Cerebral arterial time constant calculated from the middle and posterior cerebral arteries in healthy subjects.

The cerebral arterial blood volume changes (∆CaBV) during a single cardiac cycle can be estimated using transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) by assuming pulsatile blood inflow, constant, and pulsatile flow forward from large cerebral arteries to resistive arterioles [continuous flow forward (CFF) and pulsatile flow forward (PFF)]. In this way, two alternative methods of cerebral arterial compliance (Ca) estimation are possible. Recently, we proposed a TCD-derived index, named the time constant of the cerebral arterial bed (τ), which is a product of Ca and cerebrovascular resistance and i…

Blood flow and structure interactions in a stented abdominal aortic aneurysm model.

Since the introduction of endovascular techniques in the early 1990s for the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), the insertion of an endovascular graft (EVG) into the affected artery segment has been greatly successful for a certain group of AAA patients and is continuously evolving. However, although minimally invasive endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is very attractive, post-operative complications may occur. Typically, they are the result of excessive fluid-structure interaction dynamics, possibly leading to EVG migration. Considering a 3D stented AAA, a coupled fluid flow an

Hemodynamic consequences of pressure-flow curve gradient variations in continuous-flow ventricular assist devices.

BACKGROUND: Continuous-flow ventricular assist devices (VADs) have been widely adopted in clinical practice for the treatment of heart failure, but the effect of their non-pulsatile blood flow on microvascular circulation is still debated. Although VADs with a flatter H-Q curve are known to produce greater pulse pressure (PP), other hemodynamic performances have not been systematically compared and analyzed. METHODS: This study employed a lumped-parameter cardiopulmonary circulation numerical model to compare the hemodynamic responses of two continuous-flow centrifugal pumps: the Corheart 6 (

Fetal atrioventricular, venous, and arterial flow velocity waveforms in the small for gestational age fetus.

Arterial, venous, and intracardiac Doppler flow velocity waveforms were studied in 50 women with a small for gestational age (SGA) fetus according to a cross-sectional study design. No Doppler signals could be obtained in five women for technical reasons. The remaining 45 women were compared with normal control subjects matched for gestational age and maternal parity. The 45 SGA fetuses were divided into birth weight below the 5th centile for gestational age (group I, n = 35) and birth weight between the 5th and 10th centile for gestational age (group II, n = 10). A significant difference in b

Antenatal Doppler measurements and early brain injury in very low birth weight infants.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlation between fetoplacental blood flow and brain injury and volumes in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. STUDY DESIGN: Antenatal blood flow from the umbilical artery (UA), middle cerebral artery (MCA), and descending aorta was determined in 70 VLBW infants. The directions of the total diastolic flow of the aortic isthmus and the end-diastolic flow of ductus venosus also were measured. Serial brain ultrasound examinations and MRI at term were performed to assess brain abnormalities. On the basis of brain imaging findings, the newborn infants were classifie

Effects of single low-temperature sauna bathing in patients with severe motor and intellectual disabilities.

We have previously reported that thermal vasodilation following warm-water bathing and low-temperature sauna bathing (LTSB) at 60 degrees C for 15 min improves the cardiac function in patients with congestive heart failure. Through a comparative before-and-after study, we studied the hemodynamic and clinical effects of single exposure to LTSB in cerebral palsy (CP) patients who usually suffer from chilled extremities and low cardiac output. The study population comprised 16 patients ranging between 19 and 53 years with severe motor and intellectual disabilities. Noninvasive methods were used t

Cerebral Blood Flow Following Hybrid Stage I Palliation in Infants with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) palliation may result in altered cerebral blood flow with subsequent neurodevelopmental implications. The purpose of the study was to assess blood flow in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and investigate the relationship with early neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants with HLHS after hybrid stage I. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) was performed to obtain peak systolic, end-diastolic, and mean velocities, as well as pulsatility index of the MCA in infants with HLHS (n = 18) at baseline and at 2, 4, and 6 months of age. Developmental assessment was performed a

Circulating S100beta protein is increased in intrauterine growth-retarded fetuses.

To determine whether S100beta, an acidic calcium-binding protein previously demonstrated as a reliable indicator of a brain lesion, could be helpful in the detection of brain distress in intrauterine growth-retarded (IUGR) fetuses, we studied, by a case-control study, the correlation between S100B protein and the degree of fetoplacental blood flow impairment. Maternal and umbilical blood samples and placental tissue specimens were collected at delivery from IUGR pregnancies with normal (n = 10) or abnormal (n = 10) umbilical artery Doppler findings and from 40 uncomplicated pregnancies. Pulsatile tinnitus from a spontaneous carotid-jugular fistula: case report.

