Sergentomyia species identification and their screening for possible infection to Leishmania spp. in Kaleybar, East-Azerbaijan province, Iran.

Leishmaniasis is a protozoal and vector-borne disease. World health organization has considered the disease as a neglected tropical disease. Phlebotomus and Lutzumyia species (order: Diptera, family: Psychodidae) are human leishmaniasis vectors in new and old worlds. Sergentomyia spp. (Diptera, Psychodidae) are proven vectors of lizard leishmaniasis. Although some studies have identified human Leishmania parasites in Sergentomyia, their role in parasite circulation is unknown yet. Hence, the parasitological and molecular methods were used to study the possible Leishmania infection of Sergentom…

First report of Leishmania tropica from a classical focus of L. major in North-Sinai, Egypt.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is prevalent in the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula and previous research has consistently documented the etiologic ag … e cases each). Two wild-caught rodents (Gerbillus pyramidum floweri) were infected with L. tropica. Phlebotomus papatasi sand flies were found harboring L. major, however only non-infected individuals of Phlebotomus sergenti, a vector for L. tropica, were caught. Patients with L. tropica had not traveled from the region in over a year, suggesting these cases …

[Cutaneous leishmaniasis in the urban area of Sanliurfa (Turkey)].

In the leishmaniasis focus of Sanliurfa, south-east Turquey, phlebotomine sandflies catches in houses and stables seem to confirm the parasitological data with an urban cycle due to Leishmania tropica transmitted by Phlebotomus sergenti. The incidence could be reduce drastically by intradomiciliar and stables insecticide pulverisations.

[Interepidemic supervision of the leishmania focus of Keur Moussa (Thies, Senegal)].

A supervision of the focus of human cutaneous leishmaniasis of Keur Moussa has been carried out in 1988-1989 and in 1991-1992. Among the 13 species gathering the 10,144 phlebotomine sandflies trapped, two belong to genus Phlebotomus, the others to genus Sergentomyia. Phlebotomus duboscqi, that has been found out by Deded et al. in 1980 as the vector of this leishmaniasis in Senegal, is the most represented species after Sergentomyia schwetzi, with respectively 32.3 and 28.5% of the found during these two periods. It is twice more abundant and frequent in the monastery area than the religious o…

[The characteristics of the epidemic activation of a natural focus of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in places with a sympatric dissemination of Leishmania major, L. turanica and L. gerbilli].

In 1975-1978 and in 1985-1988 studies of species composition and number of Phlebotomus, R. opimus infestation with L. major, L. turanica and L. gerbilli as well as epidemic activity of the natural foci were performed in the Karshi steppe in Uzbekistan. Typical areas have been compared in the desert, oasis and desert land irrigated for cotton growing. A correlation has been established between the epidemic activity of the natural focus and the nature of epizootic development in R. opimus and species composition of vectors. On desert territories epizootic transmission throughout the whole season…

Co-circulation of Toscana virus and Leishmania infantum in a focus of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis from Central Tunisia.

In the Mediterranean basin, sand flies are vectors of Leishmania parasites and phleboviruses affecting humans and animals. In this study, we aimed to investigate phlebovirus and Leishmania parasites circulating in a focus of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) located in a highly irrigated area within the arid Central Tunisia, known mainly to be endemic for zoonotic cutaenous leishmaniasis (ZCL) caused Leishmania major and transmitted by Phlebotomus papatasi. Sand flies were collected using CDC light traps in the village of Saddaguia, an emergent focus of ZVL located in Central Tunisia durin…

Phlebotomine Sand Flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Iran and their Role on Leishmania Transmission.

Sand fly research has a long history in Iran beginning with the work of Adler, Theodor and Lourie in 1930 and followed by Mesghali's foundational taxonomic work on sand flies in 1943. Since then, research has been continued unabated throughout the country and official publications report the existence of at least 44 species of sand flies (26 of the genus Phlebotomus and 18 of genus Sergentomyia) in Iran. So far, seven Phlebotomus species and one Sergentomyia species have been collected and described by Iranian researchers for the first time. Natural promastigote infections have been repeatedly…

[Cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum MON-24 in Tunisia: extension of the focus to the center of the country].

