Precocious puberty in girls is defined by the appearance of secondary sex characteristics before the age of 8 years. Precocious puberty is either peripheral or central. In most cases, the cause of central precocious puberty is unknown. Rapidly progressive forms of central precocious puberty may benefit from puberty suppression to prevent compromised final height and psychosocial problems related to the physical changes. Idiopathic central precocious puberty in girls can be a challenging diagnosis. Clinical examination, evaluation of growth charts, bone age, and hormonal tests are part of the w

As part of an ongoing international multicentre study, 19 children (14 girls, 5 boys) with central precocious puberty (CPP) were treated with a slow-release gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, triptorelin, for 4 years. After 3 years of treatment, height velocity stabilized at 4.0 cm/year. Predicted adult height (mean +/- SD) increased from 158.9 +/- 6.8 to 164.9 +/- 6.6 cm in girls (n = 14, p less than 0.01), and from 174.4 +/- 18.5 to 184.3 +/- 17.1 cm in boys (n = 4, p less than 0.05). In 12 additional girls who had started the multicentre study but discontinued triptorelin treat

Nutritional status and body composition influence the development and maintenance of reproductive competence in mammals. It has been suggested that leptin concentrations communicate nutritional status to the neuroendocrine reproductive axis. To determine the interrelationship between circulating gonadotropin and leptin concentrations, leptin concentrations were measured in 39 children treated for GnRH dependent precocious or untimely puberty. Leptin concentrations were obtained during pubertal suppression with GnRH analogue therapy and during spontaneous pubertal gonadotropin secretion. The st

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of precocious puberty and elucidate the distinct characteristics of each type of perception related to precocious puberty among school-aged children who had undergone treatment for the condition.
METHODS: This study applied the Q methodology to identify and classify the perceptions of precocious puberty among school-aged children who had undergone treatment for the condition. The analysis involved 34 questions from the Q sample and data from 35 individuals in the P sample, using the PC-QUANL Program for analysis.
RESULTS: The perceptio

Up to now Chiari malformation has been reported only in four subjects with precocious puberty, with a prevalence among boys. This article describes the case of two female children affected by progressive precocious puberty detected through brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Brain imaging, even without neurological signs, can identify patients at risk of developing subsequently severe neurological symptoms. Our observation supports the usefulness of brain MRI both in males and females, even when no symptoms are present, to identify and detect high risk cases. However, there is no consensus

OBJECTIVE,: To investigate the genetic characteristics of idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP) and validate its polygenic risk for early puberty.
DESIGN AND METHODS: A bootstrap subsampling and genome-wide association study were performed on Taiwanese Han Chinese girls comprising 321 ICPP patients and 148 controls. Using previous GWAS data on pubertal timing, a replication study was performed. A validation group was also investigated for the weighted polygenic risk score (wPRS) of the risk of early puberty.
RESULTS: A total of 105 SNPs for the risk of ICPP were identified, of which 2

Osteocalcin is the non-collagenous protein produced by osteoblasts in bone. When it is released into systemic circulation in its uncarboxylated form, it regulates fat and glucose metabolism. Recent studies have shown that osteocalcin is also involved in male fertility. Because the onset of puberty is determined by ethnic, genetic, environmental, and metabolic factors, we focused on determining the role of osteocalcin in the onset of puberty. Central precocious puberty (CPP) is defined as the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis before the age of 8 in girls and 9 in boys. CPP i

Puberty is a major developmental stage. Damaging mutations, considered as "mistakes of nature", have contributed to the unraveling of the networks implicated in the normal initiation of puberty. Genes involved in the abnormal hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis development, in the normosmic idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (nIHH), in the X-linked or autosomal forms of Kallmann syndrome and in precocious puberty have been identified (GNRH1, GNRHR, KISS1, GPR54, FGFR1, FGF8, PROK2, PROKR2, TAC3, TACR3, KAL1, PROK2, PROKR2, CHD7, LEP, LEPR, PC1, DAX1, SF-1, HESX-1, LHX3, PROP-1). BACKGROUND: Genetic and environmental factors are implicated in many developmental processes. Recent evidence, however, has suggested that epigenetic changes may also influence the onset of puberty or the susceptibility to a wide range of diseases later in life. The present study aims to investigate changes in genomic DNA methylation profiles associated with pubertal onset analyzing human peripheral blood leukocytes from three different groups of subjects: 19 girls with central precocious puberty (CPP), 14 healthy prepubertal girls matched by age and 13 healthy pubertal girls matched by pubert

CONTEXT: Central precocious puberty (CPP) can have a familial form in approximately one-quarter of the children. The recognition of this inherited condition increased after the identification of autosomal dominant CPP with paternal transmission caused by mutations in the MKRN3 and DLK1 genes.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to characterize the inheritance and estimate the prevalence of familial CPP in a large multiethnic cohort; to compare clinical and hormonal features, as well as treatment response to GnRH analogs (GnRHa), in children with distinct modes of transmission; and to investigate the genetic

During the year 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic rapidly became a severe health emergency worldwide. In order to contrast the spread of the novel SARS-CoV-2, many countries implemented extraordinary restrictive measures, such as a strict lockdown and school closures. The pandemic had a great impact on children and adolescents' daily life, leading to a much more sedentary lifestyle, to larger use of electronic devices and to an increase in stress-related symptoms. These conspicuous changes acted as disruptors of children's normal development. Since the beginning of the pandemic, many studies reporte

PURPOSE: Central precocious puberty (CPP) is puberty that occurs at an unusually early age with several negative psychological outcomes. There is a paucity of data on the morphological characteristics of the brain in CPP. This study aimed to determine the structural differences in the brain of patients with CPP.
METHODS: We performed voxel- and surface-based morphometric analyses of 1.5 T T1-weighted brain images scanned from 15 girls with CPP and 13 age-matched non-CPP controls (NC). All patients with CPP were diagnosed by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation test. The magnetic

PROBLEM: This study aimed to determine the effects of a nursing support program (NSP) based on the Roy Adaptation Model on the psychosocial adaptation of girls with precocious puberty and their mothers.
METHODS: This study adopted a pre-post design. It included 26 girls diagnosed with precocious puberty and their mothers. Data were collected using a Demographic Information Form; the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 6-18; and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale. Participants were then enrolled in a NSP based on the Roy Adaptation Model. The same measures were administered at the end of

Dysgerminoma is a malignant ovarian germ cell tumor, and unlike sex-cord stromal tumors, endocrine manifestation is considered rare. Here, we report the first case of dysgerminoma presenting precocious puberty. The patient is a 7-year-old girl who presented with a breast development in Tanner stage 3. Serum estradiol (E2) was markedly elevated while luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were suppressed below the detection limit. Microscopically, the right ovarian mass displayed nests of large polygonal cells and fibrous septa which were focally concentrated by theca-l
