Breast self-examination: attitudes and practices among young women in Europe.

Breast self examination (BSE) is recommended for the early detection of breast cancer in the European Code against Cancer. Evidence from North America suggests that there is reasonable public awareness of its importance, but compliance with regular BSE is reported by only a minority of young women. Attitudes to and practice of BSE has rarely been studied outside North America. In the present study, attitudes to BSE were evaluated by questionnaire in a sample of 16,486 students aged 17-30 from 20 European countries. Frequency of BSE practice was reported by the 9,181 women in the sample. Inform

Perspectives from the Canadian public health community on the use, adoption barriers to, and implementation supports needed for the Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada: Release 2.0.

The Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada: Release 2.0 come at a moment when the public health sector is grappling with uneven capacity, shifting expectations, and the need for clearer professional grounding. Reflections from national engagement sessions and a modified Delphi survey reveal that practitioners anticipate using the competencies to strengthen education and training, guide human resource practices, support public health advocacy, and inform organizational planning. These aspirations are tempered by concerns about the practical realities of implementation, including securing

Supplemental recommendations on adverse events following smallpox vaccine in the pre-event vaccination program: recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has issued recommendations previously for use of smallpox vaccine and supplemental recommendations for use of smallpox vaccine in the pre-event civilian vaccination program. On March 28, 2003, CDC reported cases of cardiac adverse events among persons vaccinated recently with smallpox vaccine. In response to these reports, ACIP held an emergency meeting on March 28 to make recommendations to CDC about medical screening of potential vaccinees and follow-up of persons with cardiovascular risk factors after vaccination. These recommendations

Overview of the symposium on public health significance of genomics and eco-genetics.

Genomic and genetic information is rapidly becoming a major element in public health research and emerging public health practice. This symposium reviews the methods, findings, and significance of genome-wide association studies from epidemiological and statistical points of view. We examine infectious and inflammatory components of gene-environment interaction in the respiratory system. We note the need for nutrient and dietary data and many other kinds of environmental exposure data in population-based genomic studies. Then we explore the sufficiency of a well-informed family history for pub…

Systems thinking in public health interventions: a systematic review of barriers and facilitators.

BACKGROUND: Systems thinking has been promoted to address complex public health challenges involving fragmented systems, multi-sectoral governance, and interacting social determinants of health. However, its application in real-world public health interventions and the conditions influencing implementation remain understudied. This systematic review examines how systems thinking has been operationalized in public health interventions, identifies key facilitators and barriers to implementation, and interprets these findings in relation to broader public health practice and ongoing health system…

Artificial Intelligence as a Core Public Health Competency: Proposal and Perspectives in Education and Research.

The continuous development of AI presents unprecedented opportunities for public health. This development prompts educators and researchers to consider how AI can be applied to and integrated into a rapidly evolving global landscape in which AI is reshaping health systems. In turn, this generates an urgent need for structured proposals that bridge theory and practice. In this viewpoint, we present perspectives and proposals on AI applications in public health. We operationalize AI literacy as a core public health competency, defined through knowledge, skills, and attitudes and scaled across pr

Manhattan transfer: lethal radiation, bone marrow transplantation, and the birth of stem cell biology, ca. 1942-1961.

This study investigates how, in the late 1940s and 1950s, fears of nuclear accidents and nuclear warfare shaped postwar radiobiology. The new and intense forms of radiation generated by nuclear reactor technology, and which would be released in the event of a nuclear war, created concerns about a public-health hazard unprecedented in form and scale. Fears of inadvertent exposure to acute and potentially lethal radiation launched a search for anti-radiation therapies, out of which emerged the new technique of bone marrow transplantation (BMT). This study analyzes the use of BMT first as a resea

Addiction concepts and international control.

Addiction concepts became established in the wake of the great expansion of the availability of psychoactive substances through the globalization of the age of European empires and the industrial revolution. Addiction was a way of understanding (and locating either in the substance or in individual deficiencies) the contradictions between ready availability and the demands for sobriety imposed by the new means of production and transportation. Originally applied to alcohol, addiction concepts were soon applied to other substances. The elusive place of addiction concepts in current internationa

Experiences of professional public health advocacy in the UK health and social care system: a qualitative survey study [using the Theoretical Domains Framework].

BACKGROUND: Advocacy of public health principles (PHP) is crucial to tackling health inequities. Advocacy skills are therefore a core competency of Public Health speciality training in the UK. A survey of UK-trained specialist registrars found that the perceived ability to advocate for PHP varied significantly across work settings. This study explores barriers and enablers to PHP advocacy across workplaces, offering insights into how advocacy can be better supported in the UK public health landscape. METHODS: An online survey was sent to UK-based public health specialty trainees, consultants,

Private Practitioners' Perspectives on Their Involvement With the Tuberculosis Control Programme in a Southern Indian State.

BACKGROUND: Public and private health sectors both play a crucial role in the health systems of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The tuberculosis (TB) control strategy in India encourages the public sector to actively partner with private practitioners (PPs) to improve the quality of front line service delivery. However, ensuring effective and sustainable involvement of PPs constitutes a major challenge. This paper reports the findings from an empirical study focusing on the perspectives and experiences of PPs towards their involvement in TB control programme in India. METHODS: The s
