Social dynamics influencing cholera risk in the City of Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Cholera remains a major and increasing global public health problem for all people without adequate access to safe water. Goma, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been a major cholera hotspot in Africa since 1994 and is currently experiencing one of the largest outbreaks in the world. This article contributes to the existing scholarship on cholera risk by utilizing a variety of qualitative research methods. Goma offers several advantages to a study of cholera as a city on the shores of Kivu Lake, but where the majority of population does not have access to clean

Wellbeing in Essential Workers: The Role of Family-Related Risk and Coworker Support.

OBJECTIVE: Essential workers help maintain critical infrastructure in our society. This study examined the workplace characteristics associated with their health and wellbeing in a crisis, and tested the psychometrics of the Workplace Subjective Wellbeing scale. METHODS: Structural equation modeling using data from 211 public transit workers. FINDINGS: The ability to protect their families from workplace-related risks (eg, COVID-19 infection), and trust that coworkers will provide support, were more strongly associated with public transit workers' workplace wellbeing than having personal pro

When the science alone is not enough: embracing our responsibility as science communicators.

The US biomedical research enterprise has led the world in driving medicine forward but now faces unprecedented threats. Systematic efforts to defund and dismantle the academic research infrastructure, compounded by misinformation and questionable public support for science, have already impeded innovation and discouraged students from pursuing careers in research and healthcare, which ultimately will harm patients. This moment calls on us, as scientists and physicians, to effectively communicate the relevance of our research to the public and elected officials and ensure that the value of bas

Viral hepatitis in resource-limited countries and access to antiviral therapies: current and future challenges.

Chronic viral hepatitis is a major public health issue worldwide and mostly affects resource-limited countries. These regions combine a considerable set of barriers to containing the epidemic, including shortage of healthcare workers, poor medical infrastructures, insufficient screening and poor access to care and treatment. At a time when morbidity and mortality of chronic liver disease has been widely improved in wealthy countries by new innovative strategies and potent antiviral drugs, it is now urgent to face the challenges of better management of chronic hepatitis in resource-poor countri

Digital health as a scalable strategy for equitable myopia management in East Asia.

East Asia is facing a growing burden of myopia, with pronounced disparities in access to eye care between urban and rural populations. Digital health technologies present a scalable and cost-effective alternative to traditional myopia interventions that enhance early detection, risk stratification, behavioral modification, and public education. Artificial intelligence-assisted screening tools, wearable monitors, and mHealth initiatives, such as the World Health Organization-International Telecommunication Union MyopiaEd program, have demonstrated effectiveness in improving myopia prevention an

Digital technology in everyday life: emerging associations with social, mental, and physical health and wellbeing.

The digital determinants of health refer to digitally mediated factors that increasingly shape lifestyle, behaviour, and social connections. Digital devices, infrastructure, and services-ranging from mobile phones, social media and online games to emerging technologies such as generative artificial intelligence and robotics-have become integral to everyday life in many parts of the world. These technologies are reshaping the way individuals and communities experience social and mental health, facilitating new forms of connection, belonging, and participation. At the same time, these dimensions

Health-seeking amid conflict and climate stress: how climate disaster shapes maternal and child healthcare behavior in fragile and conflict-affected settings.

BACKGROUND: Floods can have significant adverse health consequences, placing an additional burden on healthcare systems and altering healthcare-seeking behavior. However, its effects on the health-wellbeing of vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women and children, in resource-constrained and conflict-affected Nigerian communities remain underexplored. This study examines the impact of the 2024 floods in Borno State, Nigeria, on maternal and child healthcare-seeking behavior. METHODS: A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed, with semi-structured Focus Group Discussions serving as

Implementation of integrated disease surveillance and response systems in West Africa: lessons learned and future directions.

The Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) framework, introduced by the WHO in 1998, aimed to unify disease surveillance across West Africa, replacing fragmented systems. However, challenges such as limited real-time reporting, inadequate data collection and workforce shortages continue to impede disease control and outbreak response. The resurgence of infectious diseases like Ebola, cholera, COVID-19 and monkeypox highlights the need to strengthen IDSR systems for effective public health management. This article reviews IDSR implementation in West Africa, identifying persistent g

Community Assessment of Hurricane Helene Recovery in Rural Western North Carolina.