INTRODUCTION: We describe a patient who presented with unilateral objective pulsatile tinnitus (PT) from an unusual spontaneous fistula between the internal carotid artery (ICA) and the internal jugular vein (IJV). CASE REPORT: The 56-year-old woman presented with unilateral PT without antecedent trauma. A blowing bruit, synchronous with the pulse, was audible with stethoscopic examination of the right carotid, mastoid, and orbital regions. The duplex ultrasound showed high velocity flow over the right ICA. Right carotid angiography demonstrated a high-flow fistula between the ICA and the IJV

[Detection of reduced flow velocities in the anterior cerebral artery in premature and newborn infants and in older infants with cerebral hemorrhages using pulsed Doppler sonography].

34 infants with intracerebral haemorrhage (intraventricular haemorrhage 26; subdural haemorrhage 2; epidural haemorrhage 2; subarachnoidal haemorrhage 4) were investigated by pulsed Doppler-sonography. Absolute flow velocities were measured in the anterior cerebral arteries in infants with intracranial haemorrhage and compared with the flow velocities of a healthy control group of identical gestational age, actual age and weight. All flow velocities were significantly reduced in premature and full-term infants with intracranial haemorrhage, whereas the pulsatility-index was significantly incre

Cerebrovascular activity is a major factor in the cerebrospinal fluid flow dynamics.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) provides physical protection to the central nervous system as well as an essential homeostatic environment for the normal functioning of neurons. Additionally, it has been proposed that the pulsatile movement of CSF may assist in glymphatic clearance of brain metabolic waste products implicated in neurodegeneration. In awake humans, CSF flow dynamics are thought to be driven primarily by cerebral blood volume fluctuations resulting from a number of mechanisms, including a passive vascular response to blood pressure variations associated with cardiac and respiratory cy

Fluid structure interaction versus rigid-wall approach in the study of the symptomatic stenosed carotid artery: Importance of wall compliance and resilience of loose connective tissue.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of a compliant wall approach in modeling of non-Newtonian and non-physiological blood flows. A case study of a stenosed and symptomatic carotid bifurcation was considered to show the influence of the wall-resilience assumption on the flow parameters obtained with numerical simulations. Patient-specific data concerning the geometry and flow conditions were collected and used to carry out two-way coupled fluid structure interaction simulations of the pulsatile blood flow through carotid artery. The wall compliance was considered separate

Computational model of the fluid dynamics in systemic-to-pulmonary shunts.

A systemic-to-pulmonary shunt is a connection created between the systemic and pulmonary arterial circulations in order to improve pulmonary perfusion in children with congenital heart diseases. Knowledge of the relationship between pressure and flow in this new, surgically created, cardiovascular district may be helpful in the clinical management of these patients, whose survival is critically dependent on the blood flow distribution between the pulmonary and systemic circulations. In this study a group of three-dimensional computational models of the shunt have been investigated under steady

Ocular hemodynamic changes in patients with high-grade carotid occlusive disease and development of chronic ocular ischaemia. I. Doppler and dynamic tonometry findings.

Ophthalmic artery blood flow pattern and the pulsatile ocular blood volume changes in patients with hemodynamically significant carotid occlusive disease are described. Using transorbital Doppler ultrasonography and dynamic tonometry 45 patients with high-grade internal carotid artery stenosis or occlusion and 15 healthy controls were examined. The measurements were performed under baseline conditions and 30 min after 1 gi.v. acetazolamide administration. The velocity in the ophthalmic artery was significantly lower in patients compared with controls. Pulsatile ocular blood volume was also low

Evaluation of cerebral AVM's using transcranial Doppler ultrasound.

Blood flow velocities in basal cerebral arteries were recorded noninvasively in 28 patients with cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVM's) and were correlated with the angiographic findings. In normal arteries remote from the AVM, flow velocities ranged from 44 to 94 cm/sec (median 65 cm/sec) with pulsatility indexes from 0.65 to 1.10 (median 0.87). This is consistent with findings in normal individuals. Arteries feeding the AVM's were identified by the high flow velocities (ranging from 75 to 237 cm/sec, median 124 cm/sec). The pulsatility index ranged from 0.22 to 0.74 (median 0.48). The

Reduction of vertebral blood flow by segmental vessel occlusion: an intraoperative study using laser Doppler flowmetry.

STUDY DESIGN: During anterior spinal surgery, vertebral perfusion was assessed by laser Doppler flowmetry. Blood flow changes were assessed after unilateral ligation and contralateral compression of the segmental vessels. OBJECTIVE: To assess the influence of unilateral and bilateral segmental vessel occlusion on vertebral blood flow. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: During anterior spinal surgery, segmental vessels are frequently being ligated. The reduced blood supply to the vertebrae may impair intervertebral fusion, and the decreased spinal cord perfusion may lead to ischemic myelopathy. To o
