Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is widely used in dermatology to treat precancerous skin lesions and superficial non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs), including premalignant actinic keratosis, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in situ, and superficial basal cell carcinoma. The long-term cure rates of PDT range from 70 to 90% in NMSC patients, with excellent cosmetic results and good tolerance. However, the mechanism of action of PDT on tumors is complex. Folliculitis decalvans is a chronic form of deep folliculitis that occurs on the scalp as patches of scarring alopecia at the expanding margins of which are follicular pustules. Treatment of folliculitis decalvans is extremely difficult with a resultant poor prognosis. Photodynamic therapy has been reported to be effective in disorders as acne or folliculitis. We report one patient with folliculitis decalvans who was successfully treated with photodynamic therapy.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been applied in the last years for the treatment of plaque mycosis fungoides (MF) with promising results. PDT is very useful in the management of patients with few plaques of MF unresponsive to other topical treatments or in patients with plaques in difficult to treat areas in which cosmetic outcome is important. PDT achieves similar results to other treatments and it is safe and well tolerated. Despite the simplicity of the technique optimal treatment parameters have not yet been defined. This article is a review of the literature of PDT and MF.

Twenty-seven patients with cutaneous and subcutaneous malignant neoplasms were treated with photodynamic therapy. Therapy was administered to 248 areas during a total of 72 separate treatment sessions after patients received a total of 45 injections of sensitizer. BACKGROUND: Interferon (IFN)-alpha is widely used in the treatment of mycosis fungoides (MF) and when used in combination with photochemotherapy (psoralen plus ultraviolet A, PUVA) both improved response and duration of complete remission have been reported.
