This study addresses the challenge of automated high-throughput phenotyping of wheat spike characteristics using modern computer vision and deep learning methods. Accurate estimation of spikelet number is a key indicator of plant productivity, yet traditional manual counting approaches are labor-intensive, slow, and difficult to scale to large breeding datasets. To overcome these limitations, we propose a spikelet detection strategy based on simplified point annotations, where an expert marks only the centers of spikelets rather than drawing detailed segmentation masks or bounding boxes. The undertaking of distant hybridization holds paramount significance for the innovation of tea germplasm resources and the cultivation of superior, specialized tea varieties. However, challenges manifest during the process of tea plant distant hybridization breeding, with reproductive barriers impeding the successful acquisition of hybrid progeny; the precise stages at which these barriers occur remain unclear. In this study, utilizing Camellia sinensis cv. Jinxuan as the maternal parent, as well as C. gymnogyna Chang and C. sinensis cv. Yinghong No.9 as the paternal parents, interspecific di

Semi-dwarfism is an agronomically important trait in breeding for stable high yields and for resistance to damage by wind and rain (lodging resistance). Many QTLs and genes causing dwarf phenotype have been found in maize. However, because of the yield loss associated with these QTLs and genes, they have been difficult to use in breeding for dwarf stature in maize. Therefore, it is important to find the new dwarfing genes or materials without undesirable characters. The objectives of this study were: (1) to figure out the inheritance of semi-dwarfism in mutants; (2) mapping dwarfing gene or QT

Plant base editing enables targeted nucleotide substitutions and provides a powerful approach for functional genomics and crop improvement. The toolkit has expanded from canonical cytosine and adenine editors to dual-base, transversion, Cas12-based, and organelle-targeted systems, broadening the range of accessible mutations and genomic targets. These advances create new opportunities for generating useful alleles, modifying gene function, and enabling directed evolution. However, expanded base-editing capabilities do not necessarily ensure predictable outcomes or successful breeding applicati

The modern cultivated chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum × morifolium Ramat.) is a globally important ornamental plant, ranking as the second-largest cut flower after roses. Here, to unravel its complex origin and domestication history, we achieved 6 haplotypes of the elite hexaploidy cut chrysanthemum cultivar 'Jinba' (2n = 6x = 54). By constructing a genome-wide variant map across 147 core accessions, we classified current Chrysanthemum varieties into 4 wild and 4 cultivated groups. We observed extensive, intricate gene flow among these groups, demonstrating that wild germplasms from both China an

Global warming has increased the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events, threatening crop productivity and food security. Plant reproductive development is particularly vulnerable to high temperature, and even brief heat episodes can markedly reduce seed set. Heat stress disrupts multiple reproductive stages, including flowering, male and female gametophyte development, pollination, fertilization, and early seed development. Thus, reproductive thermotolerance requires coordinated regulation across developmental stages and tissue systems. In this review, we synthesize current knowledge

Drought stress is a major abiotic factor limiting cotton yield and quality. RING-type E3 ubiquitin ligases play central regulatory roles in plant stress responses; however, the functions and regulatory networks of this gene family in cotton drought response remain largely unclear. In this study, we characterized the RING-type E3 ubiquitin ligase gene GhRNG1L from upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and demonstrated its role in enhancing drought tolerance in cotton, and we successfully identified its upstream transcription factor GhDREB2B. Functional assays showed that overexpression of GhRNG

Downy mildew (DM) in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis, severely restricts cucumber growth and yield. This study compared transcriptomic responses to P. cubensis infection between the DM-resistant cucumber cultivar '115' and the DM-susceptible cultivar 'XTMC' at 48 and 72 h post-infection. Compared with the controls, infection induced 6667 and 6601 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in '115' and 'XTMC' leaves, respectively. Across both time points, 97 and 90 DEGs were commonly upregulated specifically in 'XTMC' and '115' leaves, respectively, following P. c

Populus deltoides "Shalinyang" (PdS) displays reduced tolerance to abiotic stresses. SINA (seven in absentia) proteins, a subtype of E3 ubiquitin ligases, play crucial roles in regulating plant growth and responses to abiotic stresses. However, the characteristics and potential functions of SINA proteins in PdS remain unclear. We identified 12 SINA genes via comprehensive bioinformatic characterization. Overexpression of PdSINA2D improved drought and saline-alkali tolerance in PdS, whereas gene silencing exacerbated plant sensitivity to these stresses. We also found that the abscisic acid (ABA

