Identifiable universal fluorescent multiplex PCR equipped with capillary electrophoresis for genotyping of exons 1 to 5 in human red and green pigment genes.

Congenital red and green color blindness is the most X-linked recessive disorder in humans caused by deletions or gross structural rearrangements of the visual pigment gene array that lead to altered the functions of visual pigments in their retina differ from normal. The incidence is about 7-10% in male and close association of X-linked recessive disorders (such as: hemophilia A, hemophilia B, duchenne muscular dystrophy). However, the traditional genetic analysis methods are time-consuming and low-efficiencies. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to develop a rapid method for genotyping o

Evolution of the Picosecond Laser: A Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: Picosecond pulse duration lasers (PS) have altered the field of dermatology. PS were initially used in tattoo removal, to optimize efficacy and reduce side effects with nanosecond domain lasers. More recently, they have been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of pigmentary disorders, acne scarring, and photoaging. OBJECTIVE: In this article, we critically analyze the published data on the many uses of picosecond lasers in dermatology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of PubMed was conducted using the following search terms: "picosecond," "picosecond laser," "

A possible protective role of pigment proliferation against subretinal neovascularisation progression in idiopathic macular telangiectasia type II.

Idiopathic macular telangiectasia (MacTel II) is a degenerative disorder of the Müller cells, characterised by pigment proliferation and retinal degeneration. We present a case of an elderly woman with bilateral asymmetric loss of vision. Fundus examination in the right eye revealed profuse pigment proliferation at the macula and pigment plaques temporal to the macula in the left eye, with bilateral retinal greying and right-angled venules. Optical coherence tomography and optical coherence tomography angiography helped identify this condition as bilateral MacTel II with outer retinal neovascu

Vitiligo management update.

Vitiligo is an acquired skin disorder caused by the disappearance of pigment cells from the epidermis, and results in well defined white patches that are often symmetrically distributed. The lack of melanin pigment makes the lesional skin more sensitive to sunburn. Vitiligo can be cosmetically disfiguring and is a stigmatizing condition, leading to serious psychological problems in daily life. It occurs worldwide in about 1% of the population, mostly between the ages of 10-30 years, and as often in males as in females. The cause is unknown, but might involve genetic factors, autoimmunity, toxi

Drug-Induced Pigmentation: A Review.

Drug-induced pigmentation (DIP) is estimated to account for 20% of all cases of acquired hyperpigmentation. Over 50 agents have been implicated, including antibiotics, antimalarials, antiretrovirals, antipsychotics, prostaglandin analogs, heavy metals, and chemotherapeutic agents. The skin, mucosal surfaces, nails, and hair can all be affected, with the color, distribution, onset, and duration of pigmentation varying between offending agents. Both a thorough physical examination and medication history are necessary to determine the offending agent. In terms of mechanism, DIP occurs most freque

Bilateral Tarsal Conjunctival Pigmentation After Eight Months of Minocycline Therapy.

A 71-year-old female presented to the ophthalmology clinic with bilateral brown to black pigmentary cysts in the lower palpebral conjunctiva following eight months of 100 mg twice daily oral minocycline therapy for long- standing pyoderma gangrenosum. Minocycline-induced pigmentation has been reported in skin, nails, teeth, mucosa, thyroid, bones, and sclera. To our knowledge, since 1981, only eight cases of minocycline-induced conjunctival pigmentation have been reported, all of which occurred after longer usage and higher cumulative doses of minocycline. The diagnosis could be verified by co

[Is the pigmentation a characteristic sign for chronic venous insufficiency?].

In epidemiological studies pigmentations were declared a decisive criterium of stadium II of chronic venous insufficiency. It is discussed in this work if it is possible as the pigmentation is sometimes absent in advanced stages of chronic venous insufficiency. On the other hand it has got to be considered that there are many other possibilities of pigment building on the legs without chronic venous insufficiency. Pigmentation may be of actinic, endocrine, atrophic or especially of inflammatory origin. These pigmentations cannot be differentiated from those caused by chronic venous insufficien

Photoprotection for people with skin of colour: needs and strategies.

Skin of colour or pigmented skin has unique characteristics: it has a higher eumelanin-to-pheomelanin ratio, more mature melanosomes, an increased amount of melanin distributed in the upper layers of the epidermis, and more efficient DNA repair compared with lighter skin. However, individuals with skin of colour are at a significant risk of skin damage caused by ultraviolet radiation, including the development of photodermatoses and photoageing changes such as uneven skin tone, and are predisposed to pigmentary disorders. In fact, one of the most common conditions leading to dermatology consul

Patterned pigmentation in children.

The terms pigmentary mosaicism or patterned dyspigmentation describe a spectrum of clinical findings that range from localized areas of dyspigmentation with no systemic findings to widespread dyspigmentation with associated neurologic, musculoskeletal, and cardiac abnormalities, and other sequelae that can lead to early demise. Given this wide spectrum, these patients must be approached with caution, but with the understanding that most who have localized pigmentary anomalies, such as segmental pigmentary disorder (SegPD) seem to have no systemic manifestations. These patients can be approache

Lipoidal degeneration of the retinal pigment epithelium.

Vacuolation of the retinal pigment epithelium in the foveomacular region of aging rhesus monkey eyes was re-examined with the eyes initially fixed in osmium tetroxide to retain the alcohol-soluble lipid. All vacuoles were found to be completely occupied by lipid material. Similar cells were positive to oil red O. The vacuolation of the pigment epithelial cell is considered to be a form of lipoidal degeneration.

Congenital retino-pigment epithelial malformation: a clinicopathological case report.

An unusual unilateral fundus lesion in a 16-year-old boy is described consisting of hyperpigmentation and presumed hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium combined with malformation and thickening of the overlying sensory retina. Based on its clinical and histological characteristics, this lesion is considered to be a congenital retinal pigment epithelial malformation.
