BACKGROUND: Pain felt in an amputated limb is quite common. Phantom pain affects the lives of individuals in many ways and can negatively affect the holistic well-being of individuals. Distant Reiki can be used in the management of these problems.
AIM: This study was conducted to examine the effect of distant Reiki applied to individuals with extremity amputation on pain level and holistic well-being.
METHOD: This a quasi-experimental single group pre-test. Post-test design research was conducted between September 2022 and April 2023 and included 25 individuals with extremity amputation. The

Each year, 27.5% of the 150 000 people in the United States who require lower extremity amputation experience significant postoperative complications, including pain, infection, and need for reoperation. Postamputation pain, including RLP and PLP, is debilitating. While the causes of such pain remain unknown, neuroma formation following sensory nerve transection is believed to be a major contributor. Various techniques exist for management of a symptomatic neuroma, but few data exist on which technique is superior. Furthermore, there are few data on primary prevention of neuroma formation foll

BACKGROUND: Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) is growing in popularity; however, literature evaluating patient characteristics and outcome … rmed per limb overall. Average length of follow-up was 22.3 months. In three studies, patients with phantom limb pain undergoing delayed TMR were found to have significant or trending toward significant reduction in pain after TMR using numeric rating scale and patient-reported outcomes measurement information system scales. One article reported 9/10 patients …

OBJECTIVE: Current analgesic treatments for phantom pain are not optimal. One well-accepted yet limited nonpharmacological option is mirror therapy, which is thought to counterbalance abnormal plasticity. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is an emerging approach believed to affect the membrane potential and activity threshold of cortical neurons. tDCS analgesic effectiveness, however, is mild and short, rendering it a noneffective stand-alone treatment. This study aimed to assess if a combination of mirror therapy with tDCS results in a superior analgesic effect as compared with m

INTRODUCTION: Neuropathic pain is a complex and demanding medical condition that is often difficult to treat. Regardless of the cause, the impairment, lesion or damage to the nervous system can lead to neuropathic pain, such as phantom limb pain (PLP). No treatment has been found widely effective for PLP, but plasticity-guided therapies have shown the least severe side effects in comparison to pharmacological or surgical interventions. Phantom motor execution (PME) is a plasticity-guided intervention that has shown promising results in alleviating PLP. The potential mechanism underlying the ef…

INTRODUCTION: A major cause of morbidity in lower limb amputees is phantom limb pain (PLP) and residual limb pain (RLP). This study aimed to determine whether a variation of the surgical technique of inserting nerve endings into adjacent muscle bellies at the time of lower limb amputation can decrease the incidence and severity of PLP and RLP.
METHODS: Data were retrospectively collected from January 2015 to January 2021, including eight patients that underwent nerve insertion (NI) and 36 that received standard treatment. Primary outcomes included the 11-point Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for…

BACKGROUND: Interest in the pathophysiology and management of phantom smells has increased rapidly over the last decade. A PubMed search for the term "phantosmia" demonstrated a near-doubling of articles published on phantosmia within the past 7 years. We aimed to systematically review the literature on the management of phantosmia.
METHODS: The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases were searched for articles published since January 1990, using terms combined with pertinent Boolean search operators. We included articles evaluating management of phantosmia written in the English language, wit

A 43-year-old man had deafferentation pain in his right upper extremity secondary to brachial plexus avulsion from a traffic accident 23 years previously. On our initial examination, he had severe tingling pain with numbness in the right fingers rated 10 on the numerical rating scale. The body perception of the affected third and fourth fingers was distorted in the flexed position. Although he performed traditional mirror therapy (TMT) for 4 weeks in the same methods as seen in previous studies, he could not obtain willed motor imagery and pain-alleviation effect. Therefore, we modified the ta

Throughout the course of military history, soldiers have continued to sustain amputation injuries during war times and during peacetime and training missions. What has changed over time is the etiology of, indication for, and management of the amputations. Technology has advanced significantly, often with some military connection. More work still needs to be done, especially in the areas of greater prosthetic limb function and usage as well as phantom pain and sensation management. Collaborative efforts among physiatrists, surgeons, prosthetists, and therapists can only benefit the patient.

The role of cortical activity in generating and abolishing chronic pain is increasingly emphasized in the clinical community. Perhaps the most striking example of this is the maladaptive plasticity theory, according to which phantom pain arises from remapping of cortically neighbouring representations (lower face) into the territory of the missing hand following amputation. This theory has been extended to a wide range of chronic pain conditions, such as complex regional pain syndrome. Yet, despite its growing popularity, the evidence to support the maladaptive plasticity theory is largely bas

Visual symptomatology in childhood often presents diagnostic difficulties. Recurrent paroxysmal visual complaints, although typically associated with migraine, may also signal other disorders. We describe a 9-year-old partially sighted male with paroxysmal zoopsias resulting from Charles Bonnet syndrome. This condition is characterized by paroxysmal visual hallucinations occurring in patients with chronic visual impairment, akin to the phantom-limb phenomenon. This pediatric case is the fourth report of this condition. We have reviewed the other cases.

The most common reason for lower limb amputations in the UK is peripheral arterial disease. A thoughtful approach to surgery, with considera … ergy expenditure on walking is even greater. Management of post-amputation pain syndromes including phantom limb pain can prove challenging, although there are novel options for pain control. Long-term care of both the residual and contralateral limbs is paramount to reduce risk of further amputation surgery, and optimize longer term function and quality of li …

The loss of somatosensory feedback in transtibial amputees contributes to gait asymmetry, increased metabolic cost, higher fall risk, and de … iques. Invasive systems offer high-quality somatotopic mapping that improves embodiment and reduces phantom limb pain but are limited by surgical risks, long-term stability issues, and scalability concerns. Non-invasive systems, especially those utilizing vibrotactile feedback, have demonstrated measurable benefits, including a 41% increase in walking speed, f …

BACKGROUND: Amputation is a major life-changing event and is regarded as one of the loading causes of permanent disability. However, amputation often causes changes in painful and nonpainful sensory experiences. Pain after amputation has been shown to increase functional limitations caused by limb loss and lower quality of life.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the effect of pain on activity and participation in individuals with unilateral below-knee amputations according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.

Autologous fillet flaps are a common reconstructive option for large defects after forequarter amputation (FQA) due to advanced local malign … r contour reconstruction. Moreover, we performed TMR. In case of the need for free flap reconstruction after FQA, this review demonstrates the safety and advantage of osteomusculocutaneous fillet flaps. OBJECTIVE: To report an unusual disorder of body schema and its neurologic and neuropsychological correlates.
DESIGN AND METHODS: We describe a patient with a reduplicative phantom illusion of her lower limbs. Motor and sensory functions, as well as mental representation of body and space, were studied during the reduplication experience until its resolution.
SETTING: Clinical neurology department in a primary care hospital.
PATIENT: A 64-year-old, left-handed woman who experienced the uncontrollable and distressing feeling of having 4 legs, without delusional belief, after surgical removal