In brood-site pollination mutualisms (BSPMs), insect pollinators breed within the plants that they pollinate. Organisms involved in BSPMs show adaptations in life-history strategies and life cycles. BSPM plants are monoecious or dioecious, or have bisexual flowers; are monocot or dicot; and are angiosperms or gymnosperms. All plants are perennial, mostly iteroparous, while a few are semelparous. The highly specific pollinators are mostly small-sized wasps, micromoths, thrips, fungus gnats, flower weevils, beetles, and gall midges. Most BSPMs involve ovule/seed parasites, while larvae also cons

Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient for all organisms. Fe availability in the soil is usually much lower than that required for plant growth, and Fe deficiencies seriously restrict crop growth and yield. Calcium (Ca2+) is a second messenger in all eukaryotes; however, it remains largely unknown how Ca2+ regulates Fe deficiency. In this study, mutations in CPK21 and CPK23, which are two highly homologous calcium-dependent protein kinases, conferredimpaired growth and rootdevelopment under Fe-deficient conditions, whereas constitutively active CPK21 and CPK23 enhanced plant tolerance to Fe-d

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic non-essential heavy metal that severely impairs plant growth, compromises crop yield and quality, and threatens food safety and human health. Jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) are well-characterized endogenous phytohormones that serve as central regulators in modulating plant adaptive responses to Cd stress. This review comprehensively synthesizes current knowledge on the involvement of JA and SA in regulating Cd accumulation and tolerance in plants, including their Cd-induced biosynthetic dynamics and signaling transduction pathways, as well as their fu

The ratio of red to far-red light (R/FR) is well known to regulate plant photosynthesis and flowering. However, the molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying these coordinated responses in winter wheat remain largely unclear. In a controlled-environment growth chamber, we investigated flowering behavior, photosynthetic performance, genome-wide transcriptional responses, and breeding efficiency in winter wheat under four R/FR light treatments: 10:1, 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2. Compared with an R/FR ratio of 10:1, an R/FR ratio of 2:1 significantly enhanced breeding efficiency, enabling up to 4.7

Wheat production faces severe yield threats globally and regionally in India from rust diseases caused by Puccinia species. Genetic resistance breeding is the most sustainable approach to mitigate these losses, but traditional phenotypic selection is often constrained by environmental fluctuations and rapid pathogen evolution. Here we utilized marker-assisted backcross breeding (MABB) to introgress broad-spectrum yellow rust resistance genes, Yr10 and Yr15, from the donor genetic stock PBW703 into the elite, high-yielding wheat cultivar DBW88 to develop two high-yielding rust-resistant genotyp

BACKGROUND: Sugarcane is a crucial crop for both sugar and bioethanol production. The nobilization breeding and utilization of wild germplasm have significantly enhanced its productivity. However, the pollen sterility in Saccharum officinarum restricts its role to being a female parent in crosses with Saccharum spontaneum during nobilization breeding, resulting in a narrow genetic basis for modern sugarcane cultivars. Mitochondria, often referred to as the intracellular "energy factories", provide energy for plant life activities, and are also implicated in cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS).

Artemisinin, a natural compound from Artemisia annua, is highly effective in treating drug-resistant malaria. Because chemical synthesis of this natural terpenoid is not economically feasible, its only source remains as the native plant which produces only small quantities of it, resulting in a supply that is far short of demand. Extensive efforts have been invested in metabolic engineering for the biosynthesis of artemisinin precursors in microbes. However, the production of artemisinin itself has only been achieved in plants. Since, A. annua possesses only poorly developed genetic resources

Seed oil content, protein content, and yield are agronomically important, correlated traits that determine the economic value of soybean (Glycine max). However, improving seed quality and yield simultaneously is challenging because gains in one breeding target often compromise the other, and the genetic basis of this trade-off is poorly understood. Here, we performed a genome-wide association study of 429 diverse soybean accessions and identified Seed Oil and Protein 5 (SOP5), which encodes a kinesin protein, as a key locus associated with seed oil and protein content. Grapevine, as an important economic crop around the world, has generally poor disease resistance in planting. Vitis vinifera, in particular, show high susceptibility to grey mould (caused by Botrytis cinerea), which leads to a decline in yield and quality. Existing chemical control methods have limitations, including environmental and resistance issues, so breeding disease-resistant varieties is crucial for sustainable agriculture. In this study, we identified a nuclear membrane-localised R2R3-type MYB transcription factor named VlMYB149 whose expression was significantly upregulated following

Whiteflies pose a major threat to crops worldwide, primarily because they transmit begomoviruses with which they have evolved intricate mutualistic relationships. The mutualisms are known to exacerbate whitefly invasions and drive widespread plant virus pandemics. Yet, certain plant genotypes are able to resist both the whiteflies and the viruses and a good understanding of the underlying mechanisms could help to develop more resistant varieties. Here, we show that the viruliferous whitefly Bemisia tabaci induces an early and strong release of the sesquiterpene β-caryophyllene in cultivated to
