Longitudinal Analysis of Tobacco Use and Oral Health in Adolescents: Findings From the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study.

PURPOSE: Adolescence is a critical period for shaping oral health. While cigarette smoking is a known oral health risk, the rise of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and the dual use of both e-cigarettes and combustible tobacco products (CTP) among adolescents presents emerging concerns. This study examines the longitudinal association of tobacco use, including e-cigarettes, CTP, and dual use, with oral health outcomes among a nationally representative sample of adolescents in the United States. METHODS: Data from waves 1-6 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health longitudinal st

Development of the Social Housing of Ontario (SHO) Registry by health region: a platform for health research with the social housing population.

INTRODUCTION: Social housing plays a critical role in addressing housing inequality and promoting well-being. This paper examines the creation of a registry of social housing sites across all six Ontario Health (OH) regions. METHODS: For all 47 housing service providers in Ontario, social housing address, provider type, and building type were extracted from their website or from documents provided by the housing organization. The Registry included rent-geared-to-income housing with unique or minimally shared postal codes. Descriptive statistics were analyzed for the housing site characteristi

Health Care Models for Persons with Multiple Chronic Conditions from Populations that Experience Health Disparities: A Scoping Review.

Almost half of U.S. adults have multiple chronic conditions (MCC), and the prevalence of MCC has significantly increased for racial and/or ethnic minority groups, especially among those aged 45-64 years. Yet, little is known about evidence-based health care models for managing MCC in these populations. The overall objective of this scoping review was to identify the breadth of literature testing health care delivery models or components of models to improve the management of MCC for populations that experience health disparities. The databases of CINAHL Plus, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus were se

Association of Vaping and Respiratory Health among Youth in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study Wave 3.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association of electronic nicotine product (ENP) use and its respiratory manifestations in a nationally representative sample of adolescents in the US. Cross-sectional evidence from 9750 adolescents in wave 3 (October 2015-October 2016) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) survey was used. Adjusting for demographics, lifetime number of cigarettes and cigars used, home rules about tobacco use, and tobacco used by other household members, we used logistic regression models to examine associations between ENP use and its respirator

Social inequalities in health and mental health in France. The results of a 2010 population-based survey in Paris Metropolitan Area.

The present study aimed to assess socioeconomic inequalities in general and mental health, depression and substance use disorders (daily tobacco use, hazardous alcohol use). Data from the 2010 SIRS (French acronym for Health, Inequalities, and Social Ruptures) study, which is deemed to be representative of the French-speaking adult population living in the Paris Metropolitan Area, were analysed. Different socioeconomic position indicators were selected: education, income and perceived financial status. Absolute measures (the slope index of inequality (SII)) and relative measures (the odds rati

Aspirin use and knowledge in the community: a population- and health facility based survey for measuring local health system performance.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the relationship between cardiovascular risk, disease and actual use of aspirin in the community. METHODS: The Measuring Disparities in Chronic Conditions (MDCC) study is a community and health facility-based survey designed to track disparities in the delivery of health interventions for common chronic diseases. MDCC includes a survey instrument designed to collect detailed information about aspirin use. In King County, WA between 2011 and 2012, we surveyed 4633 white, African American, or Hispanic adults (45% home address-based sample, 55% health facility s

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the health-seeking behaviour of an Asian population with acute respiratory infections in a densely populated community.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic led to the implementation of various non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI) as the Singapore government escalated containment efforts from DORSCON Orange to Circuit Breaker. NPI include mandatory mask wearing, hand hygiene, social distancing, and closure of schools and workplaces. Considering the similar mode of transmission of COVID-19 and other pathogens related to acute respiratory infections (ARI), the effects of NPI could possibly lead to decreased ARI attendances in the community. This study aims to determine the year-on-year and weekly changes of ARI at

A Standardized Statistical Framework for Population Surveillance Using the National Health Interview Survey.

National health surveillance systems in the United States collect essential information about population health, yet differences in analytical methods often make it difficult to compare results across studies. This paper presents a clear and consistent framework for descriptive analyses using the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). The framework establishes shared definitions for sociodemographic and clinical variables, outlines methods for handling missing data, and describes use of survey weights and multivariable models. This process will generate reproducible and interpretable estimat…

Association of Postoperative Complication with Subsequent Mental Health Disorders: A Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative complication is associated with lower health-related quality of life, but its association with subsequent mental health disorders is less well understood. We examined whether 30-day postoperative complication was associated with new or worsening mental health disorders. STUDY DESIGN: This population-based retrospective study included adults ≥18 years of age undergoing 1 of 25 common operations in Ontario, Canada, from January 2007 through December 2019. The primary outcome was new or worsening mental health disorders within 1 year, stratified by 30-day postoperative

Apolipoprotein E4 and its later-life health effects on the multiple sclerosis population.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease causing neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. The apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) allele, a major genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's Disease, accelerates cognitive decline and neuroinflammatory processes, including blood-brain-barrier disruption. This study explores the impact of APOE4 on later-life health in MS patients using biomarkers from the UK Biobank. METHODS: MS patients were grouped by APOE4 carrier status: MS-E4 and MS-nonE4. Age- and sex-matched non-MS controls (control-E4, control-nonE4) we

Health-Related Internet Use and Cyberchondria in Adolescents: Population-Based Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Health-related internet searches are widespread among the general population. Cyberchondria, that is, excessive health-related internet research that leads to emotional stress, showed significant associations with personality traits and psychological symptoms in adult samples. Although adolescents exhibit high levels of internet use, strong interest in health topics, and heightened vulnerability to anxiety symptoms and anxiety disorders, little research has examined cyberchondria in this age group. OBJECTIVE: Based on findings from adult populations, this study is among the first

Exertional inspiratory capacity and operating lung volumes in health: a population-based study.

RATIONALE: Inspiratory capacity (IC) should increase during exercise to allow unrestrained tidal volume expansion, mitigating uncomfortable respiratory sensations. However, preliminary evidence suggests that this is not universally seen in healthy individuals. Whether this negatively impacts on inspiratory reserves and dyspnoea remains unclear. To gain novel insights on the regulation of operating lung volumes in community-dwelling individuals, we determined the association of a lack of increase in IC during incremental cardiopulmonary exercise testing (dynamic inspiratory capacity (ICdyn)) wi
