Single-Photon Interference over 8.4 km Urban Atmosphere: Toward Testing Quantum Effects in Curved Spacetime with Photons.

The emergence of quantum mechanics and general relativity has transformed our understanding of the natural world significantly. However, integrating these two theories presents immense challenges, and their interplay remains untested. Recent theoretical studies suggest that the single-photon interference covering huge space can effectively probe the interface between quantum mechanics and general relativity. We developed an alternative design using unbalanced Michelson interferometers to address this and validated its feasibility over an 8.4 km free-space channel. Using a high-brightness singl

Ring-polymer instanton theory for tunneling between asymmetric wells.

Instanton theory has arisen as a practical tool for calculating tunneling splittings in molecular systems. Unfortunately, the original formulation of instanton theory fundamentally breaks down when trying to calculate the level splitting in asymmetric double wells, as there is no imaginary-time periodic orbit connecting the two non-degenerate minima. We have, therefore, developed a new formulation of instanton theory based on a projected flux correlation function that is applicable to these asymmetric systems. Comparison with exact quantum-mechanical results in one- and two-dimensional models

A Computational Re-examination of the Criegee Intermediate-Sulfur Dioxide Reaction.

The atmospheric oxidation of sulfur dioxide by the parent and dimethyl Criegee intermediates (CIs) may be an important source of sulfuric acid aerosol, which has a large impact on radiative forcing and therefore upon climate. A number of computational studies have considered how the CH2OOS(O)O heteroozonide (HOZ) adduct formed in the CI + SO2 reaction converts SO2 to SO3. In this work we use the CBS-QB3 quantum chemical method along with equation-of-motion spin-flip CCSD(dT) and MCG3 theories to reveal new details regarding the formation and decomposition of the endo and exo conformers of the

Magnetization Plateaux as a Roadmap to Quantum Spin Liquids.

We investigate the spin-1/2 J_{1}-J_{2} triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field by combining large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations with self-consistent spin-wave theory. The resulting field-coupling phase diagram reveals that quantum fluctuations stabilize coplanar order across the entire parameter range, giving rise to a characteristic sequence of magnetization plateaux. Near the quantum-spin-liquid window 0.06≲J_{2}/J_{1}≲0.16, which extends to magnetic field B∼J_{1}, we identify overlapping m=1/3 and m=1/2 plateaux-a distinctive hallma

Experimental and theoretical study of a new carbazole derivative having terminal benzimidazole rings.

A novel intramolecular donor-acceptor compound has been synthesized and characterized. This compound was a symmetrical A-pi-D-pi-A type molecule containing two benzimidazole rings as two electron acceptors (A) and an N-ethylcarbazole group as electron donors (D). The absorption and emission spectra of the compound were determined by experimental methods in solution and were computed by using the density functional theory (DFT) and the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) in gas phase and in chloroform solution. The calculated absorption and emission wavelengths were in good agreeme

DFT and quantum mechanical investigation of polyethylene and polypropylene monomers.

The hydration reaction of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) monomers was investigated by density functional theory method (DFT) and quantum mechanical calculations (QM), using various types of approximations with and without van der Waals (vdW) corrections. The transition state optimization required for computing the activation energy was validated by infrared (IR) spectra of the products and showed agreement with Markovinkov's rule. Among all approximations tested, second order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) provided a more accurate description of the energy profile because t

Magnetic Response of Excitons and Excitonic Complexes in Defective Hexyl Ammonium Lead Iodide Self-Assembled Quantum Wells.

Correlating the magnetic behavior of low-dimensional semiconductors with the chemistry used to form these excitonic materials remains crucial to the development of devices applied to quantum technologies. In this study, we apply large magnetic fields during the collection of low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) to assess the magnetic properties of excitons in hexyl ammonium lead iodide (HA2PbI4) self-assembled quantum wells (SAQWs) formed at liquid-liquid interfaces. The effect of incident laser power and temperature was used to assign lower energy features in these samples' PL spectra to bo

Quantum Scars and Regular Eigenstates in a Chaotic Spinor Condensate.

