Passive cigarette smoke induces reversible tracheal hyperreactivity via oxidative stress and m₃ receptor desensitization in rats.

Passive (second-hand) exposure to cigarette smoke contributes to airway dysfunction through oxidative stress, inflammation, and smooth muscl … mounted in an organ bath, and exposed to cumulative concentrations of phenylephrine, acetylcholine, potassium chloride, and calcium chloride. Contractile responses were also evaluated after pre-incubation with pharmacological modulators like atropine, salbutamol, nicorandil, acetovanillone, and L-NAME. Oxidative stress parameters, including malondialdehyde, superoxi …

A case of successful resuscitation from hypokalemic cardiac arrest using rapid intravenous potassium.

A 31-year-old male with no prior comorbidities presented with rapid-onset quadriparesis following one week of non-bloody diarrhea. Initial evaluation revealed severe hypokalemia (1.41 mmol/L) and an electrocardiogram (ECG) demonstrating signs of cardiotoxicity (irregular rhythm, diffuse ST depression, prominent U waves, and prolonged QT interval). The patient subsequently experienced cardiac arrest due to polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT). VT was refractory to an initial 200 J DC shock but terminated following the rapid intravenous administration of a 40 mEq potassium chloride (KCl) bol…

Acute quadriplegia in a 34-year-old man.

A 34-year-old man of Native American descent had flaccid paralysis of the extremities 2 days after a camping trip. He had no respiratory difficulty, sensory deficit, or abnormal reflexes. He was subsequently found to have a serum potassium level of 1.6 mEq/L, a thyrotropin level of <0.06 microIU/L, and a free thyroxin level of 5.30 ng/dL. Thyroid uptake and scan were consistent with those of Graves' disease. Symptoms rapidly resolved with potassium chloride, propranolol, prednisone, and antithyroid therapy. No further episodes occurred.

Metabolism of barium in the human body after suicidal ingestion: A CARE-compliant case report.

RATIONALE: Thus far, barium poisoning has been seldom reported and the metabolism of barium in human body has not been explored. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 21-year-old young man was taken to the local hospital by "120 emergency medical services" after a suicidal attempt. About 100 mL of barium chloride solution with a concentration of 100 g/L was ingested, while the actual amount of ingested barium chloride solution was unclear because of immediate vomiting after the ingestion. DIAGNOSES: About 2 hours after the suicidal ingestion, the patient was presented with somnolence, the pulse rate was 67 be

[Further research on the role of prostanoids in controlling renal function in humans in normal potassium balance and acute experimental potassium depletion. III: Effects of indomethacin in potassium depletion].

The renal function was evaluated by clearance (cl.) method during hypotonic polyuria and successive relative antidiuresis induced by lysine-8-vasopressin administration. Four 15 min and two 60 min cl. periods were performed in hypotonic polyuria and antidiuresis, respectively. Glomerular filtration rate was estimated by creatinine cl., the osmotic cl. (Cosm' CH2O), the absolute and fractional excretions of water, sodium, potassium and chloride were determined by usual methods. The urinary PGE2, 6-keto-PGF1 alpha and TxB2 excretions were determined by RIA method. The study protocol was applied

Correction of hypokalemia by magnesium repletion in familial hypokalemic alkalosis with tubulopathy.

The effect of magnesium treatment on serum potassium and potassium balance was examined in three siblings with a recently described syndrome of hypokalemic alkalosis with renal tubulopathy. Oral magnesium supplementation for 11 days in the three siblings increased mean serum potassium from 2.7 +/- 0.1 meq/liter to 3.3 +/- 0.2 meq/liter (p less than 0.05). In addition, urinary and fecal potassium excretion decreased by about 11 meq/day. Magnesium chloride did not affect plasma renin activity while the patients were supine or upright. In contrast, mean supine plasma aldosterone concentration inc

Biochemical features of dietary chloride deficiency syndrome: a comparative study of 30 cases.

The diagnosis in one infant of a severe state of chloride deficiency after ingesting a diet consisting exclusively of a modified cow milk formula containing only 0.5 mEq/100 kcal chloride ion led to the identification of 30 additional infants (age 2.6 +/- 0.7 months) fed the same commercial formula. The total absence of chloride in the urine was used as a biochemical index of subclinical dietary chloride deficiency. Serum and urine values were studied at diagnosis and 10 to 12 days after chloride replenishment, and compared statistically with the values obtained in a control group of 40 infant

Non-Selective PDE4 Inhibition Induces a Rapid and Transient Decrease of Serum Potassium in Mice.