Three clinico-epidemiological forms of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) were described in Tunisia: the zoonotic CL (ZCL) epidemic which occurred in the centre of the country caused by Leishmania major MON-25, the chronic CL (CCL) In the south-east of the country caused by Leishmania killicki MON-8 and the sporadic CL In the North (SCL) caused by Leishmania infantum MON-24. The latter form, described in 1991, prevails in northern Tunisia with approximately thirty cases per year. Its vector, unknown for a long time could be according to the last publications, Phlebotomus perfiliewi or Phlebotomus la…

Sand fly specificity of saliva-mediated protective immunity in Leishmania amazonensis-BALB/c mouse model.

Immune response of BALB/c mice to the salivary antigens of sand flies was found to vary with different species used, i.e. Phlebotomus papatasi, Phlebotomus sergenti and Lutzomyia longipalpis. Exposure of mice to bites of these sand flies elicits production of antibodies, which are largely specific to different saliva antigens previously identified as unique to the respective fly species. When immunized intradermally (i.d.) with salivary gland lysates (SGL) of L. longipalpis, BALB/c mice developed partial protective immunity against challenges in the contralateral ears with Leishmania amazonens…

Evidence that the vectorial competence of phlebotomine sand flies for different species of Leishmania is controlled by structural polymorphisms in the surface lipophosphoglycan.

Phlebotomine vectors can in some instances transmit only certain species of Leishmania. Comparison of a large number of vector/parasite pairs revealed that species-specific differences in vectorial competence were in every case directly correlated with the ability of promastigotes to attach to the sand-fly midgut, the variable outcomes of which were controlled by structural polymorphisms in the surface lipophosphoglycan (LPG) of the parasite. The ability of Phlebotomus papatasi to transmit only Leishmania major could be attributed to the unique, highly substituted nature of L. major LPG that p…

Sand Fly Fauna and Prevalence of Leishmania spp. in a Newly Investigated Area of Northern Italy: Emerging Epidemiological Scenarios?

Since the 1990s, cases of canine leishmaniasis (CanL) due to Leishmania infantum have risen in northern Italy due to dog translocation and movement as well as for climate-driven sand fly population growth. In this geographical region, for a long time regarded as non-endemic for CanL, L. infantum is generally transmitted by the sand flies of the genus Phlebotomus. Other sand flies, such as Sergentomyia minuta, have been less investigated, also because they were only considered as vectors of the nonpathogenic herpetophilic Leishmania tarentolae. Our study investigates sand fly species compositio…

Interactions between host biogenic amines and sand fly salivary yellow-related proteins.

BACKGROUND: During blood feeding, sand flies inoculate salivary proteins that interact with the host haemostatic system. The blocking of biogenic amines such as serotonin and histamine helps to limit vasodilatation and clot formation, and thus enables the insect to finish the blood-feeding process. In sand flies, an amine-binding ability is known only for the yellow-related proteins of Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia vectors, but not yet for members of the genus Sergentomyia. METHODS: The ability of Phlebotomus argentipes and Sergentomyia schwetzi recombinant yellow-related salivary proteins to bin…

MOSQUITOES (DIPTERA, PSYCHODIDAE, PHLEBOTOMINAE) IN THE CRIMEA: SPECIES COMPOSITION, SPREAD, ENVIRONMENTAL FEATURES.

Crimea was known to be a mosquito-borne fever (pappataci fever) endemic area in the past. There is information on sporadic cases of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), the vectors for which are also mosquitoes. This disease was registered in Crimea in both the 20h century and the early 21st century. The data available in the literature on the mosquitoes in Crimea, which were published mainly in the first half of the 20th century, have been analyzed. Based on the classification of these insects, which has been proposed by M.M. Artemyev, the authors have established that there are 8 mosquito species: P