Quantum many-body scars consist of a few low-entropy eigenstates in an otherwise chaotic many-body spectrum, and can weakly break ergodicity resulting in robust oscillatory dynamics. The notion of quantum many-body scars follows the original single-particle scars introduced within the context of quantum billiards, where scarring manifests in the form of a quantum eigenstate concentrating around an underlying classical unstable periodic orbit. A direct connection between these notions remains an outstanding problem. Here, we study a many-body spinor condensate that, owing to its collective inte

Laser-Controlled Implementation of Controlled-NOT, Hadamard, SWAP, and Pauli Gates as Well as Generation of Bell States in a 3d-4f Molecular Magnet.

Using high-level ab initio many-body theory, we theoretically propose that the Dy and the Ni atoms in the [Dy2Ni2(L)4(NO3)2(DMF)2] real molecular magnet as well as in its core, that is, the [Dy2Ni2O6] system, act as two-level qubit systems. Despite their spatial proximity we can individually control each qubit in this highly correlated real magnetic system through specially designed laser-pulse combinations. This allows us to prepare any desired two-qubit state and to build several classical and quantum logic gates, such as the two-qubit (binary) CNOT gate with three distinct laser pulses. Oth

The fluorescence regulation mechanism of the paramagnetic metal in a biological HNO sensor.

Paramagnetic metals are frequently used to regulate fluorescence emissions in chemical and biological probes. Accurate quantum calculations offer the first regulation theory that quenching is through the competitive nonradiative decay of the mixed fluorophore/metal (3)ππ*/dd state isoenergetic to the fluorophore-localized (1)ππ* state.

Manipulating the Spin Orientation of Co Atoms Using Monatomic Cu Chains.

Harnessing the spin of single atoms is at the heart of quantum information nanotechnology based on magnetic concepts. By attaching single Co atoms to monatomic Cu chains, we demonstrate the ability to control the spin orientation by the atomic environment. Due to spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the spin is tilted by ≈58° from the surface normal toward the chain as evidenced by inelastic tunneling spectroscopy. These findings are reproduced by density functional theory calculations and have implications for Co atoms on pristine Cu(111), which are believed to be Kondo systems. Our quantum Monte Carlo

Distinguishing Coherent and Incoherent Errors in Multiround Time-Reversed Dynamics via Scramblons.

Despite the rapid development of quantum science and technology, errors are inevitable and play a crucial role in quantum simulation and quantum computation. In quantum chaotic systems, coherent errors arising from imperfect Hamiltonian control and incoherent errors induced by coupling to the environment are both exponentially amplified during time evolution due to information scrambling. A fundamental question is how these two classes of errors imprint distinct signatures on the emergent irreversibility of many-body dynamics. In this Letter, we address this question by investigating multiroun

The Radical Scavenging Activity of Kinetin: Mechanisms, Kinetics, and the Effects of pH and Solvent Polarity.

Kinetin (N6-furfuryladenine, KNT) is a naturally occurring cytokinin that has been widely used as an active ingredient in anti-aging skin care products because of its antioxidant and cytoprotective properties; however, its direct radical scavenging activity, particularly toward hydroxyl (HO•) and hydroperoxyl (HOO•) radicals remains poorly understood. Herein, a combined experimental and quantum chemical investigation was performed to elucidate the radical scavenging activity of KNT. The calculated overall rate constant for the neutral KNT species, which predominates at pH 7, was 9.09 × 109 M-1

Quantum Imaging of Bone Tissue Using Entangled Two-Photon Microscopy.

Tracking the progression of the bone resorption process is important for clinical research and development of pharmaceuticals for bone-related diseases. Although fluorescence imaging is found to be one of the powerful tools for studying bone, conventional fluorescence microscopy relies on extremely high excitation powers that induce photobleaching and phototoxic effects on biological samples, preventing long-term observations. To overcome these limitations, we propose a quantum light-based approach using entangled two-photon fluorescence microscopy (ETPFM). We demonstrate ETPFM for imaging fix

Insights into Protein-Ligand Noncovalent Interaction Networks: A Database Survey and Quantum Chemistry Calculation Study.

