The effect of stimulus significance on relatively sustained (tonic-like) and relatively transient (phasic-like) aspects of electrodermal, heart rate, and eyeblink response.

To examine the influence of stimulus significance on more sustained as well as transient aspects of electrodermal, cardiac (HR), and eyeblink response, a 21-sec tone was sounded in one ear or the other. A click occurred during many tones, and a light followed offset by 9 sec. Four groups were studied: one pressed a pedal immediately on hearing any click; another only on click during tone in a specified ear; a third also responded only to the specified ear, but withheld press until the light; a fourth listened without any response. Results confirmed the important role of stimulus significance i

Stroboscopic light stimulation safety within and beyond laboratory settings: Observational evidence and practical guidance.

Stroboscopic light stimulation (SLS) reliably evokes geometric visual hallucinations and, in some contexts, altered-state experiences. Its increasing use in research, public, recreational and exploratory clinical settings creates a need for proportionate safety guidance. The main concern is a visually triggered seizure in a susceptible individual; reported non-epileptic responses include discomfort or distress. We combined a retrospective survey of safety practices and reported events across four laboratories, provider-reported operational data from two commercial SLS platforms, and a focused

Pupil Size Automatically Tracks and Predicts the Complexity of Visual Information.

Stimulus complexity is a fundamental constraint on the human visual system to summarize scenes into manageable representations. Although the pupil is known to reflect cognitive load, its role in processing visual complexity remains largely unexplored. In four experiments exploring orientation ensemble perception, we found that pupil size serves as a dynamic indicator of stimulus complexity, which was measured by entropy. Experiment 1 showed that pupillary constriction decreased (resulting in a larger pupil) as orientation distributions became more dispersed, a change that tracked increases in

The role of retinal flow in walking.

Both visual direction and optic flow have been implicated in walking toward a goal in experiments that use prisms to alter visual direction. However, prisms bias retinal flow patterns in ways that might affect the path chosen. We used a prism manipulation in virtual reality for goal-directed walking, where we manipulated the location of texture-defined flow as well as the direction of gaze. The addition of texture straightened paths, but primarily when it provided flow on the ground plane. Texture confined to the ground straightened paths similar to full-scene texture, whereas wall-only textur

Early-stage recovery after visual cortical damage for blindsight.

It is well known that humans and nonhuman primates can retain residual visuomotor abilities following chronic damage to the primary visual cortex (V1), a phenomenon known as blindsight. Sepe et al. investigated the behavior of monkeys with unilateral V1 lesions during a visually guided saccade task in the early post-lesion stage. Their study revealed that recovery initially manifests as atypical behavior, characterized by less accurate saccade trajectories and longer reaction times, while responses were nonetheless reliably triggered by the visual presentation of targets within the scotoma. The Syntax-Semantics Interface in a Child's Path: A Study of 3- to 11-Year-Olds' Elicited Production of Mandarin Recursive Relative Clauses.

The generative literature presents diverse viewpoints on the relationship between children's syntax acquisition and semantics acquisition. This study explored the issue by examining Mandarin-speaking children's production of recursive relative clauses under different semantic conditions. A 4 (syntactic types) × 2 (semantic conditions) × 10 (age) design was utilized. The syntactic types include: subject-gapped relative clauses within object-gapped relative clauses, object-gapped relative clauses within object-gapped relative clauses, object-gapped relative clauses within subject-gapped relative

Using simulation to disambiguate transducer and noise.

IMPORTANCE: Polygenic embryo screening (PES) is a novel technology that estimates the likelihood of developing future conditions (eg, diabetes or depression) and traits (eg, height or cognitive ability) in human embryos, with the goal of selecting which embryos to use. Given its commercial availability and concerns raised by researchers, clinicians, bioethicists, and professional organizations, it is essential to inform key stakeholders and relevant policymakers about the public's perspectives on this technology. OBJECTIVE: To survey US adults to examine general attitudes, interests, and conc

Surround motion modulates the encoding properties of primate retinal ganglion cells.

Antagonistic interactions between center and surround regions of the receptive field are widely observed across sensory systems. In the early visual system, these interactions contribute to important computations such as edge detection. However, less is known about how center-surround interactions depend on the spatiotemporal properties of the visual input. Here, we show that surround motion strongly modulates the response properties of two understudied primate ganglion cell types. Broad thorny cell responses are strongest when motion in the center and surround is uncorrelated, similar to obje

Subretinal Aspects of the Optoretinographic Response.

PURPOSE: Optoretinography (ORG) detects stimulus-evoked, nanometer-scale changes in the optical path length of photoreceptors, hypothesized to reflect osmotic water shifts into and out of the outer segments (OS), as well as electrostatic effects of opsin photoisomerization. The aim of this study was to measure parallel changes in the subretinal space (SRS), which may reflect changes in the SRS volume. The results of these experiments could affect interpretations of the photoreceptor ORG, which make testable hypotheses about the SRS volume. Moreover, because water movement in the outer retina i

Sensitivity suppression during attention shifts.

The brain possesses the remarkable ability to suppress undesirable signals generated by our own actions to ensure accurate perception, like the suppression of retinal motion signals during rapid eye movements, known as saccadic suppression. Attention, often referred to as the "mind's eye," undergoes rapid and frequent shifts, often occurring in the absence of explicit motor actions. Is visual processing similarly suppressed during attention shifts? In this study, we employed pupillometry and magnetoencephalography (MEG) to assess visual sensitivity across different attentional states. Our resu

Following Randolph Blake's furrow further.