Rural communities face unique challenges after a disaster as a result of overlapping vulnerabilities related to limited housing and transportation infrastructure, employment or income loss, and fewer emergency response and recovery resources. Hurricane Helene (Southeast Coast, USA; 2024) made landfall in Florida as a Category-4 hurricane, later impacting Western North Carolina with severe flooding, landslides, and hurricane-force winds. Communications and transportation were interrupted for months, leading to disinformation, recovery disruptions, and a loss of trust. To assess household impact

Field-deployable, quantitative, rapid identification of active Ebola virus infection in unprocessed blood.

The West African Ebola virus outbreak underlined the importance of delivering mass diagnostic capability outside the clinical or primary care setting in effectively containing public health emergencies caused by infectious disease. Yet, to date, there is no solution for reliably deploying at the point of need the gold standard diagnostic method, real time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), in a laboratory infrastructure-free manner. In this proof of principle work, we demonstrate direct performance of RT-qPCR on fresh blood using far-red fluorophores to res

Incorporation of HPV-DNA molecular test into the Brazilian healthcare system.

Cervical cancer is a major public health problem and is among the leading causes of female mortality in Brazil, especially in regions with less access to health services. In this context, in 2025 the country began the gradual implementation of the HPV-DNA molecular test in the Unified Health System, considered by the World Health Organization to be a more sensitive and effective primary screening method than conventional cytopathological examination. The objective of this study was to analyze the main political, logistical, and structural challenges involved in the national adoption of this te

Understanding HPV-Induced Cancers and Investigating the Barriers Faced by Low- and Middle-Income Countries in Prevention and Treatment.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a leading cause of several cancers, most notably cervical cancer, but also anal, penile, vulvar, vaginal, and oropharyngeal malignancies. While vaccines and screening technologies offer highly effective prevention, the global burden of HPV-induced cancers remains disproportionately high in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This literature review provides a comprehensive synthesis of the types, mechanisms, treatments, and prevention strategies associated with HPV-related cancers, while also highlighting regional disparities in healthcare access and infrastr

The Economic and Public Health Burden of Foodborne Illness in Somalia: Prevalence, Costs, and Policy Imperatives.

Foodborne illnesses exert a substantial toll on public health and economic systems globally, with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Somalia being disproportionately affected due to fragile health infrastructure, limited regulatory oversight, and high prevalence of informal food markets. This study assessed the prevalence and economic burden of foodborne diseases in Somalia by integrating regional epidemiological data and cost estimates to compensate for national data gaps. Cholera remains the most frequently reported illness, but evidence from sub-Saharan Africa suggests a broader

Public-health psychiatry in today's Europe: scope and limitations.

BACKGROUND: Public-health psychiatry is concerned, on the one hand, to ensure access to mental health services for all persons in need and, on the other hand, to advance knowledge of the social and environmental risk factors of mental disorders, and to establish a basis for preventive action. It is unclear how far current European Community (EC) policies will serve to achieve these objectives. This study aimed to review the mental health reform policies adopted in European countries since 1970, and to identify the main factors impeding progress in practice and research. METHOD: The relevant p

Attitudes as a Critical Mediator Between Schistosomiasis Knowledge and Practices Among Students, with Implications for Behavior Change Interventions - Pemba Island, Zanzibar, Tanzania, 2024.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Despite mass drug administration (MDA) programs in Zanzibar, schistosomiasis transmission persists due to behavioral gaps, and prior studies in sub-Saharan Africa consistently reveal significant knowledge-practice disparities where improved knowledge alone fails to translate into preventive behaviors. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: We quantified that attitudes are a pivotal mediator, accounting for 68.35% of knowledge's effect on schistosomiasis prevention practices among Zanzibari students. This finding, from a 2024 cross-sectional study on Pemba Isla
