From Clinical Perception to Implicit Bias: Understanding Personality Traits in Lymphoma Patients.

Background/Objectives: Some haematologists share the perception that patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) behave and manifest emotional expressions in a characteristic way. Previous research suggested a unique personality profile in HL patients compared to the general population. This study aimed to analyse and compare the personality traits of HL and NHL patients to identify potential differences. Methods: In this cross-sectional, descriptive, multicentre and replicative study, we included patients with HL and NHL from the Spanish Group of Lymphoma (GELTAMO). Personality traits and other psy

Use of Disease-modifying Antirheumatic Drugs for Inflammatory Arthritis in US Veterans: Effect of Specialty Care and Geographic Distance.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of access to and distance from rheumatology care on the use of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARD) in US veterans with inflammatory arthritis (IA). METHODS: Provider encounters and DMARD dispensations for IA (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis) were evaluated in national Veterans Affairs (VA) datasets between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2015. RESULTS: Among 12,589 veterans with IA, 23.5% saw a rheumatology provider. In the general IA population, 25.3% and 13.6% of veterans were exposed to a synthetic DMARD (

Contemporary Status and Frontiers of Cervical Cancer Screening in the United States.

Cervical cancer screening and its implementation have evolved tremendously since the first method, cytology using the Papanicolaou stain, was introduced in the 1950s. New screening methods, such as human papillomavirus testing, have been discovered, and evidence-based changes have been made to official screening guidelines set forth by various US organizations. With the advent of a human papillomavirus vaccine in 2006 and with more recent research into populations carrying disparate burdens of cervical disease, the effectiveness of current cervical cancer screening programs is being called int

Spina bifida care, education, and research: A multidisciplinary community in a global context.

Worldwide neural tube defects, such as encephalocele and spina bifida (SB), remain a substantial cause of the global burden of disease; and in the US, Latinos consistently have a higher birth prevalence of SB compared with other ethnic groups. From limited access and fragmented care, to scarcely available adult services, many are the challenges that besiege those living with SB. Thus, to provide inclusion and active involvement of parents of children and adults with SB from all communities, innovative approaches will be required, such as community-based participatory research and culturally co

Profile of GERD in the adult population of a northeast urban community.

STUDY: An observational, cross-sectional, epidemiology study of the characteristics of GERD in a large northeast urban population was performed using a self-responding 84-question survey. Four-hundred and ten surveys were completed from a population sample with demographics comparable to those of the 1990 US Census data. RESULTS: No differences in heartburn frequency (monthly) were found between white or black, male or female respondents. Heartburn was significantly (P = 0.01) less common in those over age 60 (36.9%) than in young (47.7%) or middle-age (57.3%) respondents. Impact of heartburn

Epigenomics in Understanding Racial Disparities of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADRD) are neurodegenerative conditions that cause gradual deterioration of cognition, memory and language in the elderly. AD has been declared as a health priority by the World Health Organization (WHO) considering its severity and unavailability of a permanent cure. Although the global AD/ADRD population is made up of many ethno-racial groups, the majority of AD studies have focused on the Caucasian population. The few AD studies conducted on minority populations in the US have found that significant AD health disparities exist, demonstrating th

Striking Surge in Lung Cancer Incidence in Children of Early Life.

Lung cancer ranks first in mortality and the third in total cancer cases diagnosed in the US. The epidemiological trends may vary among different age groups, while the dynamics of risk factors evolve as well. We aim to carefully characterize trends of lung cancer among different age groups in the past two decades, by accessing the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) datasets from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and to delineate possible root causes. The SEER datasets were obtained from NCI. Data on environmental risk factors were acquired from the Environmental Protection A

Modelling donor factors influencing pancreas transplant utilization and evolution of decision-making over time.

BACKGROUND: Pancreas transplantation remains the only definitive treatment for diabetes mellitus. However, the global number of pancreas transplants and utilisation of pancreas grafts is declining. We aimed to identify significant donor factors associated with pancreas non-use. METHODS: Population-cohort study using United States (US) data from the Organ Procurement and Transplant Network (OPTN) registry (2010-2024). Multivariable regression models were constructed to assess associations between donor characteristics and pancreas utilisation. Restricted cubic splines were used to preserve non

Intussusception Rates Before and After the Introduction of Rotavirus Vaccine.

BACKGROUND: Recent US studies have identified a small increased risk of intussusception after rotavirus vaccination, mainly after the first dose. We examined trends in intussusception hospitalizations before (2000-2005) and after (2007-2013) rotavirus vaccine introduction to assess whether this observed temporal risk translates into more hospitalized cases at the population level. METHODS: Intussusception hospitalizations in children <12 months of age were abstracted from the State Inpatient Database maintained by the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project for 26 states that provided data fr

Role of Age in the Spread of Influenza, 2011-2019: Data From the US Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness Network.

Intraseason timing of influenza infection among persons of different ages could reflect relative contributions to propagation of seasonal epidemics and has not been examined among ambulatory patients. Using data from the US Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness Network, we calculated risk ratios derived from comparing weekly numbers of influenza cases prepeak with those postpeak during the 2010-2011 through 2018-2019 influenza seasons. We sought to determine age-specific differences during the ascent versus descent of an influenza season by influenza virus type and subtype. We estimated 95% credible

Microorganisms as Shapers of Human Civilization, from Pandemics to Even Our Genomes: Villains or Friends? A Historical Approach.

Universal history is characterized by continuous evolution, in which civilizations are born and die. This evolution is associated with multiple factors, among which the role of microorganisms is often overlooked. Viruses and bacteria have written or decisively contributed to terrible episodes of history, such as the Black Death in 14th century Europe, the annihilation of pre-Columbian American civilizations, and pandemics such as the 1918 Spanish flu or the current COVID-19 pandemic caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Nevertheless, it is clear that we could not live in a world without these

Fatalities from venomous and nonvenomous animals in the United States (1999-2007).

OBJECTIVE: To review recent (1999-2007) US mortality data from deaths caused by nonvenomous and venomous animals and compare recent data with historic data. METHODS: The CDC WONDER Database was queried to return all animal-related fatalities between 1999 and 2007. Rates for animal-related fatalities were calculated using the estimated 2003 US population. Inclusion criteria included all mortalities that were a consequence of bite, contact, attack, or envenomation (ICD-10 codes W53-W59 and X20-X29). RESULTS: There were 1802 animal-related fatalities with the majority coming from nonvenomous an
