiomyopathies display variable penetrance and expression, and a component of phenotypic variation is genetically determined. To evaluate the genetic contribution to this variable expression, we compared protein coding variation in the genomes of those with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Methods and Results Nonsynonymous single-nucleotide variants (nsSNVs) were ascertained using whole genome sequencing from familial cases of HCM (n=56) or DCM (n=70) and correlated with echocardiographic information. Focusing on nsSNVs in 102 genes lin

Risk of esophageal cancer in achalasia cardia: A meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The association between cancer of the esophagus and achalasia has long been recognized. However, it has also been recognized that cancers themselves can give rise to achalasia-like syndromes. The risk of developing cancer is also a factor in assessing whether there is a potential role for surveillance in this disease. This paper uses published work to form the basis for a meta-analysis of the risk of developing esophageal cancer among patients with pre-existing achalasia. METHODS: This paper considered cancer risk reported in a range of studies of achalasia published over a 50-y

Virtual Practice Facilitation and Implementation of Cardiovascular Quality Improvement Strategies in Primary Care Clinics: A Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Practice facilitation (or practice coaching) is a scientifically supported approach for improving evidence-based guideline adoption in primary care. Practice facilitation has historically occurred in person; however, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the adoption of many hybrid and virtual practice facilitation (VPF) projects. The impact of VPF on quality improvement (QI) implementation outcomes is unknown. The purpose of this study was to describe the relationship between VPF and implementation of 18 evidence-based QI strategies, based on a hybrid cardiovascular QI project in 49 primar
