Set off by a sports movement, a subacute ischemia of the lower limb allowed the delayed discovery of a segmental stenosis of the popliteal artery in a young man. It involved a compression by fibro-cystic deterioration of the wall of the artery. Separation of the cyst from the diseased arterial wall was followed by the restoration of circulation by means of an internal saphenous vein graft.

Because of a palpable swelling, 57 popliteal fossae were examined echographically. In 24 cases, the echography revealed a probable Baker's cyst. This diagnosis was confirmed by arthrography or at operation in 21 of the 24 cases. Two of the three findings which did not correspond were due to over-interpretation of the echographic picture and can be avoided in future by giving particular intention to the sound intensity. The causes of the discrepancy in the third case are still undetermined. These results show that echography is suitable for the discovery and assessment of Baker's cysts and shou

A new method was devised for treating 29 patients with cystic lesions of the soft tissue (popliteal cysts, bursitis, and ganglia) by injecting a fibrin sealant into the cyst after the aspiration of the contents. During the followup period (mean, 2.2 years), cysts did not recur in 22 (76%) patients. Of the 7 patients with recurrences, 4 were treated again in the same manner and 3 of these cases have not recurred. Additionally, to investigate the healing process in cysts, fibrin sealant was injected into the space between the abdominal muscle and the peritoneum of rats. Specimens were obtained a…

Cystic adventitial disease is a rare condition resulting in arterial occlusive symptoms. The characteristic clinical and angiographic findings suggest the diagnosis cystic adventitial disease. The presented case shows, that sonography can demonstrate the adventitial cyst and the resulting stenosis and confirm the diagnosis.

Hydatid disease of skeletal muscle is a rare entity. Liver followed by lung are the most common sites of hydatid cyst. Incidence of unusual sites which include spleen, kidney, mesentry, ovary, brain, skeletal system is 7,8 %. Skeletal muscle has the lowest incidence of primary hydatid among the unusual sites. Here we report a young female with rare primary hydatid disease of left posterior thigh extending into popliteal fossa.

Adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery (ACDPA) is an unusual cause of a unilateral progressive intermittent claudication in young or middle-aged men. In the case described here, ultrasound (US) examination provided the preoperative diagnosis. The lesion was dealt with by simple evacuation of the cyst and excision of the wall. This simple treatment is all that is required in the majority of cases and provides good long-term results.

Ultrasonography of 8 cases of cystic mass in extremities (7 ganglions, 1 popliteal cyst) were reviewed and evaluated. The lesions were demonstrated as round, oval or flattened shaped masses with no echo signal. However, in most cases, there was no sign of posterior echo enhancement, which may be the effect of posterior bony structure. It seemed important to handle probe with adequate palpation, which enables examiner to get further anatomical information.

Six cases of lymphatic filling during knee arthrography have been recorded in literature, all of which have had advanced rheumatoid arthritis. We report a case of lymph vessel filling from a popliteal cyst in a young male nonrheumatoid patient. It is concluded that abnormal synovial-lymphatic connection in the knee joint may occur also in other forms of synovial pathology and such a finding does not indicate rheumatoid inflammation.

Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) is a rare cause of intermittent claudication and nonatherosclerotic conditions in middle-aged men without cardiovascular risk factors. The etiology of CAD is unclear; however, the direct communication between a cyst and a joint is presumed to be a cause. We herein report a case series of CAD of the popliteal artery (CADPA), in which patients were treated with surgical resection and vascular reconstruction. Although less invasive treatment modalities, including percutaneous cyst aspiration and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, have been the subject of recen

A Baker's cyst of the left knee joint induced foot drop insidiously in a male, Hindu, aged 25 years. On clinical suspicion, that this malady was caused by neuritic type of leprosy, he was administered antileprosy drugs for 6 months without any benefit. On exploration a globular cystic mass, containing gelatinous fluid, was seen to be pressing over the left lateral popliteal nerve. Following removal of this mass, which on histology confirmed to be a Baker's cyst, foot drop and associated motor power impairment disappeared. This case thus highlights the importance of an early exploration and his

Intermittent claudication is frequently associated with atherosclerotic disease, but differential diagnosis must be sought in patients with no traditional risk factors. Cystic adventitial disease, of unknown etiology, most frequently affects the popliteal artery, and occasionally presents as intermittent claudication. We report a case of this disease and the surgical treatment, and discuss some aspects related to etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of this condition.

Real time ultrasound (US) was used to examine 165 consecutive inpatients with clinically suspected deep vein thrombosis of lower limbs. In conclusion US is considered a valid alternative to contrast venography in the diagnosis of proximal vein thrombosis of lower limbs.

Venography is often requested to confirm the clinical suspicion of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with calf pain or swelling. Often, no clots could be demonstrated and the patients are discharged without a confirmed diagnosis. It is now being increasingly recognised that a Baker's (popliteal) cyst, ruptured or otherwise, may simulate deep vein thrombosis. Seven patients with a clinical suspicion of DVT were referred for venography but were found to have no thrombi within the deep veins of the calf. These patients were noted to have knee joint abnormalities. Baker's cysts were confirmed

Cystic adventitial degeneration (CAD) of the arteries is an uncommon cause of intermittent claudication in adults. The majority of reported cases have involved the popliteal artery and have occurred predominantly in men, and all had clinical evidence of occlusive vascular disease. An unusual example of CAD of the common femoral artery masqueraded clinically as an aneurysm, but the arteriogram was normal. It involved 5 cm of the artery and half its circumference, and was resected and replaced with a saphenous vein graft. The cyst contained clear mucoid fluid and a fibrous wall without a cyst li

Cystic echinococcosis, which is caused by the larval stages of Echinococcus granulosus, results from the presence of one or more massive cysts or hydatids, and can involve any organ, including the liver, lungs, heart, brain, kidneys, and long bones. Muscle hydatidosis is usually secondary in nature, resulting from spread of larval tissue from a primary site after spontaneous or trauma-induced cyst rupture or after release of viable parasite material during invasive treatment procedures. Primary muscle hydatidosis is extremely uncommon, because implantation at this site would require passage th

This case illustrates the importance of expanding the differential diagnosis beyond ruling out a DVT in a patient presenting with calf swelling. A good history and examination and a compulsive search for an etiology are necessary in the pursuit of the correct diagnosis. In this patient, only after identifying the popliteal cyst and recognizing that it represented an inflammatory synovitis could the cause be determined and the proper treatment instituted.