In 1992, Randolph Blake, in collaboration with Robert Cormack and Eric Hiris, reported a strong deviation in perceived direction for a target moving over an oblique, static grating. Here we follow up on this effect, subsequently called the furrow illusion, to determine its origin. We find, unlike Cormack et al., that it is influenced by the luminance of the target and that it does not survive smooth pursuit of a moving fixation that stabilizes the target on the retina. We also introduce an inverted version of the furrow stimulus with the static grating visible only within the moving target rat

Insight into human photoreceptor function: Modeling optoretinographic responses to diverse stimuli.

Optoretinography is an emerging method for detecting and measuring functional responses from neurons in the living human retina. Its potential applications are compelling and broad, spanning clinical assessment of retinal disease, investigation of fundamental scientific questions, and rapid evaluation of experimental therapeutics for blinding retinal diseases. Progress in all these domains hinges on the development of robust methods for quantifying observed responses in relation to visible stimuli. In this work, we describe an optoretinographic imaging platform: full-field swept-source optical

A circuit model for transsaccadic space updating and mislocalization.

We perceive a stable, continuous world despite drastic changes of retinal images across saccades. However, while persistent objects in daily life appear stable across saccades, stimuli flashed around saccades can be grossly mislocalized. We address this puzzle with our recently proposed circuit model for perisaccadic receptive-field (RF) remapping in the lateral interparietal area (LIP) and frontal eye fields (FEF). The model uses center-excitation/surround-inhibition connections to store a relevant stimulus' retinal location in memory as a population activity. This activity profile is updated

Hierarchical motion perception as causal inference.

Motion can only be defined relative to a reference frame; yet it remains unclear which reference frame guides perception. A century of psychophysical studies has produced conflicting evidence: retinotopic, egocentric, world-centric, or even object-centric. We introduce a hierarchical Bayesian model mapping retinal velocities to perceived velocities. Our model mirrors the structure in the world, in which visual elements move within causally connected reference frames. Friction renders velocities in these reference frames mostly stationary, formalized by an additional delta component (at zero) i

Two-Dimensional Perisaccadic Visual Mislocalization in Rhesus Macaque Monkeys.

Perceptual localization of brief, high-contrast perisaccadic visual probes is grossly erroneous. While this phenomenon has been extensively studied in humans, more needs to be learned about its underlying neural mechanisms. This ideally requires running similar behavioral paradigms in animals. However, during neurophysiology, neurons encountered in the relevant sensory and sensory-motor brain areas for visual mislocalization can have arbitrary, noncardinal response field locations. This necessitates using mislocalization paradigms that can work with any saccade direction. Here, we first establ

Orientation fields predict human perception of 3D shape from shading.

How the brain recovers the three-dimensional structure of surfaces and objects from 2D retinal images remains mysterious. Shading patterns provide one of the most powerful-yet least understood-visual depth cues. Most theories assume the brain infers surface normals from luminance values. However, this seems unlikely as visual neurons are broadly insensitive to luminance. To identify alternative cues, we measured responses of model orientation-selective cell populations to images of shaded objects. We found a surprising statistical relationship between image orientations and surface curvature p

Nonlinear spatial integration allows the retina to detect the sign of defocus in natural scenes.

Eye growth is regulated by the visual input. Many studies suggest that the retina can detect whether a visual image is focused in front of or behind the back of the eye and modulate eye growth to bring it back to focus. How can the retina distinguish between these two types of defocus? Here, we simulated how eye optics transforms natural images and recorded how the isolated retina responds to different types of simulated defocus. We found that some ganglion cell types could distinguish between an image focused in front of or behind the retina by estimating spatial contrast. Aberrations in the

Melanopsin-mediated image statistics from natural and human-made environments.

Melanopsin-expressing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) play a critical role in regulating physiological and behavioral responses to light. However, little is known about how melanopsin and ipRGC signals are shaped by the statistical properties of real-world environments. Here, we analyzed the statistics of melanopsin, ipRGC codification of extrinsic and intrinsic photoresponses, and luminance using hyperspectral images of natural and human-made scenes under daylight illumination. The statistics were obtained by modeling human retinal receptive fields from current kn

Neural sensitivity to translational self- and object-motion velocities.

The ability to detect and assess world-relative object-motion is a critical computation performed by the visual system. This computation, however, is greatly complicated by the observer's movements, which generate a global pattern of motion on the observer's retina. How the visual system implements this computation is poorly understood. Since we are potentially able to detect a moving object if its motion differs in velocity (or direction) from the expected optic flow generated by our own motion, here we manipulated the relative motion velocity between the observer and the object within a stat

A new role for excitation in the retinal direction-selective circuit.

A key feature of the receptive field of neurons in the visual system is their centre-surround antagonism, whereby the centre and the surround exhibit responses of opposite polarity. This organization is thought to enhance visual acuity, but whether and how such antagonism plays a role in more complex processing remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the role of centre and surround receptive fields in retinal direction selectivity by exposing posterior-preferring On-Off direction-selective ganglion cells (pDSGCs) to adaptive light and recording their response to globally moving objects