Protein-ligand binding is largely determined by multiple noncovalent interactions (NCIs), which may exhibit synergistic or antagonistic effects. Here, we applied an approach combining PDB statistics with QM/MM calculations to quantify relationships among five major NCIs: halogen bonds (XB), hydrogen bonds (HB), cation-π interactions (CP), π-π interactions (PP), and salt bridges (SB). Statistical analysis showed that 69.28% of the ligands with SB acceptors interact with protein residues, followed by HB acceptors (65.21%) and XB donors (62.76%). Energy analysis revealed the strongest antagonism

The ABEEM/MM Calcium Polarizable Force Field: Parameterization and Applications in Aqueous Solutions and Protein Segments.

Reasonably describing the microscopic interaction mechanisms between calcium ions and water as well as ligand proteins is essential for elucidating the structures and functions of calcium proteins. However, capturing the strong polarization between calcium ligands remains a challenge for classical force fields. In this study, we present a fluctuating charge calcium force field for simulations on calcium proteins and aqueous calcium solutions based on Atom-Bond Electronegativity Equalization Method fused into Molecular Mechanics (ABEEM/MM). To reasonably simulate calcium-ligand interactions, mo

Mechanistic Investigation on the C-C Bond Cleavage of α-Hydroxy Ketone Catalyzed by Engineering P450 Monooxygenase Enzyme F182L-CYP199A4.

In addition to the typical oxygen insertion reaction, some cytochrome P450 also catalyze the C-C cleavage, and most P450 employs Cpd I to trigger lyase reactions. There is also evidence to support an alternative mechanism, in which a species earlier than the formation of Cpd I was suggested to perform the lyase reaction. To understand the detailed reaction mechanism, we performed quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) calculations to explore the cleavage mechanism of mutated CYP199A4 (F182L-CYP199A4). Our calculation results reveal that the peroxoanion (Fe(III)-O-O2-) rather than oxo-fe

CsPbBr3 Quantum Dot Modified In2O3 Nanofibers for Effective Detection of ppb-Level HCHO at Room Temperature under UV Illumination.

The design of high-performance and low-power formaldehyde (HCHO) gas sensors is of great interest to researchers for environmental monitoring and human health. Herein, In2O3/CsPbBr3 composites were successfully synthesized through an electrospinning and self-assembly approach, and their ultraviolet-activated (UV-activated) HCHO gas-sensing properties were investigated. The measurement data indicated that the In2O3/CsPbBr3 sensor possesses an excellent selectivity toward HCHO. The response of the In2O3/CsPbBr3 sensor to 2 ppm of HCHO was 31.4, which was almost 11 times larger than that of In2O3

Multiple linear regression models for predicting the n‑octanol/water partition coefficients in the SAMPL7 blind challenge.

A multiple linear regression model called MLR-3 is used for predicting the experimental n-octanol/water partition coefficient (log PN) of 22 N-sulfonamides proposed by the organizers of the SAMPL7 blind challenge. The MLR-3 method was trained with 82 molecules including drug-like sulfonamides and small organic molecules, which resembled the main functional groups present in the challenge dataset. Our model, submitted as "TFE-MLR", presented a root-mean-square error of 0.58 and mean absolute error of 0.41 in log P units, accomplishing the highest accuracy, among empirical methods and also in al

Cyclometalated AuIII Complexes for Cysteine Arylation in Zinc Finger Protein Domains: towards Controlled Reductive Elimination.

With the aim of exploiting the use of organometallic species for the efficient modification of proteins through C-atom transfer, the gold-mediated cysteine arylation through a reductive elimination process occurring from the reaction of cyclometalated AuIII C^N complexes with a zinc finger peptide (Cys2 His2 type) is here reported. Among the four selected AuIII cyclometalated compounds, the [Au(CCO N)Cl2 ] complex featuring the 2-benzoylpyridine (CCO N) scaffold was identified as the most prone to reductive elimination and Cys arylation in buffered aqueous solution (pH 7.4) at 37 °C by high-re