The analysis of blood samples from mice treated with the PDE4 inhibitor Roflumilast revealed an unexpected reduction in serum potassium levels, while sodium and chloride levels were unaffected. Treatment with several structurally distinct PAN-PDE4 inhibitors, including Roflumilast, Rolipram, RS25344, and YM976 dose-dependently reduced serum potassium levels, indicating the effect is a class-characteristic property. PDE4 inhibition also induces hypothermia and hypokinesia in mice. However, while general anesthesia abrogates these effects of PDE4 inhibitors, potassium levels decrease to similar

Spinal glial remodeling: a critical driver of inhibitory circuit deterioration and central sensitization in inflammatory pain.

Peripheral inflammation triggers maladaptive remodeling of spinal inhibitory circuits, which sustains persistent pain hypersensitivity long after initial tissue injury resolves. Although glial activation is well recognized as a key driver of inflammatory pain, the sequential glial-mediated mechanisms that disrupt dorsal horn inhibitory synaptic function remain incompletely summarized. This review examines how sequential microglial and astrocyte activation dismantles inhibitory synaptic control in the dorsal horn during inflammatory pain. Activated microglia release interleukin-1 alpha, tumor n

Thiazide-induced hyponatraemia: distinguishing hypovolaemic and euvolaemic subtypes to guide management strategies.

Hyponatraemia is the most prevalent electrolyte imbalance observed in acute clinical settings, occurring in up to 30% of inpatients. Thiazide-induced hyponatraemia (TIH) is common, accounting for approximately one quarter of hyponatraemia cases among hospitalised patients. TIH presentations may occur with either a diuretic-induced volume depletion and subsequent hypovolaemic hyponatraemia or with a syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis (SIAD)-like presentation with euvolaemic hyponatraemia (which is more common). Hyponatraemia is associated with prolonged hospital length of stay and greater r

Acid-base changes caused by 5% albumin versus 6% hydroxyethyl starch solution in patients undergoing acute normovolemic hemodilution: a randomized prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) is an excellent model for evaluating the effects of different colloid solutions that are free of bicarbonate but have large chloride concentrations on acid-base equilibrium. METHODS: In 20 patients undergoing gynecologic surgery, ANH to a hematocrit of 22% was performed. Two groups of 10 patients each were randomly assigned to receive either 5% albumin or 6% hydroxyethyl starch solutions containing chloride concentrations of 150 and 154 mm, respectively, during ANH. Blood volume (double label measurement of plasma and red cell vol

Cardiac tamponade: an alternative procedure for late feticide.

OBJECTIVE: Improvements in equipment and diagnostic skills mean that more abnormalities can now be detected antenatally, thus increasing the demand for pregnancy termination at later stages of gestation. Potassium chloride injected into the fetal circulation is the most frequently used procedure. In this study, we propose a new method of feticide using injection of normal saline into the fetal pericardial space to induce cardiac tamponade, resulting in late fetal reduction with minimal maternal risk. CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old, gravida 6, woman was a carrier of a balanced translocation 45,XX,…

Improvement of growth hormone response to stimulation in primary aldosteronism with correction of potassium deficiency.

Potassium depletion frequently occurs in primary aldosteronism and has been implicated as the cause of the impaired carbohydrate tolerance frequently associated with this syndrome. Glucose, insulin, and growth hormone regulation were studied in a 42-yr-old, male patient with an aldosterone-secreting adenoma when the patient was potassium-depleted and again after potassium repletion. Potassium repletion was documented by serial body potassium measurements, with an increase in body potassium from 2400 mEq to 2850 mEq after 400 mg spironolactone and 80 mEq supplemental potassium chloride were adm…

Secondhand smoke inhibits both Cl- and K+ conductances in normal human bronchial epithelial cells.

Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure is an independent risk factor for asthma, rhinosinusitis, and more severe respiratory tract infections in children and adults. Impaired mucociliary clearance with subsequent mucus retention contributes to the pathophysiology of each of these diseases, suggesting that altered epithelial salt and water transport may play an etiological role. To test the hypothesis that SHS would alter epithelial ion transport, we designed a system for in vitro exposure of mature, well-differentiated human bronchial epithelial cells to SHS. We show that SHS exposure inhibits cAMP-s
